Friday night topic: Driverless cars
The news that the UK will soon allow driverless cars on its roadways has me thinking. The prospects for driverless cars fascinate me. When a driver's attention is no longer required in our primary mode of transportation, many things are possible.
For instance, when my son and I drove up to the TR BBQ this year, we slept in our minivan on the nights before and after the event. Driving the 11 or so hours each way was pretty grueling, but the air mattress in the back of the van ...

Toxikk will let you 'frag like it's 1999'
I think we're all a little sick of realistic, war-themed multiplayer shooters. Happily, old-school game design seems to be making a comeback. Epic Games is hard at work on a new Unreal Tournament game true to the series' roots, and over in Germany, Reakktor Studios is developing a new multiplayer FPS that supposedly "plays as if today's military shooters never existed."
That FPS is called Toxikk , and ...

Report: Haswell-E is epoxied to its heat spreader
Geoff wrote about Haswell-E motherboards this morning. Now, we've got some fresh dirt on the CPU itself.
Malaysian overclocker Owikh84 has posted a picture of what he claims to be a Haswell-E processor, the Core i7-5960X, with its heat spreader sliced off. The delidding procedure clearly wrecked the chip, and that's the interesting part here: according to Owikh84, Intel "soldered the chip's ...

Rumor: Tonga GPU to power Radeon R9 285
New details have surfaced about AMD's rumored Tonga GPU. According to SweClockers, the chip is going to power a new, higher-end member of the Radeon R9 280 series—and AMD is planning the launch for "late August to early September."
The tip comes from "Taiwanese sources," who also told SweClockers that Tonga will come in two flavors, both with a 256-bit path to 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Tonga will ...

AMD's A10-7800 processor reviewed
We first reviewed an AMD Kaveri processor back at the start of the year, but since then, AMD's new APU has been in kind of a weird place. The A8-7600 chip we reviewed has been scarce in retail channels, evidently because AMD succeeded in selling them elsewhere—likely to big PC manufacturers. Some of the chips were surely set aside for use in laptops, too. As a result, PC hobbyists just haven't had very good access to AMD's latest APU.
Happily, that situation is finally changing, and Kaveri-based chips are starting to make their way into the market. AMD is putting an exclamation point on that fact today by filling out its ...

64-bit Chrome goes beta, promises better speed, security, stability
Slowly but surely, the 64-bit version of Google's browser is inching toward production readiness. As of yesterday, beta versions of 64-bit Chrome for Windows are available in a new release channel, which you can join by heading to this page.
64-bitness opens the door to greater memory allocation, naturally, but it also has other advantages for ...

PSU deathmatch: Cooler Master V750 vs. Rosewill Capstone-750-M
It's been a while since we last reviewed a power supply—so long that our last review samples are now fully fossilized, waiting to be recovered by future generations of geologists. The factories where they were built now manufacture flying cars, and the term "PSU" itself is now a portmanteau for an extremely vulgar dance move.
Well, all right. Maybe not quite. ...

Eizo's FlexScan EV3237 has 31.5'' of 4K goodness
Japanese display maker Eizo has added a monster 4K model to its stable. The FlexScan EV3237 spreads its 3840x2160 resolution over a 31.5" diagonal, resulting in a pixel density of 140 PPI. It's based on a "non-glare" IPS panel with 8-bit color reproduction, and it has a 10-bit look-up table that's supposed to smooth gradients.

Silent Power PC is cooled by copper foam
TR member willyolio posted this in our forums earlier today, and I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. Those crafty Germans have designed a passively cooled desktop PC with a huge, sponge-like heatsink at the top. Dubbed the Silent Power, the system looks pretty unique, to say the least:
