Apple cleared by appeals court of using Motorola patents
Apple hasn't infringed on a disputed Motorola patent in its iPhone, an appeals court said Friday. The ruling is a blow to Motorola, which had petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., after an earlier ruling by the International Trade Commission.

SAP's revenue mix is slowly shifting to cloud, preliminary figures show
SAP's business is gradually shifting to the SaaS (software as a service) model while sales of its Hana in-memory database platform continue to grow quickly, according to preliminary fourth-quarter and year-end results the company released Friday. Software revenue for the quarter ended Dec. 31 fell 2 percent on an IFRS (international financial reporting standards) basis to €1.9 billion ($2.58 billion), while cloud subscriptions and support jumped 66 percent to €209 million ($284 million), SAP said.

Update: Target now says up to 110 million affected by data breach
Up to 110 million people, about a third of the U.S. population, may be affected by a data breach at retailer Target, nearly triple the number the company first estimated in mid-December. A Target spokeswoman clarified late Friday that a 70 million figure released earlier in the day was in addition to the 40 million people the company first estimated to be affected by the breach. It was unclear earlier if the 70 million included the original 40 million victims.

Amazon makes it easier to submit mobile apps with new developer portal
Amazon.com has opened a new portal that aims to help developers create Android apps for its Appstore and take advantage of its cross-platform APIs with the help of better tools and documentation.  The retailing giant seems hell-bent on giving Google a run for its money with the Appstore. In the last 10 months it has made its competitor to the Google Play Store available worldwide, adding the ability for developers to submit Web apps and sell physical goods in their apps.

Facebook killing off 'sponsored stories' that some users hated
Facebook is pulling the plug on a controversial advertising program that served ads to people based on the activity of their friends, such as "Likes" and check-ins. On Thursday, the company said in its developers forum that it would be phasing out the ad type, which is called "sponsored stories," effective April 9. After that, advertisers will no longer be able to create such ads, the company said.
