Netflix Could Be Classified As a 'Cybersecurity Threat'
Cybersecurity Information Protection Act of 2014 is written so broadly that a streaming service such as Netflix could, under the rules, be considered a cyber-threat. This would make it very legal for ISP's to slow down the streaming and eliminate the 'threat'. Another attempted end run around the already voted down CISPA bill.

A 'threat,' according to the bill, is anything that makes information unavailable or less available. So, high-bandwidth uses of some types of information make other types of information that go along the same pipe less available.

Benjamin F. Edwards Co. Discloses Data Breach
Another week, another reported security breach. This happened in late May to the Benjamin F. Edwards Co, a prestigious brokerage house, with customer data taken in a three day breach of security.

On June 27 Benjamin F. Edwards & Co. started sending out breach notification letters to their customers with the details on how they can go about signing up for their credit reporting.

Microsoft Ends 'Patch Tuesday' Email Alerts
Signed up to receive notifications in advance of releases for Patch Tuesdays? Come July 1st, you will have to muddle through like the rest of us and depend on RSS feeds and the advance notifications we issue here. Microsoft will end its email notifications next week.

Notice to IT professionals:
As of July 1, 2014, due to changing governmental policies concerning the issuance of automated electronic messaging, Microsoft is suspending the use of email notifications that announce the following:
* Security bulletin advance notifications
* Security bulletin summaries
* New security advisories and bulletins
* Major and minor revisions to security advisories and bulletins

Microsoft's Smartwatch Coming This October
Seeing how Microsoft is usually the last date to the dance, having an October unveiling would put Microsoft way ahead of its normal catch up from behind strategy. Microsoft's entry into the already crowded future smartwatch market is rumored to have some features not found in other brands.

It may be different from most of the smartwatches we have seen up till now. Rumor has it that the display would be on the underside of the band, and it may not even be that large, the device is said to be more along the lines of a fitness-band.

Destiny Closed Beta Coming in July
Bungie has confirmed Destiny will be going closed Beta on July 17th for PlayStation, which has been fairly well known for a while now, but now also confirms the Xbox Destiny Beta will go live sometime in late July. The game is due to be released on all platforms on September 9th.

Google's Eric Schmidt Makes a Secret Visit to Cuba
Without any fanfare, Eric Schmidt and a small contingency of former Google employees actually broke US law and made a trip down to Cuba. Schmidt and crew were reportedly outed by a Cuban blogger and were supposedly there to tour a university in Havana to learn more on the daily life of the Cubans.

And while we don't know the official reason for Schmidt's visit, it could have something to do with understanding the country's situation as well as how to increase uncensored Internet access to Cuban citizens without breaking the bank.

In light of Facebook's recent announcement to track its member's data for targeted ads, AdBlock Plus has stepped up its campaign to inform users that there is a solution to the data targeting.

The feature has been available since last summer, but the company is touting it now in light of the concerns over Facebook's latest announcement.

U.S. Navy Wants Humvee-Mounted Anti-Drone Lasers
Now they're talking. Let's get those anti-drone lasers hooked up and ready to fire from those light armored vehicles. Sounds like something out of a video game, but the US Navy is serious in its interest in mobile laser technology to take out enemy UAV's.

We can expect that our adversaries will increasingly use UAVs and our expeditionary forces must deal with that rising threat. GBAD gives the Marine Corps a capability to counter the UAV threat efficiently, sustainably and organically with austere expeditionary forces.

E-Voting Experiments End in Norway Amid Security Fears
After test trials of e-voting in Norway, the government has decided to end the experiment, not for voter fraud, but for the fear that how the voters cast their ballots would be made public. Also, the experiment did not increase the turnout of voters as was expected.

The statement said although there was "broad political desire" to let people vote via the net, the poor results from the last two experiments had convinced the government to stop spending money on more trials.

30% of U.S. Households Stuck in Dial-Up Hell
Are you in the miniority of the US still stuck with connection speeds less than 0.2 megabits per second? A report from the FCC found that in fact, 30% of all US households in the US are still below that threshold.

About 80 percent of households in the top 10 percent of earners have Internet connections faster than dial-up. For the households in the lowest 10 percent of income, 45 percent have connections faster than dial-up.

We all know that the really reliable rumors come from the supply chain, since they are the ones making the product. So the latest news on the Apple front is to expect the revamped iPhone 6 to be officially unveiled on September 19th.

If you are having trouble with your computer, chances are that you already know enough to diagnose it yourself. You might want to give a heads up to your non-technical friends to head toward the nearest Microsoft Store for a free in-house extended diagnostic.

On the plus side Microsoft says that they'll perform these free services for you regardless of where you bought your computer, whether you got your PC from Microsoft, or somewhere else
