Resident Evil remake to be released next year on consoles, PC
Capcom has officially announced that it will be re-releasing the original Resident Evil game next year, with Producers Tatsuya Kitabayashi and Yoshiaki Hirabyashi saying that they were trying their best to not mess anything up when rebuilding one of the survival horror games that started it all.
TweakTown image resident_evil_remake_to_be_released_next_year_on_consoles_pc
Hirabyashi said: "We have been very careful to preserve the original atmosphere of the game, and are ensuring that no unnecessary changes will be made. The tempo and flow of the original game are an inherent part of its scary atmosphere so we have made the decision not to disrupt this tempo". Most of the changes to Resident Evil will be in the graphics department, and not in gameplay. Kitabayashi chimed in with: "When it comes to graphics, we didn't just want them to look better, we have taken the game apart, polished up all the different elements and carefully reassembled them in such a way that its original atmosphere shines through".
Resident Evil will be launched once again next year for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC.

Dell is actively working on tech that can read your emotional state
A top Dell Research and Development executive has claimed the company is working on technology to read people's moods, and a commercial application may be on the shelves by 2017.
TweakTown image dell_is_actively_working_on_tech_that_can_read_your_emotional_state
According to Jai Menon, Dell is actively developing software that can interpret brain activity and register when a user is in different emotional states. He expects this kind of technology to find potential applications at home and at work. "If I can sense the user is working hard on a task, an intuitive computer system might then reduce distractions, such as allowing incoming phone calls to go directly to voicemail and not letting the user be disturbed," he told the BBC. "Similarly, if they've been concentrating for a long time, maybe it could suggest a break."
The claims will certainly have privacy advocates on edge, as critics suggest some computer companies already know too much about users. But Menon insisted there will be positive uses for consumers, such as in the gaming sector. "If someone is playing a game and it sense they are bored, it could ratchet up the level of challenge automatically," he said.

Billions of credentials stolen in largest criminal data theft ever
An American web security company, Hold Security, claims Russian criminal rings have built enormous databases of 1.2 billion stolen usernames and passwords, along with half a billion email addresses.
TweakTown image billions_of_credentials_stolen_in_largest_criminal_data_theft_ever
This heist will be the biggest identity theft of data in the history of the internet, according to Hold Security, and it is thought to have compromised roughly 420,000 websites. Hold has not named the companies it believes were hit but asserted brands both big and small are among those affected.
"We were amazed when 10,000 passwords went missing," company founder Alex Holden said. "Now we're in the age of mass production of stolen information. These guys did nothing new, they just did it better and on a mass level so it affects absolutely everybody."

Sony gives up on e-book market as it axes Reader devices in Europe
Sony has abandoned its e-reader business in Europe after being thoroughly trounced by products like Amazon's Kindle, it has emerged.
TweakTown image sony_gives_up_on_e_book_market_as_it_axes_reader_devices_in_europe
The Japanese company launched its e-book Reader devices to a largely tepid response from consumers in Europe. Its last model, the PRS-T3, will stay on sale in the continent but only until supplies run out, with the company confirming to the BBC that it has "no plans" to develop a successor. Existing customers have been pointed towards the Kobo e-reader device since February in North America and since May in Europe and Australia, according to a spokesperson. Sony's Readers will continue to be available in the company's native Japanese market, where the Sony Reader Store remains functional.
The overall e-reader market is totally dominated by Amazon and its kindle, although the sector is predicted to be on the wane in general as it is cannibalized by tablets and smartphones.

Sony to abandon e-reader business when current stock runs out
After three generations of solid e-reader devices, Japanese electronics giant Sony is set to abandon the format, following stiff competition from competing devices, including Amazon's Kindle and Kobo alongside declining sales as consumers increasingly favour tablet devices.

According to a report published on the BBC website, Sony have already ceased production on their current device, the PRS-T3 and will exit the business when stock is exhausted from their inventory chain.
The PRS-T3 already shows as "out of stock" on the Sony Australia website.

