The SSD Endurance Experiment: Data retention after 600TB
Six weeks have passed since our last SSD endurance update. When we last visited our heroes, they had just crossed the half-petabyte threshold—no small feat for a collection of consumer-grade drives that includes the Corsair Neutron GTX, Intel 335 Series, Kingston HyperX 3K, and Samsung 840 Series and 840 Pro. Those drives have now left the 600TB mark in the rear-view mirror, so it's time for another update.
If you think it's taken longer than usual to add 100TB to the total, you're right. The truth is, the SSDs have been on hiatus, and so have I. The drives hit the 600TB mark about a week before I was scheduled to escape to Thailand for a two-week ...

Friday night topic: Fighter planes and such
This is probably very junior high of me, but every once in a while, I just open up some browser tabs to Wikipedia and start reading about fighter jets and other cool sorts of military planes. They represent, in some ways, the pinnacle of modern technology, and I'm always curious to see what's going to happen with them next.
Fighter planes are in a bit of a weird spot right now, with cost overruns bringing an end to ...

New Thermaltake tower coolers leave room for tall DIMMs
Tower-style heatsinks are all well and good, but they can crowd the area around the CPU socket. That's bad news if you have tall memory modules with jumbo heat spreaders.
Thermaltake's newly announced NiC Series coolers purport to address that problem. The fin arrays on the NiC Series L31 and L32 are only 40-mm ...

HP's PC business sees unexpected revenue growth
We don't normally cover HP's financials, but the company's fiscal Q1 numbers are noteworthy. As ZDNet points out, HP's Personal Systems business did a fair bit better than expected, growing its revenue by 4% compared to a year ago. Here's a swanky infographic from the presentation on the company's Investor Relations page:

Microsoft snazzes up Office web apps with new Office Online portal
Web-based version of Office apps have been around for a long time—we wrote about the first Office Web Apps tech preview way back in September 2009. As of today, the app suite has a new name, Office Online, and a new home, the Office.com web portal. The portal offers easy access to web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, and it also points to some of Microsoft's other web services, like Outlook.com and the newly rebranded OneDrive cloud storage service.

Thief launch trailer is part cheese, part awesome
All right, all right, I'll quit it with the Thief trailers—but only after this last one. The game is coming out next Tuesday (or, if you're in Europe, next Friday), and the folks at Eidos Montreal and Square Enix have whipped up a little three-minute video to set the stage. The clip is laden with cheesy dialogue ("Don't become a ghost yourself!" "I've been a ghost all my life...") but there are also some slick, goosebump-inducing portions. See for yourself:

Valve made a documentary about competitive Dota 2 gamers
One year ago, Valve revealed that it was working with J.J. Abrams on several projects, including movie adaptations of Half-Life and Portal. We haven't heard anything about those prospective films since, but we do have details on another one. Valve has been working on a feature-length documentary that explores the world of competitive Dota 2 gaming. Appropriately dubbed Free to Play, the movie is scheduled to be released March 19 on Steam.
There's a trailer, of course, and ...

These are the mining machines monopolizing high-end Radeons
Demand from the cryptocurrency mining scene seems to be messing with the market for high-end Radeon graphics cards. First, members of the R9 280 and 290 families were in short supply. The cards eventually became more widely available, but only at premium prices. In fact, just last week, the R9 290X hit $900 on Newegg, up substantially from its suggested list price of $549.
High-end Radeons based on AMD's GCN architecture are particularly adept at doing the math required to generate cryptocurrencies, and the mining community appears to be buying cards in droves. One needs to look no further than ...

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 750 Ti 'Maxwell' graphics processor
So this is different. I don't recall the last time a new GPU architecture made its worldwide debut in a lower-end graphics card—or if I do, I'm not about to admit I've been around that long. In my book, then, Nvidia's "Maxwell" architecture is breaking new ground by hitting the market first in a relatively affordable graphics card, the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, and its slightly gimpy twin, the GeForce GTX 750.
Don't let the "750" in those names confuse you. Maxwell is the honest-to-goodness successor to the Kepler architecture that's been the basis of other GeForce GTX 600 and 700 series graphics cards, and it's ...
