AT&T To Buy DirecTV For $50B
AT&T is digging deep in the ol' couch cushions to buy DirecTV.

AT&T could close a deal to buy DirecTV for roughly $50 billion in as little as two weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The purchase would allow AT&T to expand its television footprint in the US, an attractive move for the telecommunications company, who, like its competitors, continues to compete with cable companies for customers who want bundled services for TV, broadband, wireless and home phone.

A Hacker Slumber Party For Girls
Oh come on, this sounds like it is totally made up, doesn't it? Everyone knows girls don't use computers.

The women were visiting the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to participate in Pearl Hacks, a 24-hour hackathon aimed at "building, encouraging and inspiring a community of young female programmers." More than 200 college students, from North Carolina, California, Illinois, New York, Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina, as well as high school women from across North Carolina, gave their weekend—and their sleep—to play with code.

European Regulators Going After Google Again
According to Bloomberg, Google is having another run-in with European regulators. This time around it seems lawmakers aren't happy about the way Google shares your info between its various services.

"By compiling data from its different services under a single user ID, Google has access to an in-depth personal profile of its users," Caspar said by phone, adding Google could face fines if it doesn't change its practices. "Google has to respect its users' right of self-determination."

You Can Now Mute People On Twitter

Twitter just got a little bit more passive-aggressive. On Monday afternoon, Twitter announced that it's rolling out a "mute" feature. The update will allow you to temporarily eliminate a person from your feed so that you will no longer see her tweets in your timeline or receive push or SMS notifications from her on your phone.

Does Facebook Affect Our Self-Esteem?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, if your well-being is affected because you are being ignored on Facebook, the problem isn't Facebook.

New research published in the journal Social Influence looked at how Facebook communication impacts on feelings of social belonging which in turn affects outlook on life; loneliness and self-worth. Researchers, led by Dr Stephanie Tobin from The University of Queensland's School of Psychology, conducted two studies centered on 'lurking' or passive Facebook participation and on ostracism, aiming to analyze how participants would feel when deliberately 'snubbed'.

Windows 8.1 Update Deadline Pushed Back
Good news for those of you that still haven't installed the Windows 8.1 update, you have another month to procrastinate.

Instead of requiring Windows 8.1 users to install the update by May 13, which is this month's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft is now allowing them a longer grace period -- until June 10 -- to move to the Update in order to continue to receive patches and fixes from the company. Microsoft announced the Windows 8.1 Update deadline extension on May 12.
