ABI Research says the Moto X dominates the competition
I have yet to get my grubby mits on the Moto X, but it looks like ABI Research has given it the once over and come out with nothing but good things to say about the first smartphone released by Motorola after its acquisition by Google.

When the Moto X stands against the iPhone 5S, the former uses around 2.5 times less battery power to do the same tasks, and has 20% more pixels on its display to boot. ABI Research says the Moto X with all its great qualities, far outweighs providing a new phone that has a new casing, new colors or a fingerprint scanner.

GTA V update pushed out, will fix 'game progress loss' in GTA Online
Grand Theft Auto V is breaking all sorts of records, but it's also breaking gamers' hearts by being problematic in GTA Online unfortunately. But it looks like those days could be behind Rockstar, with the latest patch hopefully fixing GTA Online's various issues.

The update should fix the issues we reported on a few days ago now, but Rockstar says with the exception of "some specific instances where players purchase a vehicle and the save does not occur due to a cloud save failure." A separate patch will be pushed out to fix those issues. The patch hitting GTA V will fix the following issues:
- Fixes multiple issues causing character deletion or other loss of progress
- Fixes issues causing infinite loading, infinite sky cams, and missing interface options between jobs
- Fixes an issue causing the "replay" option to be locked out on certain jobs
- Fixes an issue where a player would become stuck in the mod garage when respraying a Sanchez motor bike
- Fixes an issue where the Player became stuck inside Los Santos Customs during Online tutorial flow.
- Fixes an issue causing the loss of guns and ammo
- Fixes issues causing GTA races ending early because of players spawning too far ahead
- Fixes issues in Last Team Standing where sessions would not progress past the lobby
- Fixes issues with network errors when joining Last Team Standing using Quick Job
- Added clarifications around when a player is using a temporary character in GTA Online during Rockstar Cloud server outages
- Adjusts the monetary penalty for being killed in a One on One match

Foursquare for iOS gets refreshed look and real-time recommendations
Today Foursquare released an update to its app for iOS that introduces a completely new UI design. The new design was first released on Android back in August, and has finally began rolling out to iPhone users. Unfortunately, in the beginning only a few thousand users will receive the update while Foursquare works out any bugs that may pop up.

Foursquare had the following to say in a statement:
Today we're excited to start rolling out this smarter Foursquare. Here's how it will work: when you sit down to dinner, we might ping you with the can't-miss dish on the menu (like the screenshot from a sushi bar below). Or when you arrive in a new neighborhood or city, we'll suggest a few places that your friends love (like below, after you've wandered into a new neighborhood). It's like having a ton of local friends stuffed in your pocket wherever you go.
Because it's powered by billions of check-ins, it's also smart: we're going to ping you when you sit down at a new place where your friend left a tip, not when you're on your daily walk to work. And using this feature doesn't check you in; this isn't for sharing, just for making sure you don't miss great things.

Seagate NAS 4TB HDD Enterprise Review
Introduction

For years, a visitor to a tech forum would find a veritable flood of posts in the NAS section asking which desktop HDD's are best for NAS usage. Surprisingly, many of these posts from those in the hunt for reliable and reasonably priced HDD's weren't always 'typical' consumers, they also encompassed many in the SMB and SOHO environment. While higher-end nearline and enterprise HDD's have always been advised for NAS usage, many balked at the high price and actively sought out cheaper alternatives.
Finding a desktop HDD that will work in any one of the hundreds of different NAS models can become somewhat of a gamble. Many times users will find a HDD that will simply plug in and work, but then become plagued by issues with repetitive unnecessary RAID rebuilds. This stems from the TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) settings on common desktop HDDs. While TLER comes under different names depending upon the manufacturer of the HDD, the basic premise is the same.
Even during normal operation, HDD's are prone to errors when reading and writing data to the platters. There are a number of techniques utilized by the HDD to combat and repair these errors. During the frantic attempt to correct an error, the HDD stops communicating with the NAS. If the repair takes more than seven seconds, the vast majority of RAID systems will drop the HDD from the array. Once dropped the user has to withstand a long rebuild period, during which the performance of the NAS is greatly impacted. There really aren't many storage solutions slower than a degraded RAID 5, and for home users this can become an exercise in futility.
For those relying upon a NAS in an SMB or SOHO environment (such as a dentist, veterinarian, or lawyer's office), this slow performance can actually result in a massive impact upon their ability to conduct work in a timely fashion. Another TLER error during the rebuild period can result in a total loss of all the data stored on the NAS, turning an inconvenience, into a disaster.
Enter the new NAS HDD's from Seagate. These HDD's, like the ones offered by WD, are designed to combat the TLER problem head on. If the error recovery takes longer than the appointed time, a NAS HDD can actually communicate with the RAID code, informing it that there is a problem with data recovery. This hands the problem off to the NAS, allowing the NAS to repair the error itself. The NAS will perform a targeted RAID rebuild, only repairing the effected data. This results in reliable and efficient performance in RAID environments.
The Seagate NAS HDD's are qualified with all major NAS vendors, and feature other enhancements to optimize them for NAS usage. NASware is a suite of firmware features that improves drive reliability, provides vibration reduction, and delivers optimized power settings. Vibration from other HDDs in a multi-bay NAS can introduce performance and reliability concerns. This is combated with a dual plane balance system to provide less vibration than typical desktop HDD's.
The lower thermal threshold of a NAS HDD also protects the inner workings of the NAS from excessive heat, and reduces the amount of fan noise in models with self-adjusting fans.

