RumorTT: Sony to unveil VR headset at TGS 2013, works with DriveClub
It looks like Oculus VR could have some competition in the VR space, with Sony rumored to unveil a virtual reality headset at the Tokyo Game Show later this month that would work with the PlayStation 4.

CVG and Eurogamer's sources have said that at least one developer, Evolution Studios, is working on providing support for the VR headset with its DriveClub game. DriveClub is Sony's latest first-party racing sim, and a PS4 launch title. Evolution Studios is reportedly incorporating support for the VR headset that would simulate the vehicle's cockpit.

Xbox One CPU receives 150MHz boost in CPU clock speed
The Xbox One isn't too far away, but according to Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing and strategy for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, the Xbox One is in full production.

He also said: "We'll announce a launch date shortly. We recently just went into full production, so we're now producing en masse Xbox One consoles. We've had real good progress on the system. In fact, we just updated the CPU performance to 1.75 GHz on top of the graphics performance improvement, so the system is really going to shine [and] the games look pretty incredible."
This is the second tweak Microsoft has done to the Xbox One, where we saw an increase in the Xbox One's GPU clock speed in August from 800MHz to 853MHz.

Did Google show us the Nexus 5 during its Android 4.4 announcement?
Something I want quite bad is the Nexus 5, but with the announcement and massive tease of Android 4.4, it might be a little ways off yet. Well, it looks like the refreshed smartphone from Google might have been teased during the KitKat announcement, as you can see below.

For comparison, the woman on the right is holding the Nexus 4, Google's current flagship smartphone. I'm hoping we have an announcement soon, but now the question is will Google unleash the Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat, or Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie?

SpaceTT: Hubble Telescope captures beautiful "Cosmic Caterpillar"
Recently, NASA released images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope that show off what scientists are describing as a "Cosmic Caterpillar" that stretches across the universe for nearly 6,000,000,000,000 miles. The so-called Caterpillar is actually a massive cloud of space dust and gas that is collapsing in on itself to form a new star.

At the moment, it is unclear if the "caterpillar cloud"--or IRAS 20324+4057--will be able to fight back by gathering enough mass to counteract the erosion. However, it could eventually one day collect enough material to collapse into a very bright and quite large star, but everyone reading this will have long been dead and forgotten about before that event happens.

Lenovo CEO to give $3.25 million of personal bonus away to employees
Today, a new report from Bloomberg suggests that Lenovo CEO, Yang Yuanqing, plans on giving away $3.25 million of his bonus to 10,000 of the company's lowest paid workers. Workers in 20 countries will get the payments, including a facility in Mooresville, North Carolina, where Lenovo's US headquarters is located.

10,000 workers only work out to about a third of Lenovo's total employees, but Yang has decided to give the payouts to those who earn the least amount, are paid by the hour, or not eligible for commission or other bonuses that would increase their normal rate of pay. The $3.25 million will not affect Mr. Yang, though, as last year he earned 14.6 million and owns roughly 7 percent of the company's stock.

Google's Sundar Pichai announces that Android 4.4 to be named KitKat
Today seems to be turning into one of those days where the entire world is talking about the mobile devices market. While everyone is focused on the recent news of Microsoft's purchase of Nokia's Mobile Devices business, Google has announced some major news about the future of Android.

Unlike many would think, Google and Nestlé say that the deal does not involve any money changing hands, but rather a collaboration of ideas that are supposed to keep things fun and fresh. Google says that the deal with Nestlé was finalized back in February at Mobile World Congress, but would not allude to a launch date for Android KitKat or would it make mention of any devices that might feature the new operating system.

Amazon launches "MatchBook" program, bundles digital copy with books
Have you ever ordered a paperback or hardcover book from Amazon and wished that you could get the digital copy for your Kindle in the same purchase at a discounted price? If so, an announcement today is sure to make you quite happy. Amazon today announced a new initiative called Kindle Matchbook that will allow customers to include the Kindle edition of physical books in with their order at a highly discounted price.

"If you logged onto your CompuServe account during the Clinton administration and bought a book like Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus from Amazon, Kindle MatchBook now makes it possible for that purchase-18 years later-to be added to your Kindle library at a very low cost," said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President of Kindle Content. "In addition to being a great new benefit for customers, this is an easy choice for publishers and authors who will now be able to earn more from each book they publish."
At the moment, Amazon says that over 10,000 books have been enrolled in the Kindle MatchBook program, with new publishers, authors, and content creators signing up every day. . "It's simple, brilliant, and good for everybody," said best-selling author Marcus Sakey. "I love to have print books on my shelf, but I love reading my Kindle on the go, and there are plenty of titles I'd like both ways. It's ridiculous to ask readers to pay full retail twice for the same book."