Sony have been facing an uphill battle over the last few years, from declining sales, a high currency and increased competition from Korean rivals such as LG and Samsung. Earlier this year, Sony similarly announced plans to exit its VAIO laptop business, although its perpetually loss making television division has been quarantined for now, with the wide perception that it personifies the heart of the company.

Thousands rally behind lawsuit that claims Facebook broke EU data law
Over 17,000 Facebook users have rallied behind and joined in on an Austrian man's lawsuit against the social network, which alleges the service breaks data protection laws.
TweakTown image thousands_rally_behind_lawsuit_that_claims_facebook_broke_eu_data_law
Max Schrems, 26, filed a lawsuit on 1 August and invited anyone else who so wished to join in. An app created specifically for the lawsuit helped interested users file the personal details of their Facebook account into the lawsuit, along with scans proving their identity and addresses - by Monday this week 5,000 had joined, and now the figure's approaching 20,000. The case is filed against Facebook Ireland. Schrems insists the division of the company has insisted in supporting the NSA's spying programme, as detailed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, and in doing so has broken European data protection laws. Each user's personal data is being set at 500 Euros - roughly 660 USD.
20 percent of any damages will be awarded to a litigation funding company backing the suit, Roland Prozessfinanz, with the rest going to the users. If the amount awarded is under five Euros, the balance will be donated to a charity. The app created for the complaints underlined that the strength of the lawsuit is in its numbers, and that if enough people join in it will present enough of a financial risk to Facebook for the company to take notice.

SpaceX Falcon Rocket launch successfully places AsiaSat 8 in orbit
Elon Musk's SpaceX has recorded another success for placing a satellite in orbit above the Earth. SpaceX successfully launched its Falcon 9 rocket after an early delay this week. The Falcon rocket placed the AsiaSat 8 satellite into orbit without further issues.
TweakTown image spacex_falcon_rocket_launch_successfully_places_asiasat_8_in_orbit
The launch of the rocket was delayed from 1:25 am EST to 4am EST due to a last minute issue with the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket. The first stage issue was fixed, and the launch went off without a hitch. AsiaSat 8 was placed in orbit 22,300 miles above the Earth.
At that altitude, the satellite will be used to provide satellite TV service and telecom service to customers in China, India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East for the next 15 years. SpaceX will launch another AsiaSat later this month.

Scientists observe three massive volcanic eruptions on Io
The Earth is one of the most volcanically active bodies in our solar system, but it's not alone in having volcanic activity. Jupiter's moon Io is one of the most volcanically active bodies scientists have ever observed and three massive eruptions were discovered on the surface of the moon. These three major events were imaged in August 2013, but the images have only now been released.
TweakTown image scientists_observe_three_massive_volcanic_eruptions_on_io
The trio of eruptions was recorded in a two-week span, surprising researchers because only 13 major eruptions have been recording between 1978 and 2006. Scientists expect a massive outburst once every one or two years. This event recorded three extremely bright outbursts in a span of two weeks.
The scientists believe that these outbursts show that if they looked at Io more frequently, more outbursts would be noted. Io is only 2300 miles wide, making it about the same size as the Earth's moon. The volcanic activity is the result of Jupiter and neighboring moons pulling on Io causing its insides to heat up.

US DOT may stop plans to allow in-flight cell phone use
Anyone who has flown on a commercial airline knows how annoying it can be when someone near you refuses to put up a gadget when asked to by the crew. I can only imagine how annoying it would be if airlines allowed people to use their mobile phones all they want while on a flight. As airlines are considering allowing phone calls during flights, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) is considering weighing in on the subject.
TweakTown image us_dot_may_stop_plans_to_allow_in_flight_cell_phone_use
The DOT is considering the implementation of rules that would enforce a ban on in-flight cell phone calls according to the WSJ. The DOT is seeking comments on whether or not it should adopt a rule that restricts mobile calls on flights to and from the US.
The DOT is clear that there are no bans on in-flight calls in the works yet. Many of the major airlines operating in the US have already said they aren't inclined to allow phone calls in-flight. Things like texting or email would probably be allowed even if phone calls are banned.

