NCAA Can't Stop Athletes from Profiting from College Sports
How many times have you wished for the opportunity to see your favorite college players linked up with your favorite sports video game? Chances are now good that you will get your wish in the near future and you will have Federal Judge Claudia Wilkins to thank for the common sense.

Wilken's ruling directly challenges the rules laid down by the NCAA back in 1956, which governed the compensation of college athletes. Those rules limited student payments to scholarships, and prohibited profits beyond "commonly accepted educational expenses."

Smartphone Kill-Switch Bill Passes California Assembly
California lawmakers are about to make the state the second in the nation to approve a bill that would require all phones sold to have kill-switch software installed for owner-user safety.

The California bill would be the second state law in the country mandating a kill switch. The first was passed in Minnesota in May. There are also two bills in the U.S. Congress that are similarly seeking a mandated kill switch.

Vizio Recalls 245K HDTVs for Tip Over Safety Concerns
With the number of HDTVs Vizio has sold in the last year or so, it's a good bet that at least a good portion of you have bought one. A recall has been issued over 51 instances of the 39 and 42 inch sets tipping over.

Vizio is notifying owners, and has a website where they can check their set's serial number to see if it's affected before requesting the fix.

Chinese Government Denies It Banned Apple Purchases
Claims that the Chinese government blacklisted Apple from its list of approved companies to buy from are false according to the Chinese Procurement Center. If the reports had been accurate, Apple would have joined Microsoft, Symantec and Kaspersky on the government's list of banned trading companies. China holds that Apple never asked for approval to be considered for product purchases.

"Even though Apple has the certification for energy-saving products," the CGPC said, "it has never provided the necessary verification material and agreements according to the regulations."

Valve Quietly Releases Source 2 Engine
Valve didn't really release their new Source 2 engine, the whole thing was kind of clandestinely hustled out the back door under the cover of darkness. Valve still hasn't owned up to the release, but it's really hard to fool the faithful.

Beyond the game engine itself, this soft-launch of Source 2 also includes a brand new console called VConsole2, and a new version of the Hammer map/game editor.

AMD Set to Start Selling SSDs for Gamers
What was considered as just a rumor several months ago has been confirmed as a leak from an AMD educational website. The leak disclosed AMD's plans to release Radeon-branded R7 SSDs later on this year aimed directly at the gamer clientele.

AMD today confirmed the leak of the data and said it plans to make an official announcement about the drives next week.

This week Microsoft let it be known that the company will be dropping all support for aging versions of Internet Explorer beginning January 12, 2016.

Security Expert Calls Home Routers a Clear and Present Danger
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and in regards to the Internet, the weakest link is the home/small business router, according to a keynote address at the Black Hat conference.

The inexpensive Wi-Fi routers commonly used for home Internet access—which are rarely patched by their owners—are an easy target for hackers, Geer said, and could be used to construct a botnet that "could probably take down the Internet."
