Tennis - Djoker won't tag Federer as favourite for US Open
-
World number one Novak Djokovic said he'd let others decide who's
favourite for the US Open after expectations soared that Roger Federer
could claim a record-extending 18th Grand Slam title at the age of 33.
The Wimbledon champion refused to enter the debate about the likeliest
winner before starting his campaign against 79th-ranked Diego
Schwartzman on Monday. I leave it to the people to really judge who is
the one, two, three or number four favorite," said Djokovic, who on
paper faces a tougher path than Federer with 2012 champion Andy Murray,
French dangerman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and big-serving American John Isner
in his quarter. Djokovic beat Federer in the Wimbledon final but the
Swiss underlined his strong form by warming up with a victory at this
month's Cincinnati Masters.Read More ...

New Zealand Rugby bans fireworks after mishap
New
Zealand rugby chiefs on Monday suspended all pre-match fireworks as
authorities investigate an accident before last weekend's All
Blacks-Wallabies Test that left three people injured. New Zealand fan
Cecilia Wang was hospitalised with a gash to her forehead and two men
suffered minor injuries when a giant fireball primed to go off after the
All Blacks finished the haka war dance exploded with more force than
anticipated, sending shrapnel into the crowd. I tried to hold her cut
but the blood wouldn't stop, it was like opening tap water, it kept
coming out," he told Fairfax New Zealand. New Zealand Rugby Union chief
executive has apologised to the injured fans and said there will be no
more fireworks until an official WorkSafe New Zealand investigation is
completed.Read More ...

Death toll from Hiroshima landslides reaches 50
The
death toll from devastating midweek landslides in Hiroshima rose to 50
with 38 others missing on Sunday as fresh rain stoked fears of more
disasters and hampered the round-the-clock search for survivors. Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe called off a planned inspection tour of the western
Japan city by helicopter on the day as his presence was feared to
further complicate the search and rescue mission as rain intensified,
media reports said. Meanwhile, two women were killed Sunday on the
remote island of Rebun, some 1,350-kilometres (840 miles) northeast of
Hiroshima, when a rain-triggered landslide crushed their home, local
officials said. The Hiroshima regional police headquarters updated the
death and missing figures Sunday morning after a 83-year-old man was
confirmed dead four days after unusual downpours caused landslides that
swallowed dozens of homes, many of them perched on hillside housing
areas.Read More ...