Comcast offers poor families six months of free internet access
Comcast has revamped its low cost internet program that is in place for poor families to ensure that they have access to the web for education and other uses. The original program that Comcast offered was criticized for being too hard to sign up for. After the criticism, Comcast has revamped the program and is offering up to six months of internet access for free to new subscribers.
TweakTown image comcast_offers_poor_families_six_months_of_free_internet_access
The program gives poor families access to Internet Essentials for $10 per month if there are school age children in the house. Comcast is also offering existing customers with unpaid bills an amnesty program where they can be reconnected in some instances.
The catch with the amnesty program is that the overdue bills and unreturned equipment has to be over a year old to be eligible. For bills that are less than a year old, Comcast wants the debt settled before the customers can sign up.

Cyberith Virtualizer hits $250k funding goal, still has 26 days to go
After just a few days on Kickstarter, Cyberith has reached its goal of $250,000 for the Virtualizer. The Virtualizer still has 26 days to go, so we could see this be another large Kickstarter success story.
The Virtualizer is "an award-winning locomotion device for Virtual Reality that allows the user to move freely in virtual environments. Step inside the game and become one with your character". It is one of the biggest talked about devices that is coming soon, especially when the world's of the Virtualizer and the Oculus Rift combine.
Cyberith had 150 of its 'Virtualizer Early Bird' pledges up for offer, at $699, with them now all gone. There were also 750 of the 'Virtualizer Standard (Full Package)' that were all sold out, priced at $799 each. The $949 pledge, which is known as the 'Virtualizer HT (Early Bird)' still has 56 left of 150. There are plenty of other levels available on the Virtualizer Kickstarter, but with its $250,000 funding goal met and 26 days to go, I think we might see this edge closer to $500,000 without a problem.

Microsoft to release white Xbox One console with Sunset Overdrive
Microsoft is preparing two Xbox One bundles in the coming months, with the first being EA Tiburon's Madden NFL 15, while the second is Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive. Sunset Overdrive's bundle will include a white-colored Xbox One, something quite unique.
TweakTown image microsoft_to_release_white_xbox_one_console_with_sunset_overdrive
Starting with the Madden NFL 15 bundle, which will see the normal black Xbox One without Kinect included, with a code for the digital version of Madden NFL 15 in the box, for $399. Considering its $399 for the Xbox One without Kinect, you're just getting Madden NFL 15 for free. The bundle should be available when Madden NFL 15 launches, later this month on August 26.
The other bundle, with Sunset Overdrive, will include a white Xbox One. This marks the first time that the public will have the option of purchasing a white Xbox One, with the only other time being when the company launched the Xbox One last year, making them available for employees of Microsoft and no one else. Sunset Overdrive launches on October 28 exclusive to the Xbox One, so we should hear more information on the bundle before then.

CD Projekt Red: DX12 isn't going to help the Xbox One at 1080p
The Witcher 3's Lead Engine Programmer, Balazs Torok, spoke with Gaming Bolt where he had some interesting things to say about DirectX 12. Torok said that while DX12 will allow developers to pull more triangles out of the Xbox One's GPU, the shading power inside of the Microsoft's console isn't enough to make it worth it.
TweakTown image cd_projekt_red_dx12_isn_t_going_to_help_the_xbox_one_at_1080p
He added: "I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve. Most games out there can't go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything". Torok continued: "They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose. I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully".
What do we take away from that? Well, the Xbox One is capable of 1080p gaming, but what he is saying is that DirectX 12 won't improve the performance at 1080p when it arrives.

