More light bulbs? Yep, more light bulbs
The Internet is a strange and wonderful place. A couple of months ago, I posted a Friday night topic on light bulbs that incited a fair amount of discussion. Not long after that, I kid you not, I started receiving press releases and phone calls from the world's light-bulb brands, as if it made perfect sense for a website with the tagline "PC hardware explored" to be writing about LEDs versus CFLs.
This is ...

iOS 8 may add Win8-style split-screen multitasking
Apple rarely shies away from copying good ideas. One of the most recent examples is iOS's notification center, which behaves an awful lot like Android's notifications panel. Now, according to 9to5Mac, Apple may be about to nab another feature from a competitor: split-screen multitasking.
The site quotes "sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development" as saying that iOS will introduce a split-screen multitasking feature. ...

Join us on July 19 for TR BBQ 2014
The eleventh annual TR BBQ is coming soon! The date is a little earlier than usual this year, on July 19, and I'm hoping that means even more TR readers and forum-dwellers will be able to attend.
For the uninitiated, the BBQ venue is Dr. Fish's lake house in Holland, Michigan, on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. The BBQ has grown over the years into an epic, day-long event that features some truly excellent barbecued pork ribs, a cornhole tournament, a PC ...

GeForce Titan Z review leaks, card coming in Q2
Where in the world is Nvidia's Titan Z graphics card? The dual-GK110 monster was revealed in March, but we haven't heard much about it since—at least not officially. Rumors abound that the card is delayed or possibly even canceled altogether. The reason? The $2,999 Titan Z is apparently slower than AMD's dual-Hawaii Radeon R9 295 X2, which sells for a mere $1,500.
As it turns out, there's some evidence to support that claim. A member of the Linus Tech Tips forums has posted images from a review of the Titan Z published by Hong Kong computer magazine E-Zone. My browser's translation engine can't make any sense of the ...

Report: NSA sticks backdoor tools in routers
Ready for another juicy NSA spying revelation? All right, here goes. According to the latest report by The Guardian, the National Security Agency implants backdoor tools in routers exported from the United States. The NSA then uses those tools to conduct network surveillance.
The agency then implants backdoor surveillance tools, repackages the devices with a factory seal and sends them on. The NSA thus ...

Next-gen NAND fuels 1TB SanDisk X300s SSD
There's another terabyte SSD in town. SanDisk's new X300s runs the gamut from 64GB all the way up to 1TB. It's based on the second generation of 19-nm MLC NAND developed by SanDisk's joint flash fabrication venture with Toshiba. This "1Y" NAND shortens the cell size from 19 x 26 nm to 19 x 19.5 nm, delivering a 25% reduction in area—not bad for an incremental shrink.
Although the X300s addresses the bulk of its flash with two bits per cell, a small slice is treated as single-bit SLC NAND. This portion of the flash is devoted to nCache, ...
