Friday night topic: Web-comic serials
I believe we've had a Friday night topic at some point in the past about web comics, but that discussion was mostly about day-to-day strips like Penny Arcade and PvP. Tonight, I'd like to talk about another form of comic that's flourished online: the serial comic that tells an involved story in extended form. The best examples I can come up with off the top of my head are:
There's a ton of entertainment to be had via that short list of links. ...

Final Catalyst 14.4 graphics driver out
You know that Catalyst 14.4 release candidate AMD posted on Monday? Well, the final, WHQL-certified version of that graphics driver is now out. I'll spare you a cut-and-paste of the release notes, because they're identical. We're in for the same CrossFire and Mantle tweaks (plus OpenGL 4.4 support) as earlier this week.
Download links are here for 64-bit versions ...

The next Kansas City TR meet-up is coming on May 3
Ok, folks. If you're in or near the Kansas City metro area, you should plan to join us at the end of next week, on Saturday, May 3, for another TR meet-up. Like last time, we'll be gathering at The Peanut in Lee's Summit. We'll get started at 8PM and hang out until, uh, whenever.
As always, I'll try to cart in some leftover test hardware from Damage Labs ...

Microsoft pleases Wall Street with earnings, closes Nokia deal
Last quarter was a good one for Microsoft. The company posted its earnings after the bell yesterday, reporting revenue growth "across segments" and, according to Reuters, beating Wall Street's estimates. After-hours trading brought the company's stock price to "levels not seen since the turn-of-the-century Internet stock boom," Reuters says.
Here are the numbers for Microsoft as a whole. For reference, the results ...

New FCC rules would allow paid traffic prioritization
New rules being drafted by the FCC will reportedly allow ISPs to establish so-called Internet fast lanes that prioritize traffic for select services. ISPs would have to be transparent about how they treat traffic, the New York Times says, and fast lanes would need to be implemented "in a commercially reasonable manner."
Net neutrality proponents oppose allowing broadband providers to give preferential treatment to certain kinds of traffic. There are numerous arguments against the practice, and as it turns out, many of them have been made by the FCC itself. Ars Technica illustrates how the government agency's Open Internet Order from 2010 seems to directly contradict the rules being proposed. That document warns that permitting ...

According to this video by GameSpot, the folks behind the Dark Souls series ...

Evolve trailer highlights unique, asymmetrical gameplay
Evolve is an upcoming multiplayer game from the folks behind the original Left 4 Dead. Like the zombie FPS, it puts four players on the same team. And that's pretty much where the similarities end. Instead of targeting hordes of the undead, players are tasked with hunting a single, powerful beast. That monster is controlled by a fifth player, providing an interesting twist to traditional shooter gameplay.
Speaking of twists, the latest trailer shows a bunch of in-game footage from the perspective of not only the beast, but ...

Single-core Bay Trail SoC powers fanless NUC
Intel has finally introduced a fanless version of its NUC small-form-factor system. The mini PC features an Atom SoC based on Bay Trail. Unfortunately, it uses a neutered version of the silicon that's limited to a single core clocked at 1.46GHz. Most of the Bay Trail tablets I've seen offer more horsepower—and they squeeze into much slimmer chassis.

A first look at Gigabyte's next-gen Intel motherboards
Brace yourself, because a batch of new motherboards based on Intel's next-gen chipsets is just around the corner. Gigabyte is prepping no fewer than 37 different models, almost all of which will be available stateside. I got a closer look at a bunch of them at a press event earlier this week. I can't divulge certain details just yet, but I can tell you about some motherboard-specific features. And I can show you pictures—lots of pictures.
The new boards are split into four families, each with a different focus. There are the standard versions, of course, plus gaming-specific mobos, SOC variants optimized for hardcore overclockers, and a whole new line ...
