Ask the Experts: Which phone should I choose? The Galaxy S4 mini or N
Our Ask the Experts section has a new question, where we have Ted from India who is having trouble choosing between the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Nexus 4 smartphones.

i am planning to buy a smartphone but confused between Galaxy S4 mini and Google Nexus 4.
S4 mini is quite costly, if we look for features comparing both. But the Nexus 4 is not dual-SIM capable and it also doesn't supported micro SD expansion. The rest of the features are better than the Galaxy S4 mini... kindly suggest me which one I should buy.
Is there any other phone which has features like Nexus 4 and also having dual-SIM capabilities?
A: You can view the answer to Ted's question right here.

Google dumps Oracle's MySQL database in favor of MariaDB
Today at the Extremely Large Database conference being held in Stanford California, Google announced that it will be migrating its MySQL systems over to MariaDB. Google has assigned one of its engineers to the MariaDB foundation to aid in the migration.

Cole said that Google has been working with the MariaDB foundation since the beginning of the year in an effort to make the migration over to MariaDB as smooth as possible. He went on to say that the migration involves thousands of MySQL servers within the Google ecosystem and that Google's MySQL team is looking forward to working with the SkySQL MariaDB team to advance the reliability and feature set of MariaDB.
I see this move as nothing but a win-win situation for both Google and MariaDB. I personally know several of the people over at SkySQL / MariaDB and I can honestly say that I have never met a more friendly and helpful group of people. So I want to issue a personal congratulations to the whole MariaDB team and say that I cannot wait to see what comes out of this partnership.

SanDisk launches 256GB Extreme Pro CompactFlash card for 4K HD video
Anyone who has ever attempted to shoot HD video knows that anything above 720p requires massive amounts of storage for high frame rates and good quality. With 4K video quickly becoming the norm, SanDisk has responded to this need for high-capacity, high-speed storage for 4K compatible video recording.

Unfortunately, this is not a card you just walk down to Walmart and buy when you forget your other one at home. Retailing at $1810, this card is a little pricey for your everyday average shooter. As an ex-professional photographer, the price does strike me as being a little high, but I remember a time when I paid $100 each for 1GB CF cards from SanDisk.

Intel's Haswell takes command in new updated NUC lineup
Earlier this week at the 2013 Intel Developer Forum, Intel announced the addition of two new products to its small form-factor NUC lineup, both of which feature the company's new Haswell processors. The D54250WYK sports a Core i5-4250U and the D34010WYK houses the i3-4010U.

Other than the processors, the two models are basically the same machine. Both feature 4K monitor support thanks to DisplayPort technology, and a mini HDMI connector also provides additional video out connectivity. Gigabit Ethernet is also supported via a port on the back of the box.
You will need to bring your own memory, storage, and Wi-Fi to the party, but with a pair of SO-DIMMS and full and half-height mini PCI-Express slots, there is plenty of room for an mSATA SSD and wireless card. The NUC chassis measures in at just 4.59 inches by 4.41 inches and enclosure is only 1.36-inches thick.

Iron Man 3 (2013) Blu-ray Review

Following on from the events of The Avengers, the fearless Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is suffering flashbacks to the events in New York and unable to sleep. Mindful of protecting his partner and Stark Industries CEO Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Stark has been working around the clock, utilizing his talents to construct multiple experimental Iron Man armors. His fears are soon realized when an explosive terrorist calling himself the 'Mandarin' surfaces, adept at hijacking airwaves to broadcast his pirate signal and detonating bombs across the city.
When one attack injures Stark's personal bodyguard Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Stark issues an ill-advised threat, which results in the destruction of his home and lab. Now he'll have to go up against an adversary, who behind the smoke and mirrors may prove his toughest adversary yet.