WD Red and WD Se NAS HDD Enterprise RAID Report
Introduction

WD's NAS HDD market segmentation is a perfect example of the shrinking difference between top-of-the-line nearline/enterprise HDD's and consumer hardware. The WD Red series is geared for the SMB and SOHO crowd with 1-5 bay NAS units. For a small price premium, customers can acquire the higher rated WD SE series of HDDs, geared for SMB (Small/Medium Business) and large enterprise applications with 6-12 bays.
In many cases, users looking for the next level of performance from their 1-5 bay NAS units turn to the WD Se. Both the WD Se and the WD Red share many characteristics that begin with the SATA 6Gb/s connection. They also share the same 64MB of cache and a bit error rate of 1 per 10E14. Both HDD's are designed for 24/7 use, and the duty cycle of a NAS HDD experiences many transitions from various idle states to active use. This is reflected in the robust 300,000 cycles Load/Unload cycle ratings for both drives.
One of the immediate performance improvements when making the jump from the Red to the Se is the difference in platter speed. The Red utilizes WD's IntelliPower technology, which many speculate alters the speed between 5,400 and 5,900 RPM's. The 7,200 RPM advantage leads to enhanced speed from the Se, but also an increase in power consumption. The Red consumes a peak of 4.5 Watts active, while the Se has a higher active consumption of 9.5 Watts. The noise of NAS HDD's can become a bit of a distraction in home user environments, and the WD Red has a lower decibel rating of 24, in contrast to the 28 offered by the Se.

The disparity between the MTBF and warranty periods from both drives likely stems from the test environments during qualification. In larger rack environments, which the Se is designed for, there is a tremendous increase in vibration and heat. Vibration is introduced by other drives in the rack, and with the intended purpose being 6-12 drive racks, the drives are subjected to more vibration and heat. The drives are also tested with their respective workloads, and with the Se having a higher 180TB rating, the drive endures a more stringent test regimen.
In similar environments, the Se will outlive the Red, as reflected in the warranty period. The warranty period of a NAS is important, many users simply want to buy several high-quality drives, configure them in the NAS, and forget them for the next several years. For many the higher warranty period of five years for the Se, and the enhanced speed, make them an attractive solution.
Today we will test the 4-drive RAID performance of the WD Se and the WD Red series head-to-head in both RAID 0 and RAID 5 configurations.

Thermaltake Toughpower DPS 850-Watt 80 PLUS Gold Power Supply Review
Introduction

Thermaltake thought it was about time that someone gave Corsair a run for their money and they've been hard at work to make sure what they come up with would be well worth the wait.
What they've designed is the new Toughpower DPS series. The DPS is a digitally controlled, fully modular power supply and comes in 750W and 850W models out the door with more to follow shortly.
Thermaltake also spent a long time polishing their software for the DPS series and it is what delayed the launch of this power supply for so long. We won't be covering the software in this review, but instead will be going over it with a separate review so that we can go into the full details of what it has to offer. This review will focus solely on the DPS power supply itself, so let's start by taking a look at the I/O specifications for the DPS 850W we've got on the bench today.
Specifications, Availability and Pricing

The DPS-850 has an MSRP of $219.99. This makes the Thermaltake DPS-850 one of the most expensive 850W power supplies on the market. Newegg, at the time of writing, has the power supply in stock, but you'll have to cough up shipping for it too, bringing the price up to $227.98. Thermaltake offers a seven year warranty on the DPS series.