Will Nokia's Stephen Elop replace Ballmer at Microsoft? Some say yes
Nothing stirs up the rumor mill quite like a major corporation purchasing another major corporation shortly after the first corporation's CEO announces his retirement. With this morning's announcement that Microsoft is in the process of purchasing Nokia's Devices and Services business, reports are starting to come in that Nokia boss, Stephen Elop, could land in the CEO chair when Microsoft's Steve Ballmer departs from the company sometime in the next 12 months.

Ballmer says Nokia acquisition is a good deal for Microsoft
Microsoft's early morning announcement of its pending acquisition of Nokia has the entire tech world talking this morning, with many speculating about what the future may hold for both companies. Shortly after the official announcement, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer issued a statement to Microsoft employees in the form of a company-wide memo.
The memo mentions that the partnership between Microsoft and Nokia over the last two years has yielded some incredible work and cites the recently released Lumia 1020 41-megapixel Windows Phone as its greatest achievement. Ballmer says that he believes that now is the time for Microsoft to build on this momentum and capitalize on Windows Phone's growing popularity on the Lumia platform.
He goes on to say that Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia is a good deal for both companies in that Microsoft is on the receiving end of some incredible talent, technology, and intellectual property. In an article I posted earlier this morning, Ballmer alluded to the fact that he feels that Microsoft can take the Lumia line of smartphones to an entirely new level that was unachievable with Nokia. I have pasted the full memo below in the event you would like to read it.
To: MS FTEs
Date: Sep. 2, 8:00 PM PDT (Sep. 3, 6:00 AM EET)
Subject: Accelerating Growth
We announced some exciting news today: We have entered into an agreement to purchase Nokia's Devices & Services business, which includes their smartphone and mobile phone businesses, their award-winning design team, manufacturing and assembly facilities around the world, and teams devoted to operations, sales, marketing and support.
For Microsoft, this is a bold step into the future and the next big phase of the transformation we announced on July 11.
We are very excited about the proposal to bring the best mobile device efforts of Microsoft and Nokia together. Our Windows Phone partnership over the past two and half years has yielded incredible work - the stunning Lumia 1020 is a great example. Our partnership has also yielded incredible growth. In fact, Nokia Windows Phones are the fastest-growing phones in the smartphone market.
Now is the time to build on this momentum and accelerate our share and profits in phones. Clearly, greater success with phones will strengthen the overall opportunity for us and our partners to deliver on our strategy to create a family of devices and services for individuals and businesses that empower people around the globe at home, at work and on the go, for the activities they value most.
We have laid out Microsoft's strategic rationale for this transaction in a presentation that I encourage you to read.
This is a smart acquisition for Microsoft, and a good deal for both companies. We are receiving incredible talent, technology and IP. We've all seen the amazing work that Nokia and Microsoft have done together.
Given our long partnership with Nokia and the many key Nokia leaders that are joining Microsoft, we expect a smooth transition and great execution.
As is always the case with an acquisition, the first priority is to keep driving through close, which we expect in the first quarter of 2014, following approval by Nokia's shareholders, regulatory approvals, and other closing conditions.
But I also know people will have some questions about what happens post-close. While details aren't final, here is what we know, and how we're generally approaching integration:
1. Stephen Elop will be coming back to Microsoft, and he will lead an expanded Devices team, which includes all of our current Devices and Studios work and most of the teams coming over from Nokia, reporting to me.
2. Julie Larson-Green will continue to run the Devices and Studios team, and will be focused on the big launches this fall including Xbox One and our Surface enhancements. Julie will be joining Stephen's team once the acquisition closes, and will work with him to shape the new organization.
3. As part of the acquisition, a number of key engineering leaders will be joining Microsoft from Nokia, reporting to Stephen in his new capacity:
* Jo Harlow, who will continue to lead the Smart Devices team
* Timo Toikkanen, who will continue to lead the Mobile Phones team
* Stefan Pannenbecker, who will lead Design
* Juha Putkiranta, who will lead the integration effort on Nokia's behalf
4. Regarding the sales team, we plan to keep the Nokia field team, led by Chris Weber, intact and as the nexus of the devices sales effort, so that we can continue to build sales momentum. After the deal closes, Chris and his team will be placed under Kevin Turner. We will develop a single integrated team that is selling to operators, and there may be other integration opportunities that we can pursue. Kevin will work with Chris Weber and Chris Capossela to make those plans.
5. Our operating system team under Terry Myerson will continue unchanged, with a mission of supporting both first-party and third-party hardware innovation. We are committed to working with partners, helping them build great products and great businesses on our platform, and we believe this deal will increase our partner value proposition over time. The established rhythms and ways of working between Terry and his team and the incoming Nokia team will serve us well to ensure that we do not disrupt our building momentum.
6. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible.
7. Finance, Legal, HR, Communications, DX / Evangelism, Customer Care and Business Development will integrate functionally at Microsoft. Sourcing, customer logistics and supply chain will be part of Stephen's Devices organization. ICM / IT will also integrate functionally for traditional IT roles. We will need to work through the implications for factory systems given the differing manufacturing processes and systems at both Nokia and Microsoft.
8. We plan to pursue a single set of supporting services for our devices, and we will figure out how to combine the great Nokia efforts into our Microsoft services as we go through the integration process.
9. There are no significant plans to shift where work is done in the world as we integrate, so we expect the Nokia teams to stay largely in place, geographically.
10. Tom Gibbons will lead the integration work for Microsoft. While today's announcement is big news, we have to stay heavily focused on running the current business. We have a huge fall and holiday season ahead of us, so we need to execute flawlessly and continue to drive our business forward. I have no doubt we will.

