Adaptive-Sync added to DisplayPort spec
PC
gaming animation may soon become more fluid than ever, thanks to a
development just announced by the folks at the VESA display standards
organization. VESA has officially added a feature called Adaptive-Sync
to the DisplayPort 1.2a specification, which means that a G-Sync-style adaptive refresh mechanism could be built into nearly every new desktop monitor in the coming months and years.

Half-Life 2 and Portal now available for Nvidia's Shield
My guess was correct, which I realize isn't saying much. Still, I was surprised this morning to learn that both Half-Life 2 and Portal are already available for Nvidia's game-controller-plus-Tegra-and-screen thingy, otherwise known as Shield.
Half-Life 2 will set you back $9.99 in the Play store, and I'm not sure what to do now. The Shield's ability to stream games from a remote PC ...

Leaked slide: Devil's Canyon bringing 500MHz boost
Intel's first batch of Haswell Refresh CPUs isn't terribly exciting, but more interesting chips based on Devil's Canyon are just around the corner. These processors will feature an upgraded thermal interface material optimized for overclocking. According to specifications leaked on Chinese forum Coolaler, they'll also be a fair bit faster than existing Haswell CPUs—well, one of them will, anyway. Here's how the new K-series chipset reportedly line up against their predecessors:
Although the Core i5-4670K represents little more than a 100MHz speed bump over its predecessor, the i7-4790K should be quite a bit faster. Its core and ...

Chrome OS may get remote lock, wipe feature

But what happens if your Chrome OS machine gets stolen? According to a Google+ post by Google staffer François Beaufort, the operating system may be about to get a smartphone-style remote lock and wipe feature.
Beaufort says the Chromium OS team is "thinking about" adding the feature, and users can already see the first signs of its existence in the latest development build. "To see it," writes Beaufort, "you'll ...

HDD study finds little correlation between temperatures and failure rates
Online backup provider Backblaze has over 100 petabytes of storage spread across more than 34,000 hard drives. The company has shared some interesting reliability data based on those drives, including manufacturer-specific failure rates. Today, it published new information examining the correlation between failure rates and drive temperatures. In short, there isn't much of one—at least not with most of the drives in Backblaze's environment.
Backblaze's data center is loaded with storage pods that house 45 drives each. These pods are generally populated with the same kinds of drives, and the cooling appears to be ...
