Take a world-class science fiction writer in 1964 and ask him to write down what he envisions for the future 50 years hence. Isaac Asimov's predictions have some uncanny accuracy and are pretty amazing.
Here's the thing about science fiction: It's often more about the present than the future. Unencumbered by the details of today's world, science fiction can make audiences think about modern issues without getting bogged down with the details and prejudices that might make them less open-minded.

MS Unveils New Xbox Live Rewards Program
Microsoft has revealed the new version of the company's Xbox Live Rewards program this weekend. The new program replaced the old point system with an actual currency for use in the Xbox Store.
All rewards members had their pending points deposited into their accounts on August 7th so no rewards would be lost. The new program was due to start on September 1st and Microsoft has kept their promise.

Sony announced the formation of a new division concerned with porting games for Sony consoles. The new division will be called Third-Party Production, to be headed up by Gio Corsi, past lead producer for LucasArts.

Microsoft Will Still Patch Windows XP for a Select Group
Talk about sending out mixed messages: While Microsoft is attempting to scare everyone away from XP and into the arms of Windows 7 or 8, the company will continue to offer Custom Support after regular company support is terminated for anyone willing to pay big bucks for the privilege of receiving patches and fixes to keep the system safe, enabling them to remain with Windows XP.
Those patches will come from a program called "Custom Support," an after-retirement contract designed for very large customers who have not, for whatever reason, moved on from an older OS.

A $130 Billion deal between Verizon and Vodafone for shares of Verizon Wireless has been approved by each company and finalization could come as early as Monday if approved by both boards according to sources. The deal would buy back Vodafone's share of Verizon Wireless, giving Verizon total ownership.
Verizon has for years sought to buy out Vodafone's 45 percent stake Verizon Wireless, which is the No. 1 wireless provider in the United States and the fastest-growing and most profitable part of Verizon.

Microsoft pulled a surprise announcement on Friday evening concerning its highest-level certification program. The Microsoft Certified Masters program is to be shut down.
"The truth is, for as successful as the program is for those who are in it, it reaches only a tiny proportion of the overall community. Only a few hundred people have attained the certification in the last few years, far fewer than we would have hoped".

Google Acquires Smart Watch Maker WIMM Labs
The smartwatch field is beginning to become crowded of late. Google announced on Friday that the smart watch technology company, WIMM Labs, had been acquired by Google, but declined to elaborate the purpose of the acquisition. It really doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to connect the dots.
The team, which had released a developer version of its watch technology, is now said to be part of Google's Android team, sources said.

AMD and Mixamo have announced a partnership to launch Face Plus plug-in to bring studio quality facial animation and real time motion capture to desktop PCs.
Capturing the intricacies of an actor's face and translating that data into animation typically requires expensive hardware and powerful processors, however, keeping the technology out of reach of smaller developers - something AMD is looking to solve.
