Microsoft also made a bid on Twitch, but Twitch chose Google
When the news broke that Twitch was being acquired by YouTube - which is owned by Google - for $1 billion, it shocked most. But, did people really think that Twitch only had a single offer? No, no it did not.
TweakTown image microsoft_also_made_a_bid_on_twitch_but_twitch_chose_google
YouTube is having to fight against other interested parties, which includes Microsoft. Google and Twitch have agreed on the price, and are now reportedly working on the details of the deal, such as just how independent Twitch and its brand will be once it is fully acquired by YouTube. Twitch has reportedly looked at competing bids, but chose YouTube as it felt like the company was the best suited to its massive growth over the recent years.
Twitch has the aim of being the definitive platform for watching and streaming live video gaming, where it thinks Google can provide the means to get there.

New phishing scam targets Bank of America Merrill Lynch customers
Another day, another phishing scam targeting online banking users. This time around, cybercriminals are targeting Bank of America Merrill Lynch customers, tricking users to install malware designed to steal personal information. The scam email includes a PDF attachment which has a malware link that initiates a download of a "SecureMessage.zip" file - packaged with the Spyware/Win32.Zbot Trojan.
TweakTown image new_phishing_scam_targets_bank_of_america_merrill_lynch_customers
Similar to other phishing attacks, the "secure message" includes a zip file, and users open the attachment inside of a Web browser. Users end up clicking a Dropbox download link where the malware is installed - another stark reminder for Internet users to be careful when clicking links from unknown users.
One-third of phishing attacks are aimed at financial institutions, and because of the large amount of attacks, banks have to follow new guidelines to better defend against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Night Trap, the FMV video game from the Sega CD days is being remade
Some of you might remember FMV games, with it all really kicking off with Night Trap on the Sega CD all those years ago. Well, it looks like Night Trap might be coming back on modern platforms according to the full-motion video game pioneer, James Riley.
Riley says: "I do plan to re-release Night Trap and have been talking with a number of interested parties to do so. However, the specific platform(s) have not been confirmed (including online) and I will let you know once we have a definite plan and release schedule". He continued: "Night Trap will come back, in better resolution and game play than before, we just want to be sure it's the best strategy for all involved".
For those who don't remember Night Trap, it was an interactive B-movie that had players engaging in switches between multiple camera feeds in order to capture vampiric creatures that were stalking a slumber party. It had some very questionable content for the time, with the US Senate removing the game from store shelves temporarily, and then the introduction of a content ratings system for video games.

Crytek says that 8GB of RAM might not be enough for upcoming games
According to Crytek's US Engine Business Development Manager, Sean Tracy, the 8GB of RAM in the next-gen consoles isn't that much. Tracy has said that the 8GB of RAM in the Xbox One and PS4 isn't impressive.
TweakTown image crytek_says_that_8gb_of_ram_might_not_be_enough_for_upcoming_games
Tracy elaborated: "8 gigs can easily be filled up. But also keep in mind that developers don't necessarily even have access to all 8 gigs of it. For example the Xbox One retains some of the RAM for OS purposes". He continued, saying that the computational requirements of games will quickly hit the new 8GB ceiling, noting that his team has already struggled with the 8GB of RAM ceiling on Ryse: Son of Rome on the Xbox One.
"[8 GB of RAM] will be one of the limiting factors surely in this generation," added Tracy, he also added: "As hardware gets stronger the complexity of scenes can be increased and the dynamism within them. However, with that said it's not the raw power alone that will allow for photo-realistic graphics but technology that intelligently scales and utilizes all that the hardware has to offer".

Assassin's Creed Pirates now playable in Web browsers
Assassin's Creed Pirates is now available for play in Web browsers, with Microsoft and Ubisoft providing support for Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. To make it even better, the game runs full-screen and can be played using keyboard and mouse or touch interface. The game only works on desktop browsers and is a racing game instead of the regular shoot-em-up experience that the mobile versions provide.
The game was originally designed for Google Android and Apple iOS, and this is an interesting twist for PC-based gamers. In recent years, game studios are providing demos - or regular versions of games - available to play without installing the full-size game.
From the Microsoft: "Today, we're excited to announce a new partnership with Ubisoft to launch the first ever Assassin's Creed title on the modern web with HTML5, 3D WebGL graphics, and JavaScript. The Assassin's Creed Pirates web-based experience is available today for free play in five languages worldwide. New gameplay based on the popular iOS Assassin's Creed Pirates game allows you to step into the shoes of Alonzo Batilla, a young captain, racing his ship through the Caribbean seas, evading mines and other hurdles, amidst searching for treasure."