Of course Iron Man 3 isn't perfect, but to be far, neither were either of the first two entries. Plotting seems somewhat lopsided, with the most exciting sequences placed at the front end of the film, joined by some poor connecting tissue. Far from fan service, the film nevertheless provides fans with all the beats they have come to expect, along with generous doses of action and some great sequences, including the Mandarin attack on Stark's Malibu mansion.
With three main villains, the film is a bit top heavy in the threat department, stretching the sense of urgency a little thin. Arguably the most imposing villain, Eric Savin (James Badge Dale) is given the least screen time and should be a thrilling and threatening force, but I don't feel this was properly conveyed. Ben Kingsley plays a great villain with a twist of his own, although some fans may be disappointed that it deviates significantly from the comics and perhaps could have been better utilized in a more accurate depiction in a future entry - if indeed that is Marvel's intention.
At this point, fans have a good grasp of Downey Jr's portrayal of Stark and he's certainly in fine form here. With significant stretches of armor-less Stark, Iron Man 3 allows the character to evolve a little more than previous entries, padding the character with slightly more depth than the fast quips and self-assured one liners have previously allowed. Gwyneth Paltrow isn't given much to do this time around, featuring much less screen time than Iron Man 2, although she's finally given an overdue hero moment of her own.
Overall, Marvel and Disney have done a great job in transitioning Iron Man back to a standalone adventure and rather than simply climaxing with The Avengers. I'm now even more excited for where an increasingly confident Marvel will take their crisscrossing characters next.
Video
Iron Man 3 is presented in the original aspect ratio of 2.39:1, encoded with AVC MPEG-4 compression. Note that the cover erroneously lists a 1.78:1 aspect ratio.
Finished in a 4K digital intermediate, it's no surprise that this 2K down convert is no slouch - in fact, it's one of the finest transfers to grace a Blu-ray this year.
Despite a change in cinematographers, with John Toll replacing Matthew Libatique, Iron Man 3 features solid visual continuity with its predecessors. As such, bright and bold colors are the order of the day, although much of the films climax is played out in darkness. Throughout this, there was no problem with black crush or shadow detail, which brim with fine textures.
Filmed predominantly with the digital Arri Alexa camera system, the digital transfer has never touched celluloid, making the issue of film to video artifacts a moot point, as well as video artifacts due to a consistently high bitrate and careful encoding. Overall, there's little that I can point to as being problematic, indeed there is much to be pleased about.

Iron Man 3 is presented in DTS HD Master Audio 7.1 at 24 bits.
Iron Man 3 hits Blu-ray with the same level of bombast that I can recall from the theatrical showing this year, which I've no doubt will be a prime example of demo-worthy audio in times to come. Standout sequences include the helicopter attack on the Stark mansion and the climactic waterfront fight out, which brim with exceptional surround directionality, along with strong resonating bass performance. But even when the pace takes a breather, a 360 degree sound field is always in play.
For such a large budgeted picture, the original sound design hasn't had much in the way of shortcuts, so the lack of audio sync issues or dialogue intelligibility is a positive. The Blu-ray encode doesn't introduce any nasties into the process.

I can smell a re-release in the wings! Similar to the light collection assembled for what has become the third highest grossing motion picture of all time, The Avengers, Marvel and Disney have released a rather disappointingly light collection of supplements, which whilst are flashy and appealingly created, do little to delve into the films production on any level. Regardless, let's take a look at what is here.
First up is the Audio Commentary by director Shane Black and writer Drew Pearce, the former of which offers numerous trivia tidbits throughout, whilst the latter provides the comic riffs. The camaraderie and short hand between the two is readily apparent.
The Marvel One-Shot short films have fast become fan favorites, and the latest; Agent Carter, will be no different. Set one year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, actress Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Agent Carter, who finds herself an active participant in the 1940's pre-cursor to S.H.I.E.L.D, which I understand will dovetail nicely with the forthcoming Captain America sequel The Winter Soldier. Props to Disney for finishing the short in theatrical quality 1080p and 5.1 sound.
Next is the 10 minute long Iron Man 3 Unmasked Featurette which breathlessly provides brief behind the scenes snippets alongside interview segments for most of the key sequences throughout. It's certainly flashy and well-edited, but I yearned for a much more detailed piece, which we simply don't get. The Deconstructing the Scene: Attack on Air Force One Featurette utilizes animatic footage and background plates, coupled with on-set footage to illustrate the creation of the thrilling set piece.
Next up are a number of short Deleted Scenes which were probably wisely excised, along with a four minute long, and crushingly un-funny Gag Reel.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Marvel Blu-ray without some form of advertisement for the next feature film release and they haven't passed up the opportunity. The Exclusive Look Behind the Scenes of Thor: The Dark World Featurette is slightly misleading, consisting of little more than select scenes from the already released trailer, along with talking head footage of how great it will be. Still, I'm excited - so I guess, 'mission accomplished'.

