AMD to Launch New Single-GPU Card This Summer, to Take on GTX 780 Ti
AMD is reportedly working on a new single-GPU graphics card SKU to compete with the likes of GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and perhaps even take a swing at the GTX TITAN Black, since it's not too far ahead of the GTX 780 Ti at single-display gaming. The new SKU will be more than just a clock-speed bump, it will leverage HBM (high-bandwidth memory), a cutting-edge new technology that relies on stacking multiple DRAM dies with dedicated memory paths into a single package, cutting down on energy, thermals, and PCB real-estate.

The first kind of HBMs to hit the market are 4Hi, which will offer memory bandwidths of up to 128 GB/s over a single package. With four such packages on a card (over the 512-bit interface of "Hawaii,") don't be surprised if the card will feature memory bandwidths as high as 512 GB/s. Memory bandwidth is not the prime-mover in VGA performance, and AMD will have offer higher GPU clocks for the card to stand a chance against NVIDIA's high-end single-GPU offerings. As for the name this card would bear, we get a sense of deja vu about how NVIDIA launched the single-GPU GeForce 7950 GTX alongside the dual-GPU 7950 GX2, replacing the 7900 GTX. And so, it wouldn't surprise us if AMD named it Radeon R9 295X.

Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh Processors Now Available
Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh processors are now officially available. Built in the LGA1150 package and compatible with motherboards running 8-series chipset with BIOS updates, the chips are accompanied by an armada of motherboards based on the latest 9-series chipset, which support the chips out of the box. The chips offer speed-bumps over Intel's existing Core "Haswell" lineup, at existing price-points, and feature some under the hood package improvements that needn't translate into IPC improvements.

Among the chips launched today, are the Core i7-4790, featuring a clock speed of 3.60 GHz, with Turbo Boost frequency of 4.00 GHz, 8 MB of L3 cache, and HyperThreading. This chip is priced at US $319.99, between the i7-4770 and the i7-4770K. Also launched is the Core i5-4690, featuring clocks of 3.30 GHz with 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost, 6 MB of L3 cache, and lacking HyperThreading. This one goes for US $224. The two lack upwards unlocked base-clock multipliers, and so the overclockers among you may want to hold out till mid-June, when Intel launches overclocker-friendly chips, codenamed "Devil's Canyon," based on this silicon. Other chips launched today include the Core i5-4590 (quad-core, 3.20 GHz / 3.70 GHz, 6 MB L3, $199.99); i5-4460 (quad-core, 3.20 GHz / 3.70 GHz, 6 MB L3, $189); i7-4790S (quad-core, 3.20 GHz, 8 MB L3, HTT, $314, low TDP); i5-4690S (quad-core, 3.20 GHz, 6 MB L3, $224); and i5-4590S (quad-core, 3.00 GHz, 6 MB L3, $199).

EKWB Unveils EK-FC R9-295X2 for Radeon R9 295X2
EK Water Blocks unveiled the first pictures of its full-coverage water block for AMD Radeon R9 295X2. It takes a meaty block to cool the 500-Watt dual-GPU monstrosity, which is also the fastest graphics card money can buy. The EK-FC R9-295X2 from EK is one of the few full-cover blocks that feature coolant channels that actually span the entire obverse length of the card. The channel is designed in a way that coolant is distributed uniformly to both the GPU systems, their neighboring memory, and the central portion of the card, housing its feisty VRM and PCIe bridge chip. The block comes in two variants, one with clear acrylic top over the two GPUs, with an aluminum central top; and one with opaque acetal top instead of clear acrylic. The two blocks come in two further variants, clear copper and nickel-plated copper block material. To top it all off, EK appears to either be bundling, or separately selling a single-slot expansion bracket for the card (a carryover from its HD 7990 block).
