Deal of the week: Graphics cards, memory, and games
Writing out these deal posts in prose is getting pretty boring, so I think I'll go with our simplified list format this week. The list format has it all: bullet points, bolded product names, and handy links to the latest bargains we've come across. What's not to like?
This week, we've got a mix of hardware and PC game ...

POV parkour video brings Mirror's Edge to the real world
A prequel to free-running classic Mirror's Edge is in development. The game promises an "open-world adventure," but it's early in development and probably won't be released for a year or two. In the meantime, you can get your parkour fix by bounding around town—or you can save yourself from a lot of pain and injury by simply watching someone else do it. The folks at Ampisound have put together an epic POV video that, ahem, faithfully channels Mirror's Edge.

The SSD Endurance Experiment: 22TB update
Flash memory has limited write endurance.
So do the SSDs based on it. How many writes can modern drives take
before they expire, and what happens to them as the flash wears out?
We're trying to find out by testing a selection of SSDs to failure. You
can read all the nitty-gritty details about the experiment in this introductory article. Today, we're checking in on our subjects after 22TB of writes.
22TB might seem like an odd place to pause our testing, but it's a close match for the endurance specification attached to the Intel 335 Series. That drive is rated for 20GB of writes per day for three years. Do the math.
The Intel 335 Series is one of only two drives in our lineup with a published endurance rating. The other, the Kingston HyperX 3K, is supposed to withstand 192TB of writes. Since it'll take a while to push into triple-terabyte digits, we've decided to stop at 22TB before moving on.
Unfortunately—or
fortunately, depending on your perspective—we have little to report at
this juncture. Anvil's endurance test wrote 22TB to each SSD, and all
the drives passed the benchmark's built-in data integrity tests without
issues. The SSDs didn't reach ...

20-inch Panasonic tablet has 4K resolution, GeForce graphics
As device makers seem to be focusing on smaller tablets, Panasonic is moving in the opposite direction. The company has unviled a jumbo tablet with a 20" screen and a 4K display resolution. The Toughpad 4K UT-MB5's 15:10 aspect ratio is a little unusual, but the 3840x2560 resolution adds up to 9.8 megapixels—more than the 8.3 megapixels offered by 4K displays with more typical 3840x2160 layouts. When you factor in the screen's dimensions, the pixel density works out to 230 PPI.

NYT, Guardian: NSA has backdoors in commercial encryption software
Thinking of using encryption software to foil the NSA's eavesdropping programs? Well, according to the latest leak from whistleblower Edward Snowden, that may be a waste of time. As the Guardian reports,
the leak shows both the NSA and its British counterpart, the GCHQ, have
"successfully cracked much of the online encryption relied upon by
hundreds of millions of people to protect the privacy of their personal
data, online transactions and emails."
The Guardian article goes into a lot of highly depressing detail, but ...

Asus' X79-Deluxe motherboard reviewed
When Intel introduces a new generation of CPUs, the chips usually come with an updated core-logic platform. That platform is dutifully adopted by motherboard makers, which roll out fresh models to meet the latest CPUs. The recent Ivy Bridge-E launch didn't fit the pattern, though. Intel's new family of high-end desktop processors arrived solo, without a new platform attached.
On the one hand, that's pretty awesome. Folks who bought X79 motherboards for Sandy Bridge-E a couple years ago should be little more than a firmware ...