BitFenix Comrade Mid-Tower Chassis Review

Introduction, Specifications and Pricing

TweakTown image bitfenix_comrade_mid_tower_chassis_review
It is time for yet another chassis in the BitFenix lineup, and this chassis is a close relative to the Neos chassis we looked at recently. With this design implementation, there is only one major change to the chassis, and it all lies in the aesthetics; more specifically, the front bezel. Where we saw lots of mesh and angular lines in the frame of the Neos' bezel, this time around, things are much more streamlined, and there are just subtle design details that break up the more solid design.
With the cases being nearly identical, we know that we get a recently tooled interior design that offers almost everything a case builder needs to get a basic system built, without much fuss and effort. Of course, the design keeps things like the SofTouch panel that BitFenix is known for, but overall, the outside of this chassis is far more simplistic. This chassis also comes in two forms and flavors; it can be had in both black and white, and there is also an optional left side window if you want to see what is inside of it.
Since we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect with this latest chassis from BitFenix to be reviewed, the Comrade mid-tower chassis, we may as well get straight to the point, and cover the chassis in its entirety. Stick with us as we deliver the BitFenix Comrade in all of its glory, and you can decide if this is the next economically friendly chassis for you.
TweakTown image bitfenix_comrade_mid_tower_chassis_review
As most cases are, the Comrade is made mostly of steel that is painted throughout, with the exception of the plastic used for filters, feet, and the bezel. As we mentioned previously, there are two color choices, and even though this chart does not specify, there is a windowed option out there as well. The chassis is pretty compact since it is within mid-tower size requirements, but it can still house Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, or ATX motherboards, with a bit of room to spare.
The rest of the interior offers a trio of 5.25" drives, where the Neos only offered two, but this is due to a new location for the I/O panel. There is room for three 3.5" drives in the lowest rack, and in a thinner rack above it, there is also room for three 2.5" drives. At the back of the chassis there are seven expansion slots, as well as a pair of holes with grommets in them to allow for external water cooling. Speaking of cooling, in this design there is room for a pair of 120mm fans in the front of the chassis, behind a removable dust filter, but there are no fans located here when shipped. The other location for cooling the chassis can be found at the back of the Comrade, where the included 120mm fan is installed as an exhaust.
What it really boils down to is whether or not the styling of the Comrade wins over the Neos we just looked at. However, there is one other major consideration to take into account as well. Although the Neos is more striking with the various color options of both the chassis and the mesh inserts, this Comrade is a bit plainer to look at. However, the pricing of the Comrade is also considerably less than the Neos.
While the pricing of the Neos is much closer to the $70 mark, we are finding the Comrade to be listed just about everywhere we look, regardless of color choice, for just $49.99. Since the Comrade offers most of the same features at a lower price point, those savings could be used for fans, or to help stretch a budget build that much further; you could spring for a larger SSD, or spend a bit more on an aftermarket cooler. These are all good reasons to consider the Comrade, and after we show you the ins and outs of this mid-tower chassis, you will likely see it in the same light we do. In our opinion, the Comrade is pretty well laid out, and it has a good feature set for its cost.

Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB Vapor-X OC Overclocked Video Card Review

Introduction of the Sapphire R9 290X 4GB Vapor-X OC

TweakTown image sapphire_radeon_r9_290x_4gb_vapor_x_oc_overclocked_video_card_review
Coming off of some cheaper mid-range video cards, we move to the other end of the scale to see what's going on with AMD's highest-end single GPU offering, the R9 290X 4GB. We've always loved this card since its inception, and we think it has done a marvelous job of taking on the current generation of games.
The particular version we're looking at today comes from Sapphire and sits in as part of the Vapor-X series, a series that we've always loved, and one that has carried with it some awesome performance improvements when compared to the reference versions from AMD.
The Vapor-X Series has been an impressive one, and while Sapphire does offer some great improvements to clock speeds when it comes to comparing it to the reference version of the card, we're going to kick it up a notch and take the clock speeds even higher to see just what kind of performance we can get out of this single GPU beast from Sapphire.
We already know so much about Sapphire and the R series of video cards from AMD that it really feels like there's not a whole lot more that needs to be said here. So, saying that, let's just leave it here and move forward to see what's going on with the package of the Sapphire R9 290X 4GB Vapor-X OC.

