Nvidia claims Haswell-class performance for Denver CPU core
Some of Nvidia's CPU architects gave a talk at the Hot Chips symposium today, and they revealed some long-awaited details about Nvidia's first custom CPU design. We weren't able to attend the talk, but the firm evidently pre-briefed some analysts about what it planned to say. There's a free-to-download whitepaper at Tirias Research on the Denver CPU core, and I've been scanning it eagerly to see what we can learn.

Nvidia's Shield Tablet reviewed
If you just glanced at Nvidia's new Shield Tablet, you might mistake it for any other Android slate. They all sort of look alike—rectangular touchscreens surrounded by simple bezels and backed by slim bodies—and the Shield doesn't break the mold. Unannounced Radeon R9 285 pictured online
AMD is rumored to be working on a new "Tonga" GPU that's reportedly destined to replace existing Tahiti silicon in the Radeon R9 280 and 280X. The chip is also expected to power a new card, the R9 285, and there's some fresh evidence on that front. Videocardz has posted pictures of R9 285 cards from Sapphire, XFX, and HIS. A couple of those shots include box art that clearly reveals the Radeon model designation and its 2GB memory capacity.

AMD spills beans on Seattle's architecture, reference server
For some time now, the features of AMD's Seattle server processor have been painted in broad brush strokes. We've known since last year about Seattle's eight ARM Cortex-A57 cores, its 28-nm process geometry, and AMD's plan to deliver it in late 2014. Khronos looks to rebuild OpenGL as a low-overhead API
Now that DirectX 12 and Mantle have committed to providing developers with quicker, more direct access to modern GPUs in a way that maps better to their operation, the folks behind OpenGL have decided to follow suit.