Prolimatech Armageddon Blue Series CPU Cooler Review
Introduction

The other thing that put this cooler on the map was it was one of the first coolers I saw that delivered a serious mounting solution that took all of the guess work out of mounting some of the antiquated designs we had to work with at that time. With a solidly designed tower cooler, and this revolution in mounting, Prolimatech was onto something, and customers took notice.
We then got a hold of the Samuel 17, built for HTPC or low power applications. Again with solid construction and enough designing and trial and error, they delivered what is still one of the better low-profile CPU cooling solutions, specifically in those instances where room inside of the chassis just isn't there for much other than the stock cooling solutions. Then not too long after that we took a look at the MK-26, where Prolimatech took all of its CPU cooler design and know-how, and delivered that knowledge into a GPU cooling solution. The sad thing about all of this is the fact that it has been almost a year to date since the MK-26, and it has been two years plus since we saw anything new in CPU cooling from them.
The good thing is that their hiatus has ended, and they have found us once again to look at something new in its field of CPU coolers. Of course years ago there was the original concept of the Armageddon cooler from them. Since then they have developed a "Special Edition" line of CPU coolers where they have taken the likes of the Megahalems, Genesis, and now the Armageddon, and offered them in various colored solutions.
This is what brings us here today as we get up close and personal with the latest addition to that series of coolers with the Armageddon Blue Series CPU cooler from Prolimatech.

QNAP TS-669 PRO 6-Bay SMB NAS Review
Introduction

The software was fine, but the extra applications weren't ready yet and it scared me a bit. QNAP has a large add-on software library and most of the existing packages weren't ready during the beta. Now, the packages that were available on 3.8 are converted over and then some.
The new QTS 4.0 software update is more than just a software update. The new package also improves performance. The QNAP TS-669 Pro we're reviewing today uses the same processor and RAM as the TS-669L we reviewed a few months back. Both are 6-bay units, so we can see the performance improvements in transfer speeds in this review.
This review is about more than just the new software and the performance that comes with it. Today we're looking at the QNAP TS-669 Pro, a 6-bay NAS that sits in the middle of QNAP's SMB product lineup.
Let's take a look at the hardware features and then look at the new software.

AMD Radeon R7 260X 2GB Video Card Review
Introduction

While we got a chance to look at a number of video cards that AMD will be launching in the coming weeks, it comes as no real surprise that we aren't seeing all of them. Releasing all models at the exact same time would really flood the internet with reviews and that would be overwhelming for the consumer. Instead, AMD will be drip feeding the samples over the coming weeks to spread it out as much as possible. Of course, they want coverage to last weeks, if not months, so they can constantly be seen.
We'll be starting off with the new R7 260X today, and being an AMD reference card, we don't have anything to talk about when it comes to the package. Instead we'll as always be getting stuck straight into the video card and cover the main specifications that are on offer, plus of course the main features.
The new series of AMD cards bring with it some really cool features with one of the major ones being AMD TrueAudio. We'll cover this a little on the next page, along with the major specifications that this particular model brings with it. With that all said and done, I think we can just move straight onto the card and see what exactly AMD is offering us today with the new R7 260X 2GB.

Corsair Force LS 240GB SSD Review
Introduction

Sadly, we've learned the new Force LS won't hit the US market. We suspect this has something to do with an existing product with the Phison S8 controller from MyDigitalSSD. MDSSD has a long history with Phison and this is the only reason we can think of for Corsair not to bring the Force LS to the US market.
Still, Corsair felt they needed a value offering and the Force LS fits the role. With 25nm flash nearly impossible to purchase, the Force Series 3 and Force GT drives are nearing end of life status. Nearly a year ago Corsair released the Neutron GTX to handle flagship duty and the base Neutron to fit somewhere in the middle. LS sits just below both Neutron products.
Let's dive in now and take a close look and see how it does in our testing.

LUXA2 P2 5000mAh Aluminum Portable Battery Review

LUXA2 is pricing its P2 portable battery with an MSRP of $64.95, which is definitely not too bad for something with both style and substance. It's the perfect accessory for LUXA2's Groovy speaker, but it is a damn fine portable battery by itself, too. Let's start with the unboxing and specs of the P2 portable battery.

The P2 charger is quite sleek, with the all-aluminum body. Toward the end of the device we have the power button and LED which tells you how much charge is left. The LUXA2 will flash blue when charging, and once it's complete, it will flash green. It's not a super bright LED, but it's bright enough to not be a massive distraction on your desk. The aluminum stays cool, and is nice to the touch - something LUXA2 seem to be gunning for with this P2 portable battery.

Overall, I love the LUXA2 P2. It's sleek, thin and features 5000mAh of charge - which is enough for anyone these days. You'd have to be really going through some charge to need anymore, so if you're in the market for a sleek looking portable battery, you can't go past the LUXA P2.

