Friday night topic: your worst tech purchase?
What was the biggest stinker, the worst bit of tech gear you ever foolishly parted with money to obtain?
Mine was a Quantum Bigfoot 5.25" hard drive, way back in the day. 3.5" drives were the norm at the time, but it was cheap and would fit into my case. The ...

Second-gen Samsung 3D NAND coming to premium SSDs
Last year, Samsung started producing 3D "V-NAND" that stacks layers of flash memory on top of each other. The three-dimensional flash was deployed in a server SSD last summer, but we haven't heard much about it since. Or we hadn't, anyway. Earlier this week, Samsung announced that it has begun producing second-generation V-NAND—and that the 3D flash is coming to high-end PCs.
The second-gen chips have 32 layers, eight more than the originals. They're built using "essentially the same equipment" as the first-gen stuff, but details are otherwise scarce. Samsung hasn't even revealed the density of the new V-NAND. The old chips weighed in at ...

4K for $649: Asus' PB287Q monitor reviewed
A couple of years ago, I got an energized, slightly crazy look in my eyes when folks in Korea started selling some truly gorgeous 27" IPS monitors on eBay for dirt cheap. Word spread quickly among PC enthusiasts about the visual glory that could be had for about 300 bucks. I promptly ordered one and did my part to spread to word about its crystal-clear, colorific virtues.
Little did we know back then that the sleepy world of PC displays was about to be awakened by a series of disruptive technologies. Since then, the first wave of 4K panels arrived based on a mind-shatteringly beautiful 31.5" panel—with an equally sanity-threatening $3,500 price tag ...

Seagate buys SandForce from LSI in $450 million deal
Seagate cut its teeth building mechanical hard drives, and it has thus far stayed on the fringes of the SSD scene. But not anymore. The company announced today that it has entered a "definitive asset purchase agreement" to obtain LSI's Flash Components Division and its Accelerated Solutions Division. The flash group includes SandForce, whose controllers are found in a wide range of SSDs, while the solutions group offers PCIe SSDs aimed at enterprise applications.
Semiconductor firm Avago Technologies bought LSI last year for $6.6 billion. It apparently wasn't all that interested in SSDs, because Seagate will ...

Dishonored meets Team Fortress in free-to-play BattleCry
Bethesda has revealed an intriguing entry in the free-to-play arena. Dubbed BattleCry, the class-based multiplayer action game will pit rival teams against each other in 32-player skirmishes. The PC title is in development at BattleCry Studios, which was formed in 2012 to tackle the project. The studio is helmed by BioWare Austin co-founder Rich Vogel, and Viktor Antonov of Dishonored fame is behind the art direction. Antonov's influence is certainly evident in the initial trailer:
