Stay of execution for Missouri serial killer

Joseph Paul Franklin, an avowed white supremacist, was convicted and sentenced to death for killing one man and wounding two outside a St. Louis-area synagogue in 1977. He was scheduled to be executed early on Wednesday at a Missouri prison. Franklin, 63, has been linked to the deaths of at least 18 other people.

Creigh Deeds, a 55-year-old Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2009, was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with stab wounds to his head and upper body, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. His 24-year-old son, Austin "Gus" Deeds, was alive at the home in Millboro, about 100 miles west of Richmond, when police arrived, Geller said, but died at the scene of a gunshot wound.

Fla. judge sets Zimmerman bond on assault charge, forbids weapons

Zimmerman was released by sheriff's deputies from a jail in Sanford, Florida, after a court hearing in which Seminole County Judge Fred Schott said he found probable cause for Monday's arrest and set bail at $9,000. The judge set January 7 as the date for Zimmerman's next appearance in court on charges stemming from a domestic dispute on Monday, when he allegedly pointed a shotgun at his girlfriend in her central Florida home. He also banned Zimmerman from any travel outside Florida and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device for the duration of his release on bond.

Without an accord on the Bilateral Security Agreement, the United States says it could pull out all of its troops at the end of 2014, leaving Afghanistan's fledgling security forces on their own to fight the Taliban-led insurgency. Security was tight in Kabul ahead of the Loya Jirga, a traditional Afghan grand assembly convened to debate matters of national importance, following a suicide bomb attack outside the tent over the weekend. "The Loya Jirga is crucial for the future of our country," said Farhad Sediqqi, a member of parliament who will attend the assembly.

OLBIA (Italy) (AFP) - Italian emergency workers searched house by house on the island of Sardinia on Tuesday after a Mediterranean cyclone triggered flash floods, leaving 18 people dead and forcing thousands to seek emergency shelter. "We are looking inside homes, inside basements, particularly in outlying areas," Gianfranco Galaffu, local director of the civil protection agency for the worst affected northern part of the island, told AFP. For now we are taking care of the most acute emergencies," he said, adding that personnel and equipment were being sent in from other parts of Sardinia and mainland Italy. Thousands were displaced by the flooding, said Environment Minister Andrea Orlando.
