Friday night topic: What's wrong with your computer?
I'm pretty much the plumber with a leaky sink when it comes to my own PC. I kind of suspect some of you all may be the same way. I have a ton of test rigs that I maintain in tip-top shape for work, and I help my family keep their PCs working well. My now-somewhat-upgraded version of Damagebox 2011, though, suffers from a few issues.
On the hardware side, the cooling still isn't entirely optimal; the IOH temperatures are about 20°C higher than the ambient motherboard, and they rise into dangerous territory sometimes. Software-wise, the Windows 8.1 file explorer occasionally crashes for no apparent reason. I think it might be ...

Control time with movement in this Superhot FPS
PC gamers often complain about the lack of gameplay innovation in first-person shooters. And they have a case, because far too many titles rely tired old formulas. But not Superhot, whose internal clock is tied directly to player movement. Time only advances when the player is moving. When they're still, the game essentially sits in suspended animation, allowing players to plan their next move carefully.

Far Cry 4 coming on November 18 for Windows, consoles
Wow. I must have been asleep at the switch, because I had no idea there was another Far Cry game so close to release. Apparently there is, though. Ubisoft announced yesterday that Far Cry 4 will be out on in November for Windows PCs along with the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Those of us in North America will get the game on November 18, while our friends across the pond will have to wait until the 20th.

MSI's Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard reviewed
Despite the overall downturn in the PC industry, all indications suggest the gaming segment of the market is growing. Motherboard makers have been increasingly eager to cash in on that trend, and MSI may be most aggressive among them. The company rolled out a deep lineup of so-called gaming boards last year, democratizing a style that had been largely limited to high-end offerings with premium prices.
If you're unfamiliar with this particular sub-genre, here's the lowdown. Gaming-specific boards typically involve subtle tweaks to the tried-and-true enthusiast formula. They usually have different ...

FCC Commission approves 'fast lane' rule proposal
The FCC Commission has voted on those net neutrality rules we heard about last month. As Reuters reports, the Commission voted 3-2 in favor of formally proposing the rules and starting to collect "public comment."
Under the new rules, Internet service providers would be allowed to prioritize traffic along so-called "fast lanes." Third-party, bandwidth-intensive services like Netflix would have to pay up to get access to those lanes. ...

Nvidia's Tegra K1 SoC appears in 7.9'' Xiaomi tablet
Nvidia revealed its next-gen Tegra K1 SoC at CES in January. The chip will come in two flavors, both of which feature DirectX 11-class graphics based on the Kepler GPU architecture. One variant has proprietary "Denver" cores compatible with the 64-bit ARMv8 instruction set, while the other uses off-the-shelf ARM Coretex-A15 cores familiar from the Tegra 4. The A15 version is expected to arrive first, and Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi just introduced a tablet based on it. Check out the MiPad, which looks like the mutant offspring of the iPhone 5C and second-gen iPad Mini:

Toshiba and SanDisk partner on new fab for 3D NAND
Last summer, Samsung kicked off mass production of three-dimensional NAND that layers memory cells vertically. It's not the only one working on stacked NAND structures, though. Toshiba and SanDisk are collaborating on 3D tech of their own, and the duo is building an entirely new facility to handle fabrication.
The new building will actually replace an existing one. Toshiba's Fab 2 facility in Mie prefecture, Japan, is being torn down to make way for a plant geared toward 3D NAND production. Demolition of the old fab will begin this month, ...

Nvidia might have a Shield tablet on the way
Remember that 8" Mocha tablet we told you about last week? Well, it might be more than a simple successor to the Tegra Note.
According to Fudzilla, which claims to have gotten "fresh information about Nvidia's Tegra plans," Nvidia is developing a Shield tablet. The device will be based on the Tegra K1 processor, Fudzilla says, and ...
