Texting Could "Lower Life Expectancy'
If this story is true, the average teenager should have died 42.5 years ago.

Texting and using mobile devices for long periods of time could lead to lower life expectancy, doctors have warned. The forward-leaning posture that many people adopt when texting, going online, sending emails or playing games on phones and other mobile devices increases the risk of an early death in elderly people, and there are fears that younger people could also be knocking time off their lives.

Google Takedown Notices Surge 711,887% In 4 Years
This number is so insane, I can't even get my head around it. Saying the number out loud just makes it worse.

A new paper published in the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology shows that the number of DMCA notices received by Google increased 711,887 percent in four years. The increase can be credited to a few copyright holders and industry groups such as the RIAA, who started an avalanche of takedown requests after the SOPA and PIPA bills died in Congress.

Facebook Buying Oculus VR For $2 Billion
Is it April Fool's Day already? Haha, Mark you got us. Good one. Now quit kidding around.

I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire Oculus VR, the leader in virtual reality technology. Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences.

Everyone Hates Their Internet Service Providers
Do you hate your internet service provider? Don't feel bad, according to this poll, pretty much everyone does.

The survey reached over 80,000 participants, and a huge percentage of those respondents had something unpleasant to say about their providers. The highest-ranking providers only manage to look good in comparison to the competition, Consumer Reports found: "Even WOW and Verizon FiOS, which got high marks for service satisfaction, rated middling or lower for value, and out of 14 providers, nine got the lowest possible value rating."

IRS: Bitcoin Is Property Not Currency in Tax System
Good news! The IRS has deemed bitcoins are taxable property! Wait, that's no good news.

Today's IRS guidance will provide certainty for Bitcoin investors, along with potential income-tax liability that wasn't specified before. Purchasing a $2 cup of coffee with Bitcoins bought for $1 would trigger $1 in capital gains for the coffee drinker and $2 of income for the coffee shop.

Phanteks PH-F140 Case Fan
If you need a new 140mm case fan or two, the fellas over at OCC say the Phanteks PH-F140 is a solid choice.

Based on the specifications given by Phanteks, the fans seemed to be just as awesome as they were said to be. The idles and the loads both were very impressive across the board and all @4.4Ghz. Even with the XP using the QSA adapter the temperatures were all so far down I wouldn't even be afraid to up the voltage and the clock speed for a faster overclock.

The Failure Fetish in Silicon Valley
Only in Silicon Valley could failure be considered a bragging right.

The tech industry used to bury its dead quietly. For years, cash-starved companies sold themselves for peanuts in order to save face; friends bailed each other out with 11th-hour "acqui-hires," and founders came up with euphemisms like "pivot" to soften the sting of defeat. But these days, start-up flameouts are increasingly serving as badges of honor, and stories like Abrams's are being told at higher and higher volume. In an industry known for sunny optimism, Silicon Valley has managed to turn failure into a bragging right.

NVIDIA Introduces The GeForce GTX TITAN Z
Continuing the TITAN legacy of supercomputer-inspired performance, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled the GeForce GTX TITAN Z today at our annual GPU Technology Conference. Built around two Kepler GPUs and 12GB of dedicated frame buffer memory, TITAN Z is engineered for next-generation 5K and multi-monitor gaming. With two GK110 chips, TITAN Z is powered by a total of 5,760 processing cores, or 2,880 cores per GPU. "If you're in desperate need of a supercomputer that you need to fit under your desk, we have just the card for you," Jen-Hsun said.

Unlike traditional dual-GPU cards, Titan Z's twin GPUs are tuned to run at the same clock speed, and with dynamic power balancing. So neither GPU creates a performance bottleneck. And that performance is delivered in a card that is cool and quiet, rather than hot and loud. Low-profile components and ducted baseplate channels minimize turbulence and improves acoustic quality.

NVIDIA Updates GPU Roadmap; Announces Pascal
During a keynote speech at our annual GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, Calif., NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang updated our public GPU roadmap with the announcement of Pascal, the GPU family that will follow this year's Maxwell GPUs. Named for 17th century French mathematician Blaise Pascal, our next-generation family of GPUs will include three key new features: stacked DRAM, unified memory and NVLink.

3D Memory: Stacks DRAM chips into dense modules with wide interfaces, and brings them inside the same package as the GPU. This lets GPUs get data from memory more quickly – boosting throughput and efficiency – allowing us to build more compact GPUs that put more power into smaller devices. The result: several times greater bandwidth, more than twice the memory capacity and quadrupled energy efficiency.
Unified Memory: This will make building applications that take advantage of what both GPUs and CPUs can do quicker and easier by allowing the CPU to access the GPU's memory, and the GPU to access the CPU's memory, so developers don't have to allocate resources between the two.
NVLink: Today's computers are constrained by the speed at which data can move between the CPU and GPU. NVLink puts a fatter pipe between the CPU and GPU, allowing data to flow at more than 80GB per second, compared to the 16GB per second available now.
Pascal Module: NVIDIA has designed a module to house Pascal GPUs with NVLink. At one-third the size of the standard boards used today, they'll put the power of GPUs into more compact form factors than ever before.
Pascal is due in 2016.

New Android Bug Causes "Bricked" Devices
For those of you that haven't seen this yet, there is a new vulnerability out there that can brick your Android device. There seems to be a bit of debate over the term "bricked" so I'll just clarify the situation by saying you're "screwed" if it happens to you.

We recently read about an Android system crash vulnerability affecting Google's Bouncer™ infrastructure, one that, alarmingly, also affects mobile devices with Android OS versions 4.0 and above. We believe that this vulnerability may be used by cybercriminals to do some substantial damage on Android smartphones and tablets. The device is stuck in an endless reboot loop, or a bootloop. This can render the device unusable, which some may consider "bricking" it.