SanDisk Extreme II 120GB RAID 0 SSD Report
Introduction

RAID 0 can do the same thing as SLI or CrossFire does for video, for your storage system. How would you like to double or triple your storage performance? You can with RAID 0 and the nice thing is, RAID's already baked into your motherboard.
The biggest bottleneck on your PC has always been, and continues to be non-volatile storage. Even the fastest SSD can only serve up data at a tiny fraction of a CPU's capability to process it. Remember the first time you tried an SSD? Could you imagine ever going back to a spinner? SSD's have redefined the meaning of enthusiast-class PC.
RAID 0 takes SSD performance to another level and, that's exactly what this review is going to demonstrate. RAID 0 is simple to setup, reliable, and is something that once you try, will have you wondering how you ever lived without it.
We've chosen SanDisk's Extreme II 120GB SSD's for TweakTown's first Haswell based RAID 0 report. In this report, we'll demonstrate how RAID 0 increases storage performance and how that performance scales from 1 to 3 drives.

TweakTown CPU Cooler Testing and Methodology
Introduction

Since the days of the older system, there have been a few advances in the way the processors are designed, and these changes make cooling the newer CPUs a much tougher job than it had been previously. First off is the way the Haswell CPU has power supplied, and how it uses the voltage once it is inside of the CPU. The second thing that will make manufacturers of CPU coolers shiver in their boots is the introduction of the AVX 512 that will make any cooler I have yet to test buckle under the stress.
Therefore we have tested many applications, many coolers, and in every way we could think might have an impact on the coolers ability, and have devised a system of testing that is new to our readers, but on that same note, is something that anyone could do at home and reproduce, as long as all the variables match what we are using.
The overall idea here is to show the system we will be testing with, along with how we got to that conclusion. You will be seeing images of all of the hardware with brief explanations of why we chose those components. You will also be given all of the steps and conditions surrounding the testing system, and why we do what we do to fill the charts with results for you to find the best CPU cooler for your needs. I will also be providing some of the older coolers in the new charts as a marker for you to be able to judge all of the other coolers I tested.
This way we can move forward with some relevance to the older charts, and not just leave all of them in the dust with no real way to see how all of the older coolers would stack up to today's new computing hardware as well.

FIFA 14 PlayStation 3 Review

The focus for EA this year with FIFA has been all about momentum. On the next generation consoles (which will have FIFA at launch), EA has built a brand new engine called IGNITE, however on the current generation, we have more one more go around with the old technology and the strain on the systems is starting to show a little bit. EA wanted a game where players couldn't turn on a dime and first touch wasn't guaranteed. They said it was a bit more like what you see on the television, but the result has turned out to be a bit more frustrating than EA may have intended.
FIFA 14 is the first time really I have felt frustrated playing a football game. Most of the time if a goal is scored against me, I know why and get on with the game, but in FIFA 14, it is a constant struggle in general to get the ball, let alone score. FIFA has focused on being a slow methodical game like PES the past few years and overall it's worked. This year is no different, but the realism is going to be despised by just as many as those who love it.

However, for the rest of us, this is a frustrating game. It is almost controller smashing frustrating sometimes and this for a football game is disappointing. You pass a ball not knowing if the player will take it properly and it's all random. Seemingly nothing you do really can influence the random number that determines if the player makes a mistake or not. That said, there are positives from this new gameplay. Players at full speed can no longer turn on a dime (in fact, they have a turning circle more like a cruise ship), and you can use a player's momentum against them. If you see a player move one way and dodge to the other, that player has to stop, turn around and start running just like in the real-world. This is one area where this system does actually improve the game.

EA Sports Matchday returns and is already well into action with the new European season under way. Basically Matchday downloads stats from the EA servers based on the latest results. So, if your club team is on a roll, their stats will get a boost and so will their attitude, but in a relegation battle, the opposite happens. This is actually an incredibly interesting component of the game and to see how the teams can flip flop during a season.

On the licensing side, EA has had some wins and losses this year. First of all the Brazilian team is not licensed this year which is interesting considering they one of the top teams globally right now, but they have had a win in the Camp Nou from Barcelona returning as a selectable stadium. However, overall, they still remain formidable in this area with the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Hyundai A-League, J-league and others all appearing in the game. There is no doubt that this is where EA is dominating right now and it is hard to see whether the other side can fix this.

We recently got the chance to see FIFA 14 on the next generation consoles and it is clear as day that is where this year's product is going to shine. There is the possibility that they have tried to translate changes from the next gen product down to this level and it just hasn't worked. The game can be frustrating to play, but it can also be enjoyable.
Most games have this ebb and flow and really not knowing what the game is going to do next (be it a player's first touch or if a player will pass correctly) is frustrating. FIFA 14 isn't necessarily a bad game, but it's certainly in our opinion the worst of a very good bunch from the previous few years. Next generation will see this title return to the top upon its release, but for now, wait until then.