WhatsApp has pulled from Windows Phone Store
Today, WhatsApp's developers made the decision to pull the popular text messaging application from Microsoft's Windows Phone Store due to a major incompatibility with Windows Phone 8.1. The company says that the incompatibility was discovered during recent beta testing and proved to be detrimental to the apps functionality on Windows Phone 8.1.
TweakTown image whatsapp_has_pulled_from_windows_phone_store
With Windows Phone 8.1 releasing in just over a month, the developers have just a short time to remedy the issues and prep Facebook's largest messaging platform for release, or it will quickly be replaced by the myriad of other messaging apps that do work on Windows Phone 8.1. "Unfortunately due to technical issues, we have chosen to un-publish WhatsApp Messenger on the Windows Phone platform. We are working closely with Microsoft to resolve the issues and hope to return to the store shortly. We apologize to our users for the temporary inconvenience," said the WhatsApp development team in a statement.

Worms Battlegrounds is headed to Sony's PlayStation 4 next month
The Worms saga is one of those game series that has managed to hold on for more than a decade and still remain relevant to new generations of gamers. Today Team 17 Digital Ltd announced via Sony's official PlayStation blog that the series' latest installment, Worms Battlegrounds, will be heading to the PlayStation 4 on June 3rd of this year.
Worms Battlegrounds features a massive single player campaign spanning 25 story missions and 10 "Worm-Ops" time-attack missions, which have been set across five stunning environments (Inca, Viking, Feudal Japan and Industrial Revolution) with new day-to-night lighting transitions as well. All of these earn you community points, which allow your clan to level up and grow larger," said the blog post. "A particularly cool thing is that if we were in a clan together we could - for the first time - play controlling the same team! I'd take control of two of the worms, and so would you. Cisco sends letter to President Obama, criticizing NSA surveillance
Cisco CEO John Chambers has written a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to curtail spying by the National Security Agency (NSA), in an effort to rebuild bridges and stop eroding trust. Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden turned the security world upside down when he disclosed organized mass surveillance against U.S. and foreign citizens.

"We simply cannot operate this way, our customers trust us to be able to deliver to their doorsteps products that meet the highest standards of integrity and security," Chambers said in the letter.
Cisco believes Internet security is absolutely paramount, and wants to ensure its customers and users that nothing is being done to deceive its customers. In a previous company blog post, Mark Chandler, Cisco General Council, had this to say regarding the company's business practices, noting that Cisco does "not work with any government, including the United States government, to weaken our products. When we learn of a security vulnerability, we respond by validating it, informing our customers, and fixing it."

US Department of Justice charges Chinese army personnel for hacking
The U.S. Justice Department has filed charges against five members of the Chinese Army, saying they are responsible for launching cyberattacks to compromise American companies. This is a notable announcement, as it's the first time charges have been issued against foreign countries. Furthermore, industries targeted include nuclear, solar and steel companies, with hackers trying to give a competitive advantage to Chinese companies.

"The range of trade secrets and other sensitive business information stolen in this case is significant and demands an aggressive response," said Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General, during a press conference this morning. "Success in the global marketplace should be based solely on a company's ability to innovate and compete, not on a sponsor government's ability to spy and steal business secrets."
President Obama's administration has long accused the People's Liberation Army of launching cyberattacks targeting western companies, in an effort to steal intellectual property. Security experts are quick to point their fingers at China as the top foreign-based threat of organized cyberattacks against the United States.

ProtonMail, an 'NSA-proof' email service from Harvard and MIT students
If you're worried about someone snooping through your e-mail, you might want to take a look at ProtonMail. The new e-mail service is being heralded as being "NSA-proof," something that was created by a group of Harvard and MIT students.
TweakTown image protonmail_an_nsa_proof_e_mail_service_from_harvard_and_mit_students
ProtonMail was created by five founders, who all met at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. They were each looking for an e-mail service that was more secure than Lavabit, which is what NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was using until it disappeared. ProtonMail uses end-to-end encryption, with the founders using heavy user authentication measures. This, according to the founders, ensures that your data is inaccessible to the ProtonMail team, let alone a government or spy agency.
Andy Yen, one of ProtonMail's creators, spoke with Bostinno, where he said: "Even we don't have the ability to read that email. If we can't read it, we obviously can't turn it over to any government agencies". There's also a SnapChat-like feature built into ProtonMail, where users can program their e-mails to self-destruct once they have reached the recipient's inbox, or after a certain amount of time.