White House Down (2013) Cinema Review

While turned down for the job due to his dearth of qualifications, Cale takes the opportunity of a White House tour, which soon takes a turn for the worse when the nearby Capitol building is destroyed and the White House put into lock down. When the building is attacked by mercenaries, assisted by a devious insider, soon the only man that may be able to assist the leader of the free world (Jamie Foxx) is the one that just got turned down...

Director Roland Emmerich is either loved or reviled and never in between. Whilst I concede that his best work is made in conjunction with his previous producing partner Dean Devlin (Independence Day and StarGate), I always enjoy his keen visual sense and penchant for explosive, over the top action. In this regard, White House Down proves no different to other entries in his filmography.

Seagate Desktop 2TB SSHD (ST2000DX001) Review
Introduction

Now that most of the initial hype around the Laptop Thin SSHD has passed, I thought it was only right to bring our readers the first official review of the Seagate Desktop SSHD in the 2TB capacity.
The desktop variant of the SSHD combines the best features of both the Laptop SSHD and Desktop HDD, where we have the same 8GB of NAND flash found in the SSHDs of today, together with the full 7200RPM spindle speed of the Desktop HDD.
Initial capacities of the Desktop SSHD start at 1TB with an additional 2TB capacity available, but I wouldn't put it past Seagate to launch a 4TB monster in the near future.
Specifications, Pricing and Availability

Average data rate is listed at 158 MB/s from the platters and 190 MB/s from the cache with a 4/2 head to platter ratio for the 2TB model and 2/1 head to platter ratio for the 1TB model. Typical operating power is listed at 6.7 watts with an idle power consumption of 3.3 watts.
Pricing of the 2TB Seagate Desktop SSHD is set at $139.99, while the 1TB model is available for $99.99. Each drive is covered by Seagate's three-year warranty.

Micron P420m 1.4TB PCIe Enterprise SSD Review
Introduction

While the high-performance segment addressed by the P320h is large, the mainstream market is exponentially larger. Many might even argue that the P320h was the right solution for the market at the time, when many mainstream users were still wary of flash solutions. With its extreme endurance and high tolerance for heavy workloads, the P320h proved that bulletproof solutions for flash acceleration could gain significant penetration into the datacenter.
The flash market has matured considerably since then. The rate of adoption is staggering and at times the fabs cannot even produce NAND fast enough to satiate demand. If ever there were a time for a low cost solution that can deliver tremendous performance in a wide variety of use cases, the time is now.
The P420m looks to provide this low-cost MLC solution with higher capacities, yet also provide tremendous performance for the mainstream market. The common use-cases for the P420m run the gamut of mainstream applications from caching and OLTP to media streaming and web acceleration.
Micron leverages their vertical integration by utilizing their own 25nm NAND, DRAM, and Micron-developed application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The card comes in two form factors, the typical PCIe Gen2 x8 half-height half-length (HHHL), and a 2.5" form factor.
The slim profile of the HHHL P420m is designed for use in rackmount servers and is available in capacities of 700GB and 1.4TB. Both capacity points provide up to 3 GB/s of sequential read and up to 750,000 random read IOPS. The trade-off in the move to MLC is in write performance; the 700GB P420m offers 50,000 random write IOPS and 600 MB/s in sequential write. The 1.4TB unit provides 95,000 random write IOPS and 630 MB/s of sequential write speed.
The 2.5" P420m is the world's first PCIe Gen2 x8 MLC NAND PCIe SSD available in a SFF. These SSDs are hot pluggable and designed for utilization in the front bay of a server, thus reducing downtime and providing easy accessibility. The 2.5" comes in capacities of 350GB and 700GB, with sequential read performance up to 1.8 GB/s and random read performance topping out at 430,000 IOPS.
Endurance is always a concern in the datacenter, and is especially relevant with MLC solutions. To provide increased endurance, Micron implanted their XPERT (eXtended Performance and Enhanced Reliability Technologies) suite into a PCIe card for the first time with the P420m. This mix of technologies increases SSD performance and reliability, most notably through a RAID 5-like redundancy scheme (RAIN). We will cover this in detail in the following pages.
The XPERT suite provides an endurance of 5PB for the 700GB and 10PB for the 1.4TB, in stark contrast to the 50PB with the P320h. The lower endurance is enough for four drive fills per day for five years. The P420m also brings the inclusion of power hold-up capacitors as an additional layer of data protection in the event of power fail, a feature that was noticeably absent on the P320h.

