Canada's Fairfax offers to acquire BlackBerry in $4.7 billion deal
A consortium led by Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings has offered to acquire struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry. The proposed deal, which is supported by BlackBerry's board of directors, values the company at $4.7 billion.

Oracle makes its big data push even bigger
Oracle is doubling down on big data with a number of new products and enhancements to existing ones, in hopes that customers looking to analyze massive amounts of information for business insights will in turn invest further in Oracle. For one thing, Oracle's Big Data Appliance now features "enterprise-class" security for Hadoop, the open-source data processing framework, Oracle announced Monday during the OpenWorld conference in San Francisco.

A new version of the Apache Struts development framework released Friday fixes two problems that had developers worried. Apache Struts is a popular open-source framework for developing Java-based Web applications and is maintained by the Apache Software Foundation. Offshore IT service providers are the leading users of L-1 visas
The IEEE-USA is calling for reform of the L-1 visa program following the release of a government report that identified offshore IT service providers as the biggest users of the visa. In the report, the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that some of the L-1 visa program's rules are vague and the program is vulnerable to fraud and abuse.

LinkedIn denies harvesting user email accounts without permission
LinkedIn denied over the weekend charges that the company breaks into the email accounts of its members without permission to harvest contacts' addresses. A class action complaint by four users has charged the professional networking site with hacking into their external email accounts and downloading addresses of their contacts for monetary gain by repeatedly promoting its services to these contacts.

Infor pins ERP growth on user-friendly design revamp
Infor CEO Charles Phillips has made plenty of changes at the ERP (enterprise resource planning) software vendor since taking the top job after a long run as co-president of Oracle, and one of the most significant is a major investment in modern user interface design. Phillips created an internal design agency called Hook & Loop, which works closely with Infor application development teams. Now he's gone a step further, naming Hook & Loop's director Marc Scibelli to the new post of chief creative officer.

Internet threat level rises on expanded IE attacks
The Internet Storm Center on Saturday boosted its threat level to "Yellow," indicating a "significant new threat" to Internet users from attacks exploiting an unpatched vulnerability in all versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser. "The Internet Storm Center is beginning to see increased evidence of exploits in the wild regarding Microsoft Security Advisory 2887505," the security organization said on its website. "Accordingly, we're moving the InfoCon up to Yellow."

German hackers say old technique can bypass Apple's Touch ID
Apple's Touch ID authentication system can be defeated using a well-honed technique for creating a latex copy of someone's fingerprint, according to a German hacking group. The Chaos Computer Club (CCC), which hosts an annual hacking conference and publishes computer security research, wrote on its blog that their experiment shows that fingerprint authentication "should be avoided."

Oracle's Ellison promises 'ungodly' database speed with new in-memory option
Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has thrown his gauntlet down in the burgeoning market for in-memory computing, announcing a new option for Oracle's flagship database at the OpenWorld conference in San Francisco.The in-memory option delivers "ungodly" performance improvements, Ellison claimed, and targets both transactional and analytic workloads."When you put data in memory, one of the reasons you do that is to make it go faster," Ellison said Sunday.

BlackBerry rescinds BBM's release after false start