No new Nokia branded phones, Microsoft says it will rebrand devices
There was a point in the cellular device timeline where pretty much everyone owned a Nokia phone, and to this day, there are many hard-core and very loyal Nokia fans. Unfortunately, with Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, we have seen the end of the Nokia-branded phone.

Furthermore, during a call to investors about the acquisition of Nokia, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that he believes that Microsoft "can probably do better" than Nokia at naming new devices. "I will say that I think we can probably do better for consumer names than 'the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 1020,' and yet because of where both companies are and the independent nature of the businesses, we haven't been able to shorten that. Just take that as a proxy for a range of improvements that we feel we can make. We can simplify the way in which we work with operators and the overall consumer branding and messaging gets much simpler. That is an efficiency of being one company."

Microsoft receives less than $10 per Nokia Windows Phone sold
Maybe this is one of the driving forces behind Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's Services and Devices division today, in that the Redmond-based company isn't even making $10 per Windows Phone-based Nokia device sold.

So while people might be looking at Microsoft taking a big risk acquiring the Services and Devices division from Nokia, in the long run it obviously hopes it'll help them. Microsoft has also said that Nokia's Windows Phones have a gross profit margin in the range of $40 per phone. The Redmond-based software giant is also signing a rather large cheque to Nokia for "platform support", which is kinda like a bribe so that Nokia goes all-in with Windows Phone instead of Android.
The next 12-18 months should be an interesting time for the mobile world, and as the Mobile Devices Editor of TweakTown, I can tell you that I'm incredibly excited.

Microsoft still loves other Windows Phone makers, not just Nokia
I'm sure that most, if not all of Microsoft's Windows Phone partners were calling emergency board meetings today when the Redmond-based giant announced it had acquired Nokia's Devices and Services division, but what does this mean for the future of Windows Phone?

Without going into much detail, I don't think we'll see anything big from the acquisition. By then, Google would have put its foot right down to the metal with Android 5.0 "Key Lime Pie", Google Glass, and enjoying its partners pushing out countless devices. Apple is going to be the underdog going into 2015 with the iPhone, and Microsoft, well, they could surprise us, but they haven't so far.

