Friday night topic: How often do you unplug?
With Google and Apple trying to sell us wearable tech, and everyone else force-feeding us the Internet of things, the trend lately is toward more screen time, not less. It's like we're expected to have an Internet-enabled contraption in our face at all times.
Funny thing, though. More and more often these past few months, I've been leaving my phone at home when taking walks outside. It started with simple forgetfulness, but it's turned into a ritual of sorts. See, there's something awfully relaxing, downright serene about not having the Internet in my pocket. ...

What's your biggest PC bottleneck?
Modern PCs are incredibly powerful. They have multi-core CPUs, massively parallel graphics processors, gobs of memory, and ever-larger solid-state drives. Some of them are still bottlenecked, though, whether by a lack of horsepower, sufficient memory, speedy storage, or even battery life to keep a mobile machine running off the mains.
Those limiting factors depend on not only the system configuration, but also what you're trying to do—and where you're trying to ...

Grand Theft Auto V's PC release pushed to 2015
A couple months ago, Rockstar announced that a spruced-up version of Grand Theft Auto V would hit the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in the fall. That schedule put the PC release a year behind the initial launch for last-gen consoles, but at least the newer consoles were in the same boat.
Welp, not anymore. In a move that will surprise exactly no one, Rockstar has revised its release timeline for the PC version. The PS4 and Xbone are getting the game on November 18, but PC gamers will have to wait ...

Leaked shots show Windows 9 Technical Preview UI
Rumor has it that a public preview of Windows 9 is due out later this month. Now, we know what it might look like. German site Computerbase has posted 20 screenshots of what it claims to be a build of the Windows 9 Technical Preview.
The erste Bilder on the site show windowed modern UI apps, multiple desktops, and of course, the reinstated Start menu, which Microsoft first demoed in April. That's not all, though. The shots also reveal some tweaks to the ...

Keyboardio floats like a butterfly, stings with your thumbs
We do an awful lot of typing here at TR, so I couldn't resist writing about an intriguing new keyboard design from start-up Keyboardio. The company is putting the finishing touches on a butterfly-shaped board that's supposed to let one's hands rest in a more natural position. The organization of the alphanumeric keys is largely similar to that of traditional keyboards, but the rest of the keys have been rearranged to shift the load from weaker pinkie fingers to stronger thumbs.

Asus' dual-Xeon workstation board exudes glorious excess
Xeons based on Intel's new Haswell-EP silicon debuted earlier this week. They have up to 18 cores apiece, and a pair of 'em can ride in Asus' Z10PE-D8 WS workstation motherboard. This two-headed monster has dual Xeon sockets primed for the latest E5-2600 v3 processors. Each socket is flanked by quad DDR4 memory slots, allowing the board to accommodate a staggering 512GB of RAM.
Check out the massive 12" x 13" circuit board, which has the same footprint ...

Skylake reference designs have wireless charging, WiGig networking
During yesterday's IDF keynote, Intel demoed mobile systems with wireless charging and WiGig networking. Scott surmised that those features could be integrated into the Skylake generation of systems, and it turns out he was right. During a subsequent IDF "mega session" on reinventing the PC, Intel General Manager Kirk Skaugen confirmed that wireless charging and Wireless Gigabit connectivity will both be part of Skylake reference designs for developers.

Intel's Android reference design promises OS updates for two years
Intel has introduced a new initiative to help device makers create Android tablets based on its hardware. The simply named Intel Reference Design Platform for Android provides a single OS image that can be used with "pre-qualified" components and system configurations. Intel will take care of certifying the image, ensuring that compatible devices have access to the full suite of applications available via Google Mobile Services.
Although the program is designed to accelerate device development, long-term support is also part of the plan. Intel pledges to keep its reference image in step with the latest version of Android for a full two ...
