You might have heard about the little stunt Nvidia pulled at its Game24 event yesterday. Using real-time global illumination on its new Maxwell GPUs, the company attempted to simulate the conditions of the moon landing—and "debunk" lunar landing conspiracy theories. Take a look:

The SSD Endurance Experiment: Only two remain after 1.5PB
You won't believe how much data can be written to modern SSDs. No, seriously. Our ongoing SSD Endurance Experiment has demonstrated that some consumer-grade drives can withstand over a petabyte of writes before burning out. That's a hyperbole-worthy total for a class of products typically rated to survive only a few hundred terabytes at most.
Our experiment began with the Corsair Neutron GTX 240GB, Intel 335 Series 240GB, Samsung 840 Series 250GB, and Samsung 840 Pro 256GB, plus two Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB drives. They all surpassed their endurance specifications, but the ...

GeForce GTX 970, 980 cards already widely available
Gotta love hard launches. On the morning after the introduction of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970 and 980, both cards are already widely available online.
As I write this, Newegg has six GTX 970 variants in stock, including three that are priced at $329.99. I guess that's what Nvidia's $329 suggested e-tail price (SEP) ...

Curved VA panel powers 27'' Samsung monitor
I guess curved PC monitors are a thing now. Samsung is the latest to join the party with the S27D590C, a concave 27-incher that "matches the natural curve of the human eye." The gentle bow is supposed to ensure a "nearly uniform" viewing distance between the user and any region of the screen—provided they're positioned front and center, anyway.
As it turns out, sitting directly in front of the display isn't strictly necessary. The monitor's VA panel boasts wide 178° viewing angles that should deliver good picture ...

Android L to encrypt devices by default
Looks like Apple isn't the only one pandering to privacy advocates. As the Washington Post reports, Google has made a similar announcement. Starting with Android L, user data will be encrypted and inaccessible to the government by default:
The Post says privacy advocates are "ecstatic" about the announcements from both Apple and Google. As the paper points out, though, Android L isn't coming out until October, and the new default behavior may take a long time to propagate across the Android ecosystem. ...

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 980 and 970 graphics cards reviewed
2014 has been a strange year for graphics chips. Many of the GeForce and Radeon graphics cards currently on the market are based on GPUs over two years old. Rather than freshening up their entire silicon lineups top-to-bottom like in the past, AMD and Nvidia have chosen to take smaller, incremental steps forward.

Both firms introduced larger chips based on existing GPU architectures last year. Then, two weeks ago, the Tonga GPU in the Radeon R9 285 surprised us with formidable new technology that's still somewhat mysterious. Before that, this past spring, Nvidia unveiled its ...

Xbone controller for Windows is coming; still isn't wireless
Using the Xbox One controller with Windows has been possible since early June, but it requires a USB cable. In November, Microsoft plans to market a version of the gamepad aimed specifically at PC users. It's called the Xbox One Controller + Cable for Windows—and in case the model name isn't clear enough, no, it still won't work wirelessly with PCs.
"Connect with cable on your PC," says the Microsoft Store product page, hammering the point home. "Play wired or wirelessly ...

Apple: With iOS 8, we can't give your data to the government
With its reputation still reeling from that celebrity photo leak, Apple has added a new privacy section to its website. That section includes a subsection on government information requests, and the statements therein could help burnish Apple's reputation with privacy advocates:
On devices running iOS 8, your personal data such as photos, messages (including attachments), email, contacts, call history, iTunes content, notes, and reminders is placed under the protection of your passcode. Unlike our competitors, Apple ...

Monitor scaler makers commit to FreeSync hardware
AMD is collaborating with the "industry's biggest scaler vendors" to produce dynamic refresh hardware for PC monitors. According to the official AMD press release, MStar, Novatek, and Realtek have all committed to producing chips that exploit the Adaptive-Sync capability built into the DisplayPort spec. FreeSync is based on Adaptive-Sync, and each scaler vendor is working on a "range" of options that should appear before the end of the year. Those scalers are destined for monitors due in the first quarter of 2015.
Although FreeSync is based on a royalty-free standard, there are some strings attached. Only certain Radeons will work with the technology. Also, the initial batch ...

AOC's new backlight tech saves your eyeballs from harmful wavelengths
A lot of us spend the majority of our waking hours staring at LCD displays. That's tough on the eyes for various reasons, including the fact that LED backlights can emit short-wave blue light in the 380-450 nm range. These emissions are a possible "contributor to vision impairments," according to monitor maker AOC, which has developed a technique to reduce the damaging output. The simply named Anti-Blue Light technology will debut this year in a new line of 76V Series monitors.
