IBM's results hampered by slowing hardware sales
Managing its way nimbly through times of economic sluggishness, IBM reported a 6 percent increase in profit for the third quarter even as its revenue declined. IBM's third-quarter profit was $4.0 billion, compared to $3.8 billion in the third quarter of 2012, the company announced Wednesday. Revenue was $23.7 billion, compared to $24.7 billion in the year prior.

Tilera chips add muscle to x86 servers and free up computing capacity
New Tilera co-processors tuned for Hadoop, video and networking applications can free up the primary CPUs of x86 servers to run other applications. The company's Tile-IQ series of chips will have up to 72 low-power CPU cores, which will bring extra computing muscle to speed up servers, said Bob Doud, director of processor strategy for Tilera. The Tile-IQ series includes the Tilencore-GX chips, which will come with nine, 16, 36 and 72 cores.

Cerberus explores acquiring BlackBerry
Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management is reportedly considering a bid to acquire all of ailing BlackBerry. The Bloomberg news service, citing a person close to the situation, reported Wednesday that Cerberus is in the early stages of weighing an offer and has signed an agreement with BlackBerry to gain access to its financial information for more insights.

Security firm releases tool to audit SAP's HANA
A new tool from security vendor Onapsis aims to secure SAP's in-memory database HANA, the German company's fastest-growing data processing product. Onapsis, a Boston-based company that specializes in SAP security, will incorporate the tool into its X1 suite, which scans for vulnerabilities and configuration problems in SAP deployments.

VMware reverses decision on ThinApp licensing, readies new version
ThinApp users have scored a victory as VMware has decided to keep offering it as a separate product and said a new version will arrive soon. ThinApp uses virtualization to encapsulate applications and isolate them from the underlying operating system. Doing that helps eliminate version conflicts and simplify application delivery and management, according to VMware.

Oracle plugs severe security holes that put systems at hijack risk
Oracle on Tuesday fixed 127 security issues in Java, its database, and other products, patching some flaws that could let attackers take over systems. This is the first time Oracle has included Java in its quarterly Critical Patch Update (CPU), as part of the company's previously announced plan to increase the frequency of Java security releases from one every four months to one every three months.

Intel delays Broadwell chips for PCs and hybrids
Intel has delayed production of its "Broadwell" processors due to a manufacturing glitch, something analysts say could postpone the launch of PCs and tablets based on the new chip. Intel ran into some problems with the 14-nanometer process used to manufacture the chips and will have to fix them before it can resume production, CEO Brian Krzanich said during Intel's earnings call on Tuesday.

Twitter doubled revenue but racked up sharply higher losses in Q3
Twitter lost almost as much money in the July-to-September quarter as it did in the first six months of this year, according to a regulatory disclosure made by the company on Tuesday. Twitter, which is preparing for an imminent initial public offering of its stock to investors, submitted an updated S1 filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that contained financial results for the first nine months of its current financial year. Its previous filing had only contained figures for the first six months, from February until the end of June.

Intel's Bay Trail chips to hit 10 tablets, hybrids next month
Intel's recently introduced Atom chips, code-named Bay Trail, will be in 10 tablets and hybrids by the end of November when the holiday shopping season takes off in the U.S. That's less than Intel hoped for, but it is faster adoption for Atom chips in tablets than for their predecessors, said Brian Krzanich, Intel's CEO, during a call on Tuesday to discuss third-quarter earnings.