Amped Wireless REC15A Compact AC Wi-Fi Range Extender Review
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
With 802.11ac now flooding the market, the sheer amount of solutions is truly mind boggling. Users now have an unlimited amount of options when upgrading or setting up their very first home network. For those that have a large amount of space to cover, the run-of-the-mill wireless router may not be enough, and that is where range extenders fit the bill.
Today, we will be taking a look at one of the latest solutions from Amped Wireless, and as you know, we have seen the RTA15 and REA20 come through the lab here at TweakTown. It will certainly be interesting to see how well the REC15A fits into the market and lineup from Amped Wireless. The REC15A is a 500mW "High Power" wireless range extender with capabilities of 150Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 433Mbps on the 5GHz band.
MSRP for the Amped Wireless REC15A Range Extender is set at $99.99 with a one-year warranty.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
The scope of delivery for the REC15A includes the extender along with its dual-band antenna. We also found a good amount of reading materials in the box along with a setup disk.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Taking a look at the front edge of the extender, I noticed Amped included a wired Ethernet port. Upon further inspection, I found this port is a fast Ethernet port and is capable of 100Mbps.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
The top of the REC15A houses the antenna connection with the WPS button and reset on the opposing side.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
The back of the extender houses the plug along with the default SSID. It's worth noting that this extender is not secured by default like many solutions.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Above, we have entered the GUI of the extender. As you can see, Amped has laid everything out so that you can get an idea of what's going on with one glimpse.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Setting up the extender, we must first choose what network we would like to extend. In my case, it would be the Linksys WRT1900 network.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Next up, we enter the password for the wireless network and let the extender connect.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
After the extender connects, it will ask you what you would like to name your extended network.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Above, everything is setup and ready to go. As you can see, we have 86 percent signal from the 5GHz band and 92 percent from the 2.4GHz band.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Now we move to testing. On the 2.4GHz band, we connected at 73Mbps with our MacBook Pro. Starting right next to the range extender and moving out to a final distance of 40ft, I found the 2.4GHZ band to do quite well. At the furthest distance, the signal dropped to -50dBm but stayed at the same 73Mbps connection rate.
TweakTown image amped_wireless_rec15a_compact_ac_wi_fi_range_extender_review
Over on the 5GHz band, things were a little calmer; the MacBook Pro connected at 293Mbps. Right next to the extender, we have a -40dBm signal, and moving out from the base location, we find the extender keeping a good signal rate with the lowest signal at -68dBm.
As far as range extenders are concerned, the Amped Wireless REC15A is one of the more complete units I have seen come through. While I haven't been able to get my hands-on everything in the market, I would say the REC15A is just as good as, and maybe better than, the REA20 from Amped Wireless…that is if you don't need the extra gigabit ports and top-tier speed from your extender. If you do, then you may want to look into a full solution rather than a compact unit such as this.
The build quality of the REC15A is quite good; plastics are secure and don't feel flimsy, and the firmware on this unit was solid with no hiccups like we experienced with the REA20.
Performance of the REC15A was as advertised. I was successfully able to maneuver through testing without losing a signal, and even more, I feel that I could have went out further from the standard 40ft that I stop at during testing. In addition to the wireless extending capabilities of the REC15A, the unit does also offer a single fast Ethernet port if you want to extend and then plug in the extender to a PC or maybe a switch.
MSRP of the Amped Wireless REC15A is set at $99.99 with a one-year warranty. Current market pricing can be found below.
PRICING: You can find the Amped Wireless REC15A for sale below. The prices listed are valid at the time of writing but can change at any time. Click the link to see the very latest pricing for the best deal.
United States: The Amped Wireless REC15A retails for $99.99 at Amazon.
Canada: The Amped Wireless REC15A retails for CDN$145.44 at Amazon Canada.
