NAND flash vendors preparing for a world of 3D NAND chips
Prepare yourselves for another dimension of NAND flash storage, with Samsung Electronics, Toshiba and Micron Technology all recently talking about their 3D NAND flash memory developments.

South Korean-based giant Samsung is said to be ahead of the pack in terms of the development of 3D NAND flash memory, with Samsung claiming it has begun mass production of 3D NAND flash for consumer electronics and enterprise applications such as embedded NAND storage and SSDs this month. The South Korean giant has a new 12-inch fab in Xian, northwestern China, which will also take care of the 3D NAND production.
Samsung is also said to run the new NAND flash fab sometime next year. Toshiba on the other hand, recently started construction on a new fab at its Yokkaichi operations based in Japan, with the new capacity expected to arrive in summer 2014. This factory will produce 3D NAND memory, as well as chips based on more advanced node technologies. The Japan-based Toshiba is expected to reach mass production of 3D NAND flash in 2015, which is an estimate according to industry sources. Toshiba will is reportedly already delivering samples of 3D NAND.
Finally, we have Micron, whose CEO said that the company would start handing out 3D NAND flash samples to customers in the first quarter of next year.

RumorTT: Windows 9 and 10 specs leak as 8.1 nears retail launch
Everyone loves a good tech rumor, right? More so, everyone loves a good tech rumor regarding future releases of Microsoft's Windows operating system. Today, website WinBeta has managed to beat all the odds and gain insider information on what we might expect to see in Windows 9 as well as Windows 10. Of course, with Windows 8.1 not even officially released to the public, it would be best to take everything you're about to read with a very fine grain of salt.

"According to WZOR, Windows 9 will be similar to the desktop OS we know today. He claims that Microsoft is planning to bring the old Aero interface back, but not as we all know it. That's all he teases regarding the Aero interface, but he also claims that Windows 9 will make an appearance in a years time, much sooner than expected," reads the WinBeta article.
He goes on to state that Windows 10 could arrive in conceptual form as early as September 1, 2013, but again, remember that this is an unconfirmed rumor from an unvetted source. No other details were given on what Windows 10 will be like, but I'm sure as the coming months press on we will hear more.

Samsung begins teasing BlackBerry Messenger on its Galaxy devices
We've known that BlackBerry Messenger is making its way to Android for quite some time now, and while we had hoped for an OS-wide launch sometime in July, it appears that the first Android devices to get BBM will be of Samsung origin. Earlier today, website CrackBerry spotted a teaser ad that was posted on both YouTube and Samsung's Ghana Facebook page.

So what does this mean? I think we may see the app officially announced by Samsung or BlackBerry at the IDC trade show in Berlin, Germany, next week, and with a working port for Android-based Samsung devices now in existence, it is only a matter of time before BlackBerry Messenger is in the Google Play Store for all Android devices. That is, unless BlackBerry did something stupid like sign an exclusivity deal with Samsung, but then again this is BlackBerry were talking about and weirder things have happened in the past.

They simultaneously took a series of non-gaming tests, with the researchers discovering that the subjects who chose to play the click-heavy SarCraft performed at a higher rate in cognitive flexibility tasks than those who chose to play The Sims, which is a more sedate experience. Researcher Brian Glass said: "Previous research has demonstrated that action video games, such as Halo, can speed up decision making. The current work finds that real-time strategy games can promote our ability to think on-the-fly and learn from past mistakes."

Intel DC S3700 Enterprise SSD 8-Drive and 4-Drive RAID Report
Introduction

The problem lies in the variable performance delivered by these solutions, one Chris Ramseyer and I highlighted in our article and video Consumer vs. Enterprise SSD Performance Analysis. In our testing, we found that some client SSDs suffer from I/O 'outliers' that were in the same latency range as those delivered by a 15,000 RPM HDD. This highlights the fact that storage performance is not always defined by the 'average' results posted in typical test results, and choosing the wrong solution can have disastrous results.
By monitoring the performance of the storage with greater granularity, we can expose the flaws that plague client-side and less robust enterprise storage solutions. The Intel DC S3700 strives to provide a level of consistency unmatched by many other SSDs, and the challenge for Intel became how to spread that message. One of the best solutions for highlighting performance variability is by measuring performance in one-second intervals. At TweakTown we had already begun testing enterprise storage products in this manner, and the Intel DC S3700 spawned very similar testing by other hardware review sites.
The focus on performance consistency from Intel has brought one of the crucial aspects of storage performance into the limelight; predictable performance. One of the major motivators behind creating an SSD with predictable performance is the need to feed I/O to applications in a consistent manner. Performance variability can rob applications of performance. Individual 'hangs' and lags from outlying I/O can significantly affect application performance, simply because applications are forced into waiting for the next I/O to complete.
Outliers can rob applications of their performance, especially when there is significant variability. In enterprise scenarios, these poorly performing applications can result in the need for more resources to make up the difference. When placed into massive datacenters, the extra servers needed to compensate for poor performance can create tremendous cost.
Another of the greatest aspects of the Intel DC S3700 is the performance consistency should equate to large gains in performance in RAID applications. RAID arrays can only read and write only as fast as the slowest device in the array. If any single SSD in the array experiences significant variability, it will slow down the entire array. Since the speed of the array only operates as fast as the slowest I/O, several SSDs in an array with poor performance consistency can magnify the problem. In effect, the number of poorly performing SSDs in the RAID array multiplies the amount of outlying I/O.
We are accustomed to reading over-the-top RAID reviews with insane numbers of SSDs, and have been guilty of writing them in the past. Expect us to write more of them in the future as well, we have some very exciting new RAID testing coming up.
However, in typical deployments, SSDs are used as high performance tiers for hot data tiers or caching applications. Not every application requires millions of IOPS, and today we are focusing on the performance of a realistic deployment of four and eight Intel DC S3700 SSDs in an enterprise environment.

SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive Review

The SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive is slim ultra-portable storage solution targeted at smartphone and tablet users that enjoy the ability to store, share and stream content on the go. In addition to the SD card slot, the SanDisk Wireless Media Drive comes with either 32GB or 64GB of embedded memory, and similar to the Wireless Flash Drive, the Media Drive creates its own wireless network with a range up to 150 feet. SanDisk warranties the Wireless Media Drive for a period of one year.

Upon receiving our review sample of the Wireless Media Drive, we first had to charge it, a process that took about 2.5 hours with the included AC adapter. Taking the device down to the 10 percent seen in this review took about seven hours. The SanDisk Wireless Media Drive does deliver similar functionality when compared to its sibling product such as the Wireless Flash Drive, with the added benefit of embedded memory and the additional ability to augment the memory size by adding a SD card.
The Android application we used on our tablet worked quite well, but it was puzzling to see two separate apps used within one product family. However, streaming video was no issue and the device was able to maintain the signal, even when I moved outdoors.
Pricing of the SanDisk Wireless Media Drive in the 64GB capacity is set at $99.99 and $79.99 for the 32GB capacity. Interestingly enough, this puts the SanDisk Media Drive is perfect position, with similar products such as the Kingston MobileLite coming in at $69.99 as an empty device.

ICYDOCK EZ-Dock MB981U3S Storage Docking Station Review

The MB981U3S is the latest in ICYDOCK's EZ-DOCK line-up of, you guessed it: docking stations. The ICYDOCK MB981U3S is single bay docking station that offers dual connectivity through eSATA at 3Gbps and USB 3.0 at 5Gbps. With support for both 2.5" and 3.5" SSDs and HDDs, the EZ-Dock employs a unique two part dust cover to keep the internals clean. ICYDOCK warranties the EZ-Dock for a period of three years.

To test the capabilities of the ICYDOCK EZ-Dock, we utilized our Corsair Neutron 256GB SSD on our Intel Z77 chipset based motherboard. Benchmarks of choice were ATTO Disk Benchmark, CrystalDiskMark, along with our custom DiskBench testing.

When we get right down to brass tax, you will find that docking stations are never the most glamorous storage solutions. In fact, most docks that are pushed out these days share the same features and in most cases use the same underlying components. Simply put, devices like docks are meant to be a quick option when you need to throw a drive in to retrieve data. So, that leaves most users just wanting good build quality and the very best in performance. These two categories is a place where ICYDOCK has always tended to excel.
When first putting my hands on the EZ-Dock, I could tell there was some thought put into the design. I really enjoyed that the eject lever actually worked, even on 2.5" drives, and the uniquely designed dust cover did not negatively affect putting drives in. Additionally, the power button worked without a hitch, like a well-oiled machine.
Performance of the unit was on par with what I expected. Now, we didn't set any records today, but 200 MB/s isn't anything to be ashamed of and is certainly plenty for most users.
At the time of writing, I was able to find the ICYDOCK MB981U3S at many online retailers for a price of $49.99, a price that makes this a full $20 cheaper than the comparable BlacX 5G from Thermaltake, and a true bargain for anyone in the market for a simple, straight forward storage docking station.

