Toshiba's uber-cheap Windows 8.1 tablet costs $120
Here I was thinking that $149 Archos tablet was as cheap as Windows 8.1 slates could get. Well, Archos has just been undercut by Toshiba, whose new Encore Mini tablet serves up Win8.1 for only $119.99.

Asus slaps the Eee brand on a $199 neo-netbook with Win8.1
Didn't I say netbooks were making a comeback? Well, I don't know what else you'd call this development. Engadget has the dirt on Asus' newly announced EeeBook X205, a $199 Windows 8.1 laptop that bears the iconic netbook brand name.
According to this report, the EeeBook X205 has an 11.6" 1366x768 display, an Atom T3735 processor, 2GB of RAM, either 32GB or 64GB of built-in flash storage, and ...

WD adds SD slot, Wi-Fi to external hard drive
Despite being incredibly useful, portable hard drives are rarely interesting. WD's new My Passport Wireless is different, though. It combines the usual 2.5" mechanical drive and USB 3.0 interface with an SD card slot and robust Wi-Fi connectivity. The SD slot enables photos and videos to be loaded onto the drive without the assistance of a PC. Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi fuels media streaming, remote management, and other goodies.

AMD: Only certain new Radeons will work with FreeSync displays
There's one specific bit of news in my Radeon R9 285 review that's worthy of calling out in more detail. During a briefing on that new graphics card, AMD revealed something about its Project FreeSync display initiative that we hadn't heard before.
FreeSync, you may recall, is AMD's initiative to enable variable-refresh display technology for smoother in-game animation. This project was conceived as an ...

There's a new quad-stream 802.11ac router out, and this one may be the most powerful yet. AMD's FX-8370E processor reviewed
In many ways, AMD's FX processor series seems to have fallen by the wayside lately. While A-series APUs were refreshed with new Kaveri silicon this past January, the FX family has been trucking along with the same Vishera silicon since 2012. The accompanying 990FX chipset is a year older and begging for a replacement. At this point, one might have expected AMD to let the FX family die a dignified death—then fill in the gaps with high-octane Kaveri APUs.
But that's not ...

AMD's Radeon R9 285 graphics card reviewed
As a guy who reviews video cards, it's pretty easy to become cynical about these things. That's been especially true during the past couple of years, as we've seen the same handful of graphics chips spun into multiple "generations" of products. The core GPU technology is a technological wonder, but the endless re-spins get to be tiresome.
When AMD revealed the imminent arrival of the Radeon R9 285 recently, I have to admit, I wasn't exactly thrilled. Yes, the R9 285 would be ...