Package - What comes inside the box

TweakTown image sapphire_radeon_r9_290x_4gb_vapor_x_oc_overclocked_video_card_review
TweakTown image sapphire_radeon_r9_290x_4gb_vapor_x_oc_overclocked_video_card_review
Taking a look at the box, we have the black and blue color scheme that helps us recognize the card is part of the popular Vapor-X series. In the top right corner, you can see the model and series, while across the bottom we have some of the main features, which include the fact this card is an OC Edition and carries with it the Vapor-X cooler in a Tri-X setup. You can also see the fans are dual ball bearing as well for added quality.
Turning the box over, you can see that Sapphire offers a bit of a blurb on the left side with a picture of the card. On the right side of the box, you can see some of those main features mentioned on the front. Looking closely, you can see that most of the focus is on the cooler, with the main highlights covering the Vapor-X cooling technology, the Tri-X triple fan setup, and the Intelligent Fan Control (IFC) to help keep noise levels down when the card isn't under a huge amount of load.

TweakTown image sapphire_radeon_r9_290x_4gb_vapor_x_oc_overclocked_video_card_review
Moving inside the box, you can see the bundle is the standard Sapphire one, which includes a Quick Install Guide, a leaflet on Sapphire Technology Club, a driver CD, two dual Molex to 8-Pin PCIe power connectors, and an HDMI cable.
Along with all that, you can see that Sapphire has included a mouse pad, something that we also saw in the Vapor-X version of the R9 290 4GB. We're not really a huge fan of this addition. Sure, anything extra is nice, but the quality of it isn't great, and it just feels thrown into the bundle. The quality of it is just leaps and bounds away from the quality of the card that Sapphire has put together.
PRICING: You can find the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC for sale below. The prices listed are valid at the time of writing but can change at any time. Click the link to see the very latest pricing for the best deal.
United States: The Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC retails for $627.97 at Amazon.

ROCCAT Launches Nyth MMO Mouse and Skeltr Keyboard
ROCCAT Studios rolls full-speed into late summer with a fresh and exciting design philosophy, and two groundbreaking new products to represent ROCCAT's trailblazing peripheral creation. Making their first appearances at Gamescom 2014 in Cologne, Germany this August, the Nyth gaming mouse, and Skeltr gaming keyboard are set to take the gaming world by storm.
TweakTown image roccat_launches_nyth_mmo_mouse_and_skeltr_keyboardTweakTown image roccat_launches_nyth_mmo_mouse_and_skeltr_keyboard
René Korte, CEO and founder of ROCCAT discusses the amazingly versatile Nyth, an MMO mouse that is so much more. Says René, "We've wanted to develop our own MMO mouse for a long time, but like always, we end up seeing a bigger picture once we begin brainstorming. MMO mice have these massive button grids that are locked in. You can change the button functionality, but what if you don't like the layout? Our solution is a wholly modular MMO mouse, with interchangeable button combinations that suit the player. No two gamers are alike, and because we know that, we've gone many steps beyond just allowing them to switch out the in-package button options. Our fans will have access to our button inventory files, and those that are into 3D printing can even create their very own."
TweakTown image roccat_launches_nyth_mmo_mouse_and_skeltr_keyboardTweakTown image roccat_launches_nyth_mmo_mouse_and_skeltr_keyboard
But ROCCAT didn't stop there. "The Nyth's soul is MMO," René explains," but with high modularity comes versatility, and we capitalized on that in the design room. Not only is this an incredible, one of a kind MMO mouse, but with a replaceable side-part, coupled with our button modularity, the Nyth can absolutely transition into a perfectly fine-tuned MOBA mouse, and yes, even an FPS mouse. I wanted to know if we had the ability to create a hybrid mouse, a chameleon, that perfectly matches up with each gaming genre. The Nyth was the result of asking this questions, and I can tell you there is nothing like it in gaming. The Nyth adapts, evolves, and keeps on giving far into the future. It's a remarkable peripheral conceptualized and created by our amazing design team."
TweakTown image roccat_launches_nyth_mmo_mouse_and_skeltr_keyboard
While excited to unveil Nyth to the Gamescom crowd, that's not all we have in store for visitors of ROCCAT's massive ROCC-City booth. Changing the way gamers interact with the second screen option, ROCCAT presents the Skeltr, a first of its kind, ROCCAT-invented, fully integrated smartphone and keyboard combo that brings social interaction and gaming into perfect balance. "Life doesn't stop because you're gaming. We receive calls, we make calls, we text. The Skeltr is the answer to a world where gaming, interacting with your friends, and utilizing a second-screen as a tool in the game arsenal makes a lot of sense, "says René. "Our feedback-built Skeltr is Bluetooth compatible, allowing the smooth visualization of vital PC data to your smart device. It allows gamers to use their phones as a highly interactive compliment to the game they're playing. We also believe being able to use your keyboard to communicate on your smartphone is a nobrainer feature ROCCAT fans will deeply appreciate. Our designers worked very hard to make these integrative experiences that gamers can use second nature, without distraction."
The Skeltr's sliding rail and rotating holster fit every size smart device, ensuring that using both the keyboard and second-screen never feels cumbersome to players. With brilliant RGB illumination, no ghosting, and most every other function that ROCCAT fans have come to expect from a ROCCAT keyboard, the Skeltr is both familiar and trailblazing all at the same time. Finishes René, "The Skeltr is our first foray into this new world of keyboard and smartphone integration, but it certainly won't be our last."
Gamescom 2014 is the place to see both up close and personal in 2014, with release dates for the Skeltr and Nyth being made later this year.