Divekick PS Vita Review

Shortly after the Kickstarter went live, it disappeared, with the announcement that Iron Galaxy Studios were going to take the concept and run with it. Divekick is not meant to be a serious fighting game, but it contains serious elements, and in many ways, it can be hard to know at times as to whether it wants to be a proper fighting game or one that is a parody, and that is one of its core problems.
The main gameplay of Divekick completely removes most of the complexity associated with fighting games. In fact, you only need to learn two buttons. You do not directly control your character, but instead only control when the character jumps either high, backwards or dives foot first towards the opponent.
Each round lasts a maximum of 20 seconds, with most significantly less than that, giving the game a very snappy feel. Although every so often in the single player, a story cut scene will play, which takes you out of the game somewhat and really breaks the snappy feel the rest of the game builds so well.

There are other parodies, but we won't ruin those because some of them are truly laugh out loud funny. However, there are times where the game reminds you that it is trying to be serious. For example, in the options, you can set a maximum ping and GGPO frames, something that will be a completely foreign language to most casual players.
And this is where Divekick to a degree is a failure. This is not really a game that can be enjoyed by a casual player (to the degree others can) that has no idea about the elite fighting game tournaments and people involved in them. Many of the characters are based on people prominent in that arena such as Markman, the community manager from Mad Catz, and S-Kill, who is clearly based on Seth Killian, one of the more prominent fighting game people in the United States.
The other characters are generally based on parodies from other popular fighting games such as Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom. To get the most out of this game, you really need to be in on the jokes, and whilst we were, not many people just buying something on PSN will be.
However, the game does exhibit a level of depth that was unexpected, and is not a game that can be completely mastered within a night. Each of the characters has a special move set and as well as this also dives and jumps with different angles. Just like a typical fighting game, it is likely you will find a character you like and will stick to that character. Also some of the characters have moves which go against the rest of the game where they will create lightning by dive kicking for example, as opposed to actually just hitting the other character. Again this adds to the challenge of the game.

Multiplayer is where you will gain the most value from this game, and if you have no interest in playing fighting games online, this really isn't a game you should buy.

Divekick is an interesting game and actually we found it somewhat a difficult game to review. We actually enjoyed it, but we know we enjoyed it a lot more than a typical person off the street would, because we could pick out most of the in-jokes present in the game.
If you are knowledgeable about the fighting tournament community or really just want a crazy fighting game to play, then this is the one for you. You may enter it thinking it will be a throw away game that you can be done with in a night, but the opposite is true. Divekick has an unexpected level of depth that may see it become popular for months to come.

Samsung Introduces 21.5-inch Zero Client Cloud Display
Samsung Electronics America, Inc. is exhibiting its latest virtualization products and solutions at VMworld 2013, an annual conference for IT professionals focusing on virtualization and cloud computing. Samsung will be showcasing a number of virtualization products for the first time in the U.S. at VMworld, booth #1729, from August 25-29. These include the new NB-NH Cloud Stand, the all-new 21.5" NC221 and the rest of Samsung's 2013 NC Series zero client lineup of cloud displays, equipped with the new 2nd generation Teradici chipset (Tera2) processor for lower energy costs and greater power efficiency.

NB-NH Cloud Stand - Built for Performance, Adaptability and Affordability
Samsung's NB-NH is the world's first Tera2 zero client cloud display, enabling users to transform business monitors into a VDI access device by integrating the latest VDI endpoint technology into the base of the monitor stand. With VDI intelligence and I/O built into the monitor stand, users can free their working environments of bulky workstations and modular desktop appliances.
With an embedded Tera2 chipset, the NB-NH requires no external hard drive or chipset for cloud computing, while also helping users achieve higher performance with greater efficiency. This state-of-the-art zero client technology has been improved to deliver up to 5 times the VDI pixel performance over the previous generation, lower power consumption which reduces energy costs, stronger security with AES 256-bit encryption and less bandwidth usage via client-side caching and enhanced compression.
Built-in PCoIP technology allows users to seamlessly connect to their organization's business cloud, making user environments easier to deploy, maintain and manage, while being less vulnerable to security risks. This makes the NB-NH ideal for business IT environments delivering VDI to the desktop from a hosted business cloud, including education (K-12 and university), public sector, federal government, corporate, banking/finance and healthcare environments.
The NB-NH Cloud Stand enables businesses to simplify and secure their network endpoints with desktop intelligence baked in to the design. SoC (System on Chip) technology is used to reduce the desktop attack surface while almost eliminating the need for client-side administration. Since most software is remote, and critical data is centralized, time and money spent on managing the user environment is vastly reduced.
Samsung's NB-NH Cloud Stand also provides the I/O connections today's business users need. With four integrated USB 2.0 ports, users can connect a wide range of modern USB peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, web cams, smart card or CAC readers, wireless keyboard/mouse and headsets. Integrated stereo speakers offer a more complete, out-of-the-box multimedia experience while preventing unplanned costs for clunky aftermarket sound products.
It is designed to hold virtually any VESA-compatible monitor with dimensions up to 27-inches and weighing up to 14.3 lbs. Industry standard 75mm and 100mm VESA mounting options offer users the modularity required to support their existing monitors or upgrade to a 21.5-inch, 23.6-inch or 27-inch panel.
NC Series Zero Client Cloud Displays - Featuring Tera2 Chipset
Samsung's NC Series zero client lineup is a class of professional-grade monitors specially designed for desktop virtualization and cloud computing. These highly-advanced cloud displays provide integrated connectivity to business clouds via desktop virtualization technology, therefore eliminating the need for a bulky PC with excessive IT administration costs. As sensitive information is centralized and secured in a business cloud, the user environment is easier to deploy, maintain and manage while minimizing exposure to security risks.
Certified for optimal use with VMware ViewTM (VDI Connection Broker), the NC Series cloud displays combine the latest Tera2 chipset with an LED-backlit LCD screen for business-class performance and state-of-the-art picture quality in a highly efficient package.
Benefits of the new Tera2 chipset include:
- Lower energy costs with greater power efficiency
- Up to 5 times the VDI pixel performance over the previous generation chipset
- USB synchronization for webcam support
- Reduction in bandwidth via client-side caching and enhanced compression
- Stronger security with AES 256-bit Encryption for PCoIP communication
Price and Availability
The new NB-NH Cloud Stand and Samsung's 2013 NC Series lineup of zero client products (including the NC191-T, NC221 and NC241-T) can be ordered today. The NB-NH Cloud Stand is priced just under $299 and prices for the 2013 NC Series start at $477.

