The Army Is Looking for a Few Good Couch Potatoes
It took the military a few years too many to figure out that you don't have to be a Chuck Norris to serve your country. According to an article in the Florida Times-Union, the Army determined that being overweight would not interfere with the job of Cyber Warfare and is looking to adapt the rules to accept qualified geeks and nerds for the new Cyber Army.

Today, we need cyber warriors, so we're starting to recruit for Army Cyber. One of the things we're considering is that your [mission] as a cyber warrior is different. Maybe you're not the Ranger who can do 100 pushups, 100 sit-ups and run the 2-mile inside of 10 minutes, but you can crack a data system of an enemy.

Dell Takes One Last Shot at Selling Windows 7 Home Premium PCs
If you are one of the many stuck between a rock and a hard place in deciding whether to bite the bullet and go for Windows 8 or wait until Windows 10 debuts, Dell is out to give you a last chance at picking up a factory fresh PC running Windows 7 Home Premium.

In a banner that ran on its website over the weekend, Dell promoted Windows 7 systems with the tagline, "Windows 7 for the Win".

Critics of Comcast's Time Warner Cable Deal Are Feeling Hopeful
The Comcast-Time Warner merger has been put on hold for the time being in order for the FCC and other vested government agencies to do a closer examination of the acquisition. The re-examination of the terms of the agreements and possible down the road consequences are giving the opposition reason to smile, but just a bit.

Consumers rarely like cable or phone company mergers, mostly because they worry their bills will go up and the customer service will go down. The FCC has already gotten 81,000 comments, mostly from consumers.

AT&T Ruins Apple SIM by Locking It to Their Carrier
Apple's new SIM concept technology was too good to be true if you are an AT&T customer. AT&T has made it impossible for you to change carriers using the Apple SIM once you have selected AT&T as your primary, negating the multi-carrier function of the Apple SIM. Twitter Acquires Twitpic's Archive, Saga Finally Ends
The on again/off again closing of Twitpic has been greatly prolonged since the service first announced it would be shutting down. Just when things looked their darkest for Twitpic, Twitter stepped up to the plate and struck an agreement to save and preserve the Twitpic archives.


In the end, it looks like almost everyone wins. Everett got rid of Twitpic, Twitter got rid of a service with a name that was probably too similar to its own for comfort and users don't have to worry about their images disappearing into the night.

Abandoned Subdomains Pose Security Risk for Businesses
Security firm Detectify has extended a warning to companies that have external service subdomains that are no longer in use by the company or being maintained. The unused subdomains are a security risk just waiting to be exploited and the severity of the exploitation risk depends on the permissions and use of the individual subdomains.

The security firm created an online tool that can help organizations check if they have subdomains vulnerable to this attack.

Ford Gives Pedestrian-Spotting Bumpers Access to the Brakes
Ford is working on a system called The Pedestrian Detection, that will effectively spot pedestrians coming into your path and preemptively stops the car if you are otherwise distracted.

Ford says that, following the European Mondeo launch, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection will be progressively offered as an option on other Ford and Lincoln models around the world.

Chromebooks are finding their niche in the computer world, filling in the gaps for the lower end of the computing spectrum. The growth of Chromebooks has been spurred on by educational institutions in the past and more recently by emerging markets.

Google has just opened the flood gates for new members for Google's new Inbox. The initial batch of members were from requests made for invitations directly to Google, but now, present members can issue invites to any number of friends.

Inbox is basically Google's version of Mailbox or Boxer. It's designed to help you get through email faster, create to-do lists and easily snooze messages you want to address later.

The NYPD Will Give Smartphones to Its Officers
As part of the NYPD Mobility Initiative, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday that the 35K officers of the NYPD will all be receiving smartphones and police cruisers will be fitted with tablets. Welcome to the 21st Century, NYPD.

The touchscreen devices issued to cops will be connected to a cellular network, which will give officers in the field "expanded search capabilities," which simply means they can more easily search NYPD databases on the go.
