Oculus VR about to ship first DK2 dev kits
In March, Oculus started taking pre-orders for its new Rift development kit, the DK2. Today, the company announced that the first DK2 units are just about to ship. Here's part of the announcement from the official Oculus Developer Forums:
Some folks won't be getting their kits right away. Oculus says it has received more than 45,000 pre-orders in all, and it's "slightly behind in manufacturing." As a result, "some ...

Juno dev platform lays foundation for 64-bit Android on ARM
The folks at ARM have a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem that any creator of a new CPU instruction set is likely to face. How exactly do they enable the creation of ARMv8-compatible chips, devices, drivers, and software without any functioning hardware available for testing? More acutely, how do they make sure the transition to the 64-bit ARMv8 instruction set happens quickly enough to keep up with the crazy-short design cycles of today's tech gear?
The answer, it turns out, is for ARM to build its very own reference platform, complete with a six-core custom SoC. That platform is dubbed Juno, and ARM says it's just now becoming ...

Back in February, Sony sold its Vaio brand and associated operations to a private investment fund called Japan Industrial Partners. Today, JIP relaunched Vaio as a separate company and introduced two new laptops with it. Sadly, it doesn't appear that the new products will be sold outside of Japan.
The new Vaio Corporation is a small company, with only 240 employees. In a statement on its website  (Japanese PDF), the company promises to "inherit the Vaio DNA," which ...

If there's any truth to this rumor, I think GPU nomenclature standards are about to jump the shark. According to VR-Zone, AMD is on the verge of releasing a new GPU code-named Tonga—and the chip is expected to replace the Tahiti silicon inside AMD's Radeon R9 280 and R9 280X.
Yes, we may be about to witness the bizarro ...

Report: Surface Mini never entered production
You might have read recently about how the manual for the Surface Pro 3 manual includes inadvertent references to the oft-rumored Surface Mini. PC World reported on that slip-up last month, as did others. Does this mean the Surface Mini really is coming, after all?
No, according to DigiTimes . The site says that, although Microsoft finished development of the Surface Mini, production of that tablet "did not start as scheduled in May." ...