WD Re (WD4000FYYZ) 4TB Enterprise HDD Review
Introduction

The RE fits in the middle of the WD datacenter product stack, with the Xe and Se bookends delivering different levels of service. The Xe provides the ultimate in performance with a SAS interface and 10,000 RPM's on tap. The Se is a 7,200 RPM HDD for less demanding workloads, delivering the incrementally lower performance via a SATA connection. The Re, or RAID Edition, HDD features higher resilience and performance than the Se in spite of the utilizing the same 7,200 RPM spindle speed.
HDD failures are a constant reality in the datacenter, and with some datacenters supporting tens of thousands of servers per location, and some housing far more, this constant stream of failures requires intense micromanagement. Workers spend countless man-hours replacing failed drives, and RAID rebuild periods strangle server performance and bring the threat of downtime. Once removed, failed drives are typically physically destroyed to protect customer or company data, adding yet another layer of expenditure to an already expensive process.
The Re brings a mix of different features that combine to deliver the higher speed and durability required in datacenter applications with heavy write workloads. The Re is designed to handle up to 550TB per year. The inclusion of a SAS interface also widens the spectrum of capabilities for the Re series. The SAS interface provides HA (High Availability) full duplex features, such as failover and multipath, and the robust SAS feature set.
The higher reliability of the Re, which features an MTBF of 1.2 million hours, helps to reduce the never-ending drive replacement cycle. While high-capacity drives from the competition also offer impressive MTBF specifications, the Re really distances itself from the competition with an industry leading 10E16 non-recoverable read errors per bits read. This is a 100x improvement over other drives with a 10E15 rating.
The Re also features a dual-core processor, with twice the processing power to boost performance. The SATA version features a healthy 64MB of cache, while the SAS version utilizes 32MB of cache. This combination combines to deliver up to 171 MB/s of sequential throughput for SATA, and 182 MB/s for the SAS version.
RAID-specific time-limited error recovery (TLER) prevents the drive from dropping in a RAID array due to an extended hard drive error-recovery. Dual actuator technology provides precise placement of the head over data tracks, while StableTrac secures both ends of the motor shaft to reduce vibration in multi-drive deployments. The WD Re series also has SED offerings with AES 256-bit encryption and Crypto Erase functionality for users with more stringent security demands. The SED drives support the T13 Sanitize command and the ATA Password support of Secure Erase Unit (SEU).
Reliability is key, and WD subjects their enterprise drives to at least five million hours of functional testing, and over 20 million hours of interoperability testing. Each individual drive also experiences an extended burn-in with thermal cycling to ensure reliability. The intense qualification and testing leads to a five-year warranty for the Re series of drives.

Cooler Master N600 Mid-Tower Chassis Review
Introduction

That same sense of chassis design has been enlarged into a mid-tower design, but keeps the same styling of the N200 on the outside. This means room for larger components, more expansion slots, and this time you get a large tinted window on the side of the chassis for your viewing pleasure.
There is another idea that Cooler Master was going for in this newer version. They have the idea that this chassis needed to be designed for water cooling as well. Therefore, this design incorporates three locations to add in radiators, two of which can be dual 120 radiators. On top of that they have obviously increased the size of the chassis, so now the ATX board owners can enjoy the N series as well.
Between the two designs of the N200 and the N600 we are about to see, there is also a mid-range version of these designs that you will find in the N400. The N600 is the top of the line in this series of cases, and from what I saw with the N200, random things like bumped out door panels and hard drive storage have been addressed and improved.
In almost every way, the N600 is superior to both the N400 and N200, but let's get right down to it and see if the N600 from Cooler Master is worthy of your money over all the other mid-tower offerings on the market.

