Deal of the week: Cheap storage, a Bay Trail discount, and more
Even with Black Friday discounts not due for another week, there are plenty of bargain-priced SSDs out there today. The most appealing one may be Seagate's 600 SSD 240GB, which debuted in May with a $210 asking price. Thanks to subsequent price cuts and a new, $20 discount, the drive can now be purchased for only $170 at Newegg. That works out to about $0.71 per gigabyte, and two-day shipping is free.
SSDs are best paired with mechanical storage, and Newegg has a couple of nice discounts on that front, too. The RAID- and NAS-optimized WD Red 4TB we looked at in September has already fallen ...

Intel reveals upcoming Atom SoCs, opens foundry business to competitors
Intel made some interesting revelations at an investor event yesterday. Perhaps the most telling came from chairman Andy Bryant, who admitted to being "a little embarrassed that we seemed to have lost our way." Bryant was referring to Intel's failure to recognize the shift from traditional PCs to smartphones and tablets, and he said the company is "paying the price for that right now." New Intel CEO Brian Krzanich seems to be righting the ship, though.
Part of Krzanich's plan includes more focus on the Atom processors that go into smartphones and tablets. On the front, he mentioned two codenames we haven't heard before. Broxton is a new Atom SoC due in mid-2015. It will be based ...

Valve prepping beta test for local game streaming
Local game streaming is one of the most intriguing aspects of Valve's SteamOS, but it's not limited to that operating system. The feature is also designed to work between any two Steam-equipped PCs, and some lucky Steam users will soon be able to try it for themselves. A beta test is "coming soon," according to the official In-Home Streaming group on Steam. Interested users are encouraged to join the group to make themselves eligible for the beta. At least initially, participants will be selected at random from that group.

Valve developer event teases virtual reality plans
Valve is holding a developer event in January, and the session list reveals some interesting tidbits about the company's plans for virtual reality. Programming wizard Michael Abrash is holding a session on "What VR could, should, and almost certainly will be within two years." He'll show a prototype based on the sort of VR hardware that's expected to be available to consumers in a couple of years. It's unclear if this means Valve intends to produce a headset of its own, though.
The Oculus Rift seems to the the leading candidate for consumer headsets, but the final version isn't ready yet. Its inventor, Palmer Luckey, is leading a session titled "Porting games to Virtual Reality." Luckey has said in the past that the ...