Oculus Rift VR Development Kit Thoughts So Far and its Future
Introductions
To tell you the truth, I don't know how to tackle this "review"... it's not a review, because the product isn't really a product, it's more of an alpha of a device that might come out next year. You can't really review the first draft of a novel, or the first cut of a movie, so this is more of a "my thoughts on Oculus RIGHT NOW" review.I've used Rift before, but professionally, for TweakTown, when I covered PAX Australia last month. I used the Development Kit first, which is the 720p model, and later on in the day I used the 1080p model. I think the 1080p HD model spoiled me, because the 720p model while it's great, it definitely has its flaws.
What I'm going to do is write this "Preview" then I'll have another piece up which will cover some of the various games I played on the Rift in more detail, with video. I've purchased a Razer Hydra that should arrive tomorrow, and I just finished downloading the entire Half-Life 2 saga which works with both Rift and Hydra. This will be an interesting couple of weeks!
First impressions of the box: awesome. That's the only word that can describe it, pure awesome. Dean uses the word too much in Supernatural, but awesome is a great way to describe something that can't be described with the words "great" or "cool" or "good". It surpasses that. For something that is an alpha product, crowd funded by the general public, the box really blew me away.
It's not like the box is the only part, but it gives you the impression that you're not just about to use any old virtual reality headset, but you're about to wear THE virtual reality headset. You're about to slide on the future of gaming, and quite possibly, the future of technology (yeah, I went there).
Hardware Specifications
The container it comes in, is awesome. As you can see from the pictures below, this isn't some cheap eBay purchase. It's a premium way of displaying the next leap in video games and technology. Before we unbox this bad boy, we'll run through what the Oculus Rift is, and the hardware inside of it.Starting off with the screen itself, which has a resolution of 1280x800 (640x800 per eye). This isn't too bad, but the consumer version will include a resolution of at least 1920x1080. The panel size is 7-inch, which sounds huge, and small at the same time.
We have a 24-bit panel, which is also stereoscopic 3D. The field of view is great, with more than 90 degrees horizontal, and 110 degrees diagonal. This is close to double the FOV of any competing VR device, and is one of the main strengths of Oculus' Rift.
The Rift weighs approximately 379 grams, so it's not that heavy to be sitting on your head for long periods of time, but we will have more on this in the coming week or so after I've had a very long couple of nights with it.
The Rift has a couple of dials on each side that can be tweaked with a screwdriver, which allows the adjustment of each display to be moved closer, or further away from your eye. There's also some interchangeable lenses in the box, which allow for dioptric correction.
Inside the box we have DVI and HDMI input through a control box, a DVI cable, two HDMI cables and a DVI to HDMI adapter. There's a USB interface which handles the tracking data to the host machine, as well as powering the device itself. This is a nice touch, as it doesn't require external power.

This new lineup of three audiophile-grade headsets will be unveiled at IFA Berlin at the Creative exhibit 110 in Hall 3.2, Messe Berlin from September 6-11.
The Aurvana brand represents Creative's premium headsets that deliver true-to-life high performance sound. On top of pristine audio reproduction, the Creative Aurvana Platinum and the Creative Aurvana Gold come loaded with a dazzling array of groundbreaking technological features.

The Creative Aurvana Platinum and Aurvana Gold headsets also incorporate other impressive features such as Tap & Play Near Field Communication (NFC) connectivity, Active Noise Cancellation, Creative Multipoint connectivity (for simultaneous connections to two smart devices, such as to a smartphone and tablet) and support for advanced Bluetooth codecs, making them two of the most feature-packed headsets in the market.

Stunningly Elegant Design

Scythe Introduces the Kaze Chrono Multifunctional Fan Controller
Japanese manufacturer Scythe, famous for its innovative and market leading cooling concepts and accessories, expands its accessories portfolio by a multifunctional fan controller. Scythe Kaze Chrono combines three different functions in one device! The 5,25 inch bay device allows users to control fans separately, display temperatures and can be used as a clock.
The desired information is displayed well structured on a 105 x 30 millimeter LC-Display. Users can adjust the brightness of the display in four steps from very bright to completely shut down. Kaze Chrono weights only 165 grams and can be fitted into a vacant 5,25 inch bay. One of the special highlights is the retro look of the display.
First main function is the ability to control fan speed of up to four case fans. Kaze Chrono supports fan speeds from 0 to 9.990 RPM. To power up the fan controller, both the 5 and 12 Volt lanes are being used. Each channel controls the fan speed by adjusting the supplied voltage, which can be changed between 5 to 12 Volts. Scythe implemented the "12 Volt Spin-up" function, to assure all the fans are spinning up properly, before running with the manually set fan speed. To assure, that malfunctioning fans are being detected, new "Power Feed Control" function is introduced with Kaze Chrono. This function monitors all channels for malfunctioning fans, which run with 0 RPM for more than 15 seconds, and cuts the power supply to the concerned channel automatically.
The second main function is the ability to monitor of up to four temperature channels. Scythe supplies six temperature sensor cables with Kaze Chrono, which can be attached inside the PC freely according to priorities of the user. Kaze Chrono is able to display temperatures in the range of 0 up to 100 degrees Celsius. When reaching 75 degrees Celsius respectively 167 degrees Fahrenheit, pre-set warning will alarm and warn the user both visually and acoustically. Values of the warning alarm can be adjusted or disabled; furthermore, values can be switched to degree Fahrenheit, using the Jumper on the rear side of Kaze Chrono.
Third main function, which was implemented by Japanese cooling expert, is the possibility to use Kaze Chrono as a clock. In this mode, current time will be displayed in big figures on the display. To assure, that the time is being saved correctly, one Lithium battery (CR2032) has been pre-installed in the Kaze Chrono. All required cables and screws are supplied with the Kaze Chrono, to make sure, that the device can be used right away!
Scythe multifunctional fan controller Kaze Chrono is available as of today for 27,50 EUR in stores and online shops.
