The Radeon R9 285 will arrive Sep. 2 at $249
Looks like most of the rumors were spot-on about this one. In a live-streamed fan event this morning, AMD formally announced its next graphics card, the Radeon R9 285. This card is based on the Tonga GPU, a somewhat smaller and cheaper-to-produce successor to the Tahiti chip used in everything from the Radeon HD 7970 to the R9 280X. Tonga looks to be based on the slightly revised version of the GCN architecture used in the Radeon R9 290, which includes some new features like TrueAudio and XDMA CrossFire. Here's a look at the card and the full specs sheet revealed by AMD:

Deal of the week: Devil's Canyon for $194.99
It's that time of year again. Students are preparing for another term, and e-tailers have rolled out their back-to-school sales. Here are some of the more interesting PC hardware deals I found on the web this morning:
I should also note that Newegg has a bunch of discount codes for select SSDs, gaming laptops, monitors, motherboards, and other components. None of the individual items really jump out at me—except maybe the Crucial MX100 256GB ...

The most intriguing units are probably the "Rock Canyon" designs with Broadwell chips. These will reportedly use 15W versions of the CPU and come in Core i3 and i5 flavors. It looks like there will be two chassis designs: one thick enough to accommodate ...

Specs for upcoming FX-8300 chips leak out
You know those three FX-8000 processors AMD is supposed to introduce on Labor Day? Well, we may now know their specs. Or at least, the folks over at X-bit labs are claiming that they do.
According to X-bit labs, the litter of new CPUs will comprise the FX-8370, FX-8370E, and FX-8320E. The FX-8370 looks like a slightly speedier successor to the FX-8350, while the models with "E" suffixes seem to be lower-TDP variants of their non-E ...

We've all seen advertisements masquerading as editorial content—not on TR, of course, but elsewhere on the web. These "advertorials" are becoming increasingly prevalent, and they're not always clearly demarcated. Thankfully, there's now a way to sniff out this insidious content. Google programmer Ian Webster has created AdDetector, a plugin for Chrome and Firefox that identifies so-called "native advertising."