Today Logitech introduced a mouse that redefines the boundaries of wireless gaming. The Logitech G602 Wireless Gaming Mouse combines 250 hours of non-stop lag-free wireless game play with the precision of Logitech G's exclusive Delta Zero sensor technology to help players dominate boss after boss.

"When I play, I don't want to think about anything other than my game and what my next move will be. When you look at the wireless gaming mice out there though, their primary flaw is the uncertainty of having to interrupt your game to replace batteries. Not anymore," said Ehtisham Rabbani, general manager of the Logitech gaming business group. "We set an outrageous goal, and we hit it. Doubling, tripling or even quadrupling the battery life of ordinary wireless gaming mice wasn't enough. We wanted to bring gamers an innovation that would change the face of wireless gaming forever. With 250 hours of battery life, the G602 does exactly that. It's time for gamers to get real science behind them so something as fundamental as a battery doesn't get in the way of winning."
As the newest mouse in the Logitech G lineup, the Logitech G602 Wireless Gaming Mouse sets a new standard in wireless gaming. Without cords, clutter, or interference, the mouse's lag-free wireless connection and unprecedented battery life allow better, uninterrupted game play. Featuring two modes, Performance and Endurance, the G602 Wireless Gaming mouse delivers 250 hours of non-stop battery life when in full gaming mode - Performance mode - and more than 1400 hours of use in non-gaming mode - or Endurance mode. The mouse features Logitech G exclusive Delta Zero sensor technology that offers high-accuracy cursor control. Plus, it has an ultra durable build with primary mechanical switches rated to a 20 million-click lifespan. And, because it features eleven programmable controls, you can easily master your favorite games by assigning the actions you use most to the buttons you want, using the Logitech Gaming Software. The Logitech G602 Wireless Gaming Mouse is expected to be available for a suggested retail price of $79.99.
And because a game-changing mouse deserves the best possible surface to track on, Logitech G has added two new mouse pads to the lineup that are tested and proven to provide the optimal surface for your Logitech G mouse.
The Logitech G440 Hard Gaming Mouse Pad is ideal for high-DPI gaming, letting you feel the adrenaline of hitting high speeds without spinning out of control. It features a low-friction, fine-textured polypropylene surface that's kept rigid by a high-impact polymer core, giving you consistent tracking performance across the entire pad. This mouse pad was specially crafted to complement Logitech G mouse sensors to further improve their already pinpoint accuracy, enhancing your aim. And, a 3 mm, 3-layer construction keeps it in place during high-intensity gaming. The Logitech G440 Hard Gaming Mouse Pad is expected to be available for a suggested retail price of $29.99.
The Logitech G240 Cloth Gaming Mouse Pad is made for low-DPI gaming. Perfect for gamers who play first-person shooters, its heat-treated textile surface improves gliding consistency by providing just the right amount of friction to make the precise movement and control to elevate your game. The 1 mm rubber base gives the pad rock-solid stability. Like the Logitech G440 Hard Gaming Mouse Pad, this mouse pad was crafted to help you realize the full potential of your Logitech G mouse sensor, no matter which mouse in the lineup you use. The Logitech G240 Cloth Gaming Mouse Pad is expected to be available for a suggested retail price of $19.99.
