Happy 30th Birthday to Tetris
We have to address two things here concerning Tetris: One, the addictive game has just passed a 30 years milestone and two, Steve Wozniak totally owned it.

It was the first video game exported from the Soviet Union to the U.S., by way of Commodore 64. But it was in 1989, when it was included in the U.S. launch of Nintendo's Game Boy, that Tetris entered a generation's psyche.

Scientists Invent a Laser That Fires Electrical Charge, Not Light
From the "Now we're getting somewhere" file, researchers, quite by accident discovered how to 'shoot' an electrical charge instead of a beam of light. I don't know about you, but I'm pre-ordering my Phaser this week.

It promises to create a new class of lasers that use 250 times less energy than today's, and that's not even the craziest part.

We "Will Be Paying No Ransom," Vows Town
This is a bazaar bit of news involving a small New Hampshire town's police department computers: they are being held for ransom by Criptowall malware.

"Make no mistake, the Town of Durham will be paying no ransom," Town Manager Todd Selig was quoted as saying by CBS Boston news. Police department computers for the town of almost 15,000 residents were reportedly infected Thursday after an officer opened what appeared to be a legitimate file attachment to an e-mail.

Almost 50% of Americans Subscribe to a Streaming Service
In a new survey it was found that the percentage of Americans who subscribe to a streaming service like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu Plus by way of an Internet connected TV has doubled in the past four years.

At the same time, the number of cord cutters who also subscribe to Netflix is rising, from 16 percent in 2010 to 48 percent in 2014.

Why the New HealthCare.gov Website Is Going to Work This Time
It's a well-known fact that the original launch of the HealthCare.gov site was a total disaster from a programming standpoint and through steady work made the site at least usable. Now a new team of tech pros from some of the biggest tech corporations has been put in place that will guarantee a smooth second launch in November.

The Marketplace Light team fixed this by using something apparently in short supply during the original design of HealthCare.gov: common sense. "We just did the most basic simple thing that anybody would do," a team member says. "Make one page, and use the e-mail as the user name."

Microsoft's Latest Countdown: Update Windows 8.1 Before Tuesday
Okay all of you Windows XP users, wait, make that all 8.1 users, you have been warned: Upgrade of face the consequences. This is sounding all too familiar. Windows 8.1 users will have to upgrade prior to this month's Patch Tuesday before receiving any further security updates.

Before that, most customers with Windows 8.1-powered PCs or tablets must have applied April's Windows 8.1 Update. Anyone who does not will be unable to obtain patches through Windows Update

NSA-Proof Server Protonet Smashes Crowdfunding Record
Fallout from the NSA snooping scandal has had a beneficial effect on a German based startup, helping the company to raise over a Million dollars in about 89 minutes, breaking all previous records in croudfunding. The project called Protonet, is a server touted to be NSA-snoop proof.

German-based Protonet's funding target of €100,000 was surpassed within minutes of going live and it took just 89 minutes to receive $1m on German crowdfunding site Seedmatch.

Aereo Adds Support for Chromecast
Pending the verdict from the United States Supreme Court, Aereo has pre-emptively announced support for Chromecast, adding broadcasting channels to the array of Chromecast's cable and streaming services.

The company streams over-the-air TV broadcasts to its subscribers, using TV antenna-equipped data centers and leasing individual antennas out to subscribers

Sony Stops Shipping PSP: Farewell to a Landmark Handheld
What used to be an omnipresent time passer used largely by teens everywhere, Sony's venerable PSP will be no more as of the end of this year. At almost 10 years old, no one can claim that the PSP didn't have one of the best runs ever.

Now PSP is saying goodbye. Shipments to the US ended this year, and they are closing in Japan soon. European stores will see their last arrivals toward Christmas.

Sprint Agrees to Pay About $32 Billion to Buy T-Mobile
The deal was struck this week giving T-Mobile stockholders $40 a share for the company's stock. All that is left to do now is to call in the army of lawyers to work out the final details and get the merger passed by the FCC and Department of Justice.

Softbank Chairman Masayoshi Son has made no secret of his long-held desire to buy T-Mobile and merge it with Sprint, creating a carrier with the resources to upgrade its network and better compete with AT&T and Verizon.
