TR BBQ XI: We're getting the hang of this
After 11 years of TR BBQs, DrFish and the rest of us have refined most of the key elements of the event beyond any reasonable expectation. TR head forum admin Just Brew It explained, "We're nerds; we take things to the extreme logical conclusion." At the time, he was—ahem—sterilizing hoses for connection to a couple of kegs of his own home-brewed beer. I knew his statement was truer than ever at about 10AM on the day of the BBQ, when a truck pulled up to unload an entire friggin' bouncy house for the kids:

Google testing experimental new UI for Chrome OS
Chrome OS might be in for a visual overhaul. Late last week, Google's François Beaufort posted the first public screenshot of Athena, which he describes as "a brand new project the Chromium OS team is experimenting with in order to bring a new kind of user experience." The screenshot, according to Beaufort, shows some "simple window management" in action.

Report: Shield tablet coming July 29 for $299
Rumors of an Nvidia Shield tablet have been swirling for months, and the device may be imminent. Convincing-looking slides posted by Videocardz indicate that the 8" tablet will be available starting July 29. According to those slides, the device will have a 1920x1200 IPS display, 2GB of RAM, and a Tegra K1 SoC with quad cores clocked up to 2.2GHz. The base 16GB configuration will reportedly sell for $299. That variant will be limited to Wi-Fi, but the 32GB version apparently has built-in LTE connectivity. Asking price: $399.

Friday night topic: Do you grow your own?
Our garden is filled with edible goodness this time of year. There's forest of lettuce comprised of at least four different varieties, plus kale, tomatoes, carrots, peas, beets, potatoes, raspberries, all sorts of different herbs, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. The spoils are always delicious; even a relatively mundane salad can deliver an explosion of flavor when the ingredients are picked minutes before serving. Nothing compares to that kind of freshness.

Deal of the week: A 4K monitor for $405
I feel a twinge of guilt for the headline. It's total click bait—but also accurate. Dell is selling its 28" Ultra HD monitor for only $404.99 after a $250 discount and coupon code ?WDVNK$9S8XMCX. (Thanks HardForum.) That sounds like an incredible deal, and it kind of is. However, there are a couple of crucial caveats. The panel is based on TN technology, and 4K output is limited to a 30Hz refresh rate. Eww. The custom reviews posted on Dell's site aren't terribly encouraging, either.
So, yeah, maybe consider one of ...

Lenovo kills 8'' Windows tablets in the U.S.
It's not a good time to be a small Windows tablet. Microsoft's Surface Mini never even entered production, and now, Lenovo is discontinuing its eight-inch ThinkPad and Miix2 tablets in the U.S.
In an email exchange with PCWorld , Lenovo confirmed the move and blamed "lack of interest" for the cessation of sales. Raymond Gorman, a Lenovo spokesperson, said that "in North America, we’re seeing stronger interest in the larger screen sizes for Windows tablets and are pleased with initial customer demand for the ...

Web fonts will soon look better in Chrome
For all of Google Chrome's advantages, its sub-par rendering of web fonts has always been a sore point. With the release of Chrome 37, however, that's about to change.
This post on the Chromium blog reveals that DirectWrite support is part of Chrome 37. DirectWrite is a DirectX application programming interface (API) that supports "high-quality text rendering, resolution-independent outline fonts, and full Unicode text and layout support," according to Microsoft's reference page . Previous versions of Chrome have ...

AMD has posted its financial results for Q2 2014. Revenue increased both sequentially and year-over-year, albeit slightly, to $1.44 billion. But the company remains in the red; it lost $36 million during the quarter, or $0.05 per share. Analysts had projected earnings of $0.03 cents per share, according to Yahoo Finance. Here's an easy-to-digest table with the results:
The brightest spot in the company's financials remains its Graphics and Visual Solutions division, which saw a 5% increase in sequential revenue and a 141% increase from the same quarter ...