PMC Unveils the Flashtec NVRAM Drives
PMC, the semiconductor and software solutions innovator transforming networks that connect, move and store big data, today established a new ultra-fast storage class memory tier to accelerate critical applications in scale-out storage and all-flash arrays. The PMC Flashtec NVRAM Drives combine the speed and endurance of DRAM with the persistency of NAND flash to deliver ten times higher performance than the fastest Solid State Drive (SSD), at more than 10 million I/Os per second (IOPS), with sub-microsecond latency.
TweakTown image pmc_unveils_the_flashtec_nvram_drives
Leveraging PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0, the Flashtec NVRAM Drives connect directly to the host to optimize CPU utilization and maximize overall system performance. The latest member of PMC's enterprise-class Flashtec portfolio of controllers and drives, the new solutions are based on the industry-standard NVMe interface to enable plug-and-play PCIe connectivity, which decreases time to market in data center and enterprise storage deployments.
"Native PCIe-based solutions are a major disruption to the SSD market because they provide a direct link between the CPU and flash, breaking the traditional performance scale," said Derek Dicker, vice president of the NVM Solutions Group at PMC. "The PMC Flashtec family sets a new benchmark for storage performance, and our standards-based architecture allows our customers to get their storage solutions to market much sooner with differentiated features tuned for cost, performance and endurance."
The new Flashtec NVRAM Drives have DRAM endurance to boost overall performance of mission-critical applications, opening up bottlenecks in the system without compromising reliability or system uptime. The drives can be used as both a persistent memory extension mapped directly to the host, delivering more than 10 million IOPS for small, random access transactions, and as an NVMe block device for efficient DMA transactions, reaching more than one million random read 4KB IOPS.
The small form factor drives fit into virtually any server, using only one low-profile PCIe socket to enable high-density rack solutions. An in-box NVMe driver eases integration with no need for custom development to proprietary interfaces and applications. Designed with a Super Capacitor Module that operates for five years without maintenance or replacement, the Flashtec NVRAM Drives offer a significant cost of ownership improvement compared to solutions that require an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Removing the UPS from the system also frees up valuable rack space.
"Enterprise data centers for cloud computing and business-critical applications require high performance and quick access to data," said Jeff Janukowicz, research director for Solid State Drives at IDC. "PCIe storage has emerged as a key technology to deliver on these requirements in next-generation data centers, driven by the availability of high-performance, standards-based solutions like the PMC Flashtec products. Providing enterprise-class features and the highest performance puts PMC in position to capitalize on the tremendous growth of NAND flash based products for the data center."
Standards-based Architecture Accelerates Deployment of PCIe-Attached Storage
The Flashtec NVRAM Drive family is based on PMC's NVMe controllers, which provide the highest capacity, performance and reliability to store the world's critical data.
