99 Percent of Ads on Piracy Sites are Considered 'High Risk'
These are the news stories you live for, pulled directly from Captain Obvious' own personal 'Duh' files. Researchers at an Australian university found that after analyzing advertisements on less-than-legit websites, their ads were less-than-legit also usually containing malware, misdirects and complete scams. We reiterate: Duh!

As defined in the study, "high risk" categories are pornography-based (sometimes child), malware or complete scam and fraud sites.

Hacker Weev Gets Sentence Thrown Out
What's a fellow have to do around this joint to get convicted and stay convicted of computer related crimes? Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer, the infamous iPad hacker was released from prison and his sentence vacated this week due to a technicality over his trials' venue.

The court ruled that this was an improper venue, and vacated the sentence. Technically, the feds could still charge him for the crimes in another state, but at this point it's unclear if they will.

Israeli Hacker Reportedly Exposes 'Anonymous' Members
Israelis have a reputation for not tolerating much in the way of attacks on the country, cyber attacks included. A group of hackers who were responsible for attacks on Israeli websites were in-turn hacked and their personal information published on the Internet.

"April 2014 will be a month to remember for the Israeli defense forces and internet security forces," Anonymous said in a video release a month before the attack. "We will strike any and all websites that we deem to be in Israeli Cyberspace in retaliation for the mistreating of people in Gaza and other areas."

You Thought 4K TV Looked Real? This One Goes to 8K
This could be the case for 'if you build it, they will come' Japan's NHK is hoping for just that if they ever get their 8K super-high-def televisions into production mode. The 8K screens were being shown off this week at the NAB show in Las Vegas.

There's precious little content for it outside some 4K-mastered Blu-rays from Sony and a specialty YouTube channel, but more stuff to watch will arrive soon enough, just as it did with 1080pi.

IRS Misses XP Deadline, Pays Microsoft Millions for Patches
The one government agency you would certainly expect to know the importance of meeting a deadline would be the Internal Revenue Service. Obviously, someone in the department didn't get the memo that XP was going south. Your tax dollars at work.

Using that average -- and the number of PCs the IRS admitted were still running XP -- the IRS would pay Microsoft $11.6 million for one year of Custom Support.

Amazon Offers Employees $5,000 to Quit
Amazon is looking for a few good men….to quit the company. A new program introduced this week will offer employees up to $5K to quit their jobs. The program was initially instituted by Zappos, a company purchased by Amazon back in 2009.

UPS Saves 10 Million Gallons of Fuel by Only Turning Right
In the case of UPS saving over 10 million gallons of fuel, the company does it by doing the right thing. The right thing in UPS' case is avoiding making left turns in delivering packages.

The algorithms that UPS uses to map out routes is much more refined now than it was in the early days. And yes, sometimes UPS drivers do turn left. It usually only happens in residential neighborhoods where there's very little traffic.

With all of the talk and worry over the Heartbleed vulnerability, many are looking for ways to protect themselves and their information from exposure. Now knowing which sites you visit are infected is as easy as installing a simple Chrome plugin.

Developer Jamie Hoyle has created a nice Chrome extension dubbed Chromebleed that serves a single purpose: It displays a warning when you visit a website affected by Heartbleed.

Dyn to Shut Down No-Cost Dynamic DNS Next Month
It's been a good long 15 year ride, but all good things have to come to an end sooner or later. Those of you who have been depending on the free DNS service from Dyn will finally have to cough up some bucks to continue on their paid service come May 7th. Thanks to forum subscriber Boss99 for the linkage.

Early in its history, Dyn told its users that anyone who "donated" a small fee would gain access to the DynDNS service "for life." Apparently that promise still holds.

AT&T May Beat Google Fiber to the Punch in NC
You just gotta' love Google for their fiber optic endeavors all over the US. Even the merest mention of bringing the mega-fast Google Fiber to an area makes the competition cringe and spring into action.

Google said earlier this year that it's also considering expanding its Google Fiber network to the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area in North Carolina, which means that lucky residents in those cities could conceivably have a choice between two different ISPs that offer 1Gbps Internet service.