PNY Prevail 240GB SSD Review
Introduction

Intel discontinued 25nm flash months ago so any drive with 25nm flash from a retail site is special. There are a few examples out there, but the known 5K P/E cycle flash drives are getting harder to find and very expensive when you track them down. Intel's 520 Series 240GB is a good example. At one point the drive sold for as low as $199.99 on sale, but the price is now $259.99 at Newegg.
That's over $1 per GB and many would feel that's unacceptable given the prices of Samsung's 840, Crucial's M500 and other low priced SSDs. If you follow TweakTown's SSD reviews, then you know that 25nm IMFT flash is golden compared to new 20nm flash coming out of the Intel / Micron fabs.
We suspect all of the 3K P/E cycle 25nm flash is long gone and the only 25nm left in warehouses is 5K and 10K P/E cycle flash. Since the flash is now discontinued, a SSD manufacturer wouldn't create a new product SKU since the production run would be quite limited. What manufacturers will do is upgrade products with 3K P/E cycle flash to 5K P/E cycle and continue their production of existing SKUs until the 25nm well runs dry.
That's what we think PNY has done with the Prevail and we have the drive to prove it.

The preliminary vote tally shows that the transaction was approved by the holders of a majority of Dell's outstanding shares, as required by Delaware law. In addition, the tally shows that the transaction was approved by the holders of a majority of Dell's shares voting for or against the matter, excluding shares held by Mr. Dell, certain of his related family trusts, Dell's Board of Directors and certain members of its management, as separately required under the merger agreement.
"I am pleased with this outcome and am energized to continue building Dell into the industry's leading provider of scalable, end-to-end technology solutions," said Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell. AMD-Adobe Collaboration Unlocks Outstanding Creative Workflows for Video Pros
AMD today announced that its collaboration with Adobe has reached a new milestone in the drive to deliver faster and more sophisticated professional video workflows. The two companies' leadership in OpenCL acceleration means that video and film professionals, as well as enthusiasts, can take full advantage of the massively parallel compute power of AMD APUs, Radeon graphics, and AMD FirePro professional graphics in their everyday and more compute-intense workloads.

"AMD and Adobe are answering the call of creative professionals working in a wide range of workflows and environments," said Steve Belt, corporate vice president, Strategic Alliances & Platform Enablement, AMD. "By working together using open standards, we are tapping AMD's impressive multi-core and parallel processing capacity to provide the accelerated performance needed to bring a new class of breakthrough software tools to Adobe Creative Cloud users. This makes it possible for pros to confidently tackle projects at every level, whether the final destination is a smartphone, 4K projection, or anything in between."
Today's announcement builds on developments that were revealed by AMD and Adobe at NAB 2013 and received enthusiastically by users in June 2013. At that time the companies delivered enhanced OpenCL support through the Adobe Mercury Playback Engine, which enables professionals to optimize their Adobe Premiere Pro CC workflows by providing the acceleration needed for real-time effects, color grading, multi-format and compositing support.
"We are in the business of empowering all creative professionals, whether the project is the next global blockbuster or the passion of a lone independent producer," said Simon Williams, director of Strategic Relations at Adobe. "The team at AMD shares that vision with Adobe and it is reflected in the workflows they have helped make available to Adobe Creative Cloud users. The highly productive collaboration between Adobe and AMD continues to deliver tremendous benefits to the creative community at a remarkable pace."
Attendees at IBC 2013 will see further demonstrations highlighting Adobe innovations that use OpenCL acceleration to benefit from the power provided by AMD graphics processors, including
- Advanced features in Adobe Premiere Pro CC: OpenCL-enabled acceleration yields a smoother, more fluid experience when using the new professional features in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. OpenCL makes it possible to balance the tasks between CPUs and GPUs for optimal performance.
- Streamlined workflow with Adobe SpeedGrade CC: The new Direct Link Color Pipeline in SpeedGrade enables users to open Adobe Premiere Pro CC projects directly in SpeedGrade to do color grading and then go directly back to Adobe Premiere Pro CC for additional edits. With the ability to also playback and execute enhancements on all OpenCL-accelerated edits and effects, this streamlined workflow eliminates time-consuming intermediary steps of rendering out the Adobe Premiere Pro project and then importing the flattened file. The new Lumetri deep color engine is now optimized using OpenCL acceleration to support real-time performance within SpeedGrade.
- Expanded Adobe Media Encoder CC functionality: Now Adobe Media Encoder CC can provide users with a more streamlined workflow by directly opening Premiere Pro projects. OpenCL enables Adobe Media Encoder CC users to now leverage the Mercury Playback Engine, independent of Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and take advantage of AMD GPU acceleration to reduce CPU demand and enable faster transcoding for all of their media conversion needs. This is further enhanced by the ability to apply effects, including color grading, from within Adobe Media Encoder CC rather than having to go to Adobe Premiere Pro.
