Biostar, Gigabyte tout support for new Haswell chips
Well, folks, I guess Haswell Refresh really may be just around the corner. To top off that e-tail leak we wrote about earlier this morning, both Gigabyte and Biostar have put out press releases pledging support for the new CPUs—albeit without delving too deeply into specifics.
Gigabyte says its "entire range" of 8-series motherboards will support "soon to launch 4th Gen Intel® Core™ Processors and select unlocked 4th Gen Intel® Core™ Processors." ...

Friday night topic: Couch computing
My brother just called me sounding a little desperate. He's an outdoorsy type, not a big computer user, but he left his iPad 2 on an airplane this afternoon. The airline told him that returning it to him will take months, if they are able to find it. He's out a tablet, basically, and he is in no way willing to go without one for that long.
I can relate. I'm glued to my Nexus 7 for way too many hours when I'm not working, whether it's reading books, playing Kingdom Rush ...

Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange loses almost $500 million, files for bankruptcy
Mt. Gox was once the busiest Bitcoin exchange in the business. But the site, which began as a trading service for Magic: The Gathering cards, has had a rough month. On February 7, it halted all Bitcoin withdrawls. A problem with "transaction malleability" was blamed, and things went downhill from there. In the following weeks, Mt. Gox moved offices, deleted Twitter posts, and took its entire website offline. (Thanks Wikipedia!) A leaked Crisis Strategy Draft suggested that the exchange had lost nearly 750,000 Bitcoins. The document named "massive robbery and poor Bitcoin accounting" as additional problems, and it suggested that Mt. Gox would shut down and rebrand itself.
Today, the other shoe dropped. Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan, its home country. According to the Wall Street Journal , the exchange confirmed that it ...

Report: Microsoft considering a free version of Win8.1
Would you upgrade to Windows 8.1 if it were free? PC users may get the chance with a special, Bing-infused version of the operating system. According to stories at ZDNet and The Verge, Microsoft is experimenting with "Windows 8.1 with Bing," a slightly tweaked version of its latest operating system that would be a "free or low cost" upgrade for Windows 7 users. It's unclear precisely how this version of the OS differs from the standard one, but Microsoft will reportedly rely on Bing and its associated apps—News, Weather, Health & Fitness, and so on—to generate revenue.
Windows 8 already comes loaded with a bunch of Bing apps on the Start screen, so it's hard to imagine those being featured more prominently. I don't see any ...

Windows 8.1 Enterprise to become available to everyone
Microsoft is gearing up for a slight tweak to its OS lineup. According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, the company plans to make Windows 8.1 Enterprise available to "anyone willing to pay for it." That edition is currently offered only to volume licensing customers, which pretty much rules out folks with home PCs.
As Paul Thurrott points out , since there's no Ultimate edition of Windows 8.1, some of the Enterprise edition's features are currently unavailable to the general public. Among the ...

AMD supports potential DirectX update, will outline Mantle's future at GDC
We reported yesterday about some recently posted session abstracts for the upcoming Game Developers Conference. The session descriptions hint very strongly that an update to Microsoft's DirectX is in the works—and that the focus of the update will be lowering CPU overhead and offering "closer to the metal" control over graphics hardware. Not only that, but Intel, Nvidia, and AMD will be presenting a session on "zero driver overhead" programming techniques for OpenGL, as well.
Those goals sound an awful lot like the impetus behind AMD's Mantle API , which raises the question of Mantle's future, now that the rest of the industry is pursuing ...

Intel's 730 Series solid-state drive reviewed
Intel's X25-M solid-state drive was a special piece of hardware back in the day. The SSD market was still in its infancy, and the X25-M represented the chip-maker's initial entry into an exciting new arena. It was a pretty good first offering, too. The drive had wicked-fast performance, and it was reasonably affordable for its day. Intel's chip-making prowess, combined with its expertise in designing storage and memory controllers, seemed perfectly suited to tackling solid-state storage.
The X25-M's flash controller anchored three generations of desktop SSDs before it was finally retired. Instead of using another in-house chip, Intel started ...
