Government pressure prompts secure e-mail closures
In light of the recent NSA spying revelations, one might feel compelled to switch to an encrypted e-mail service. That might be more difficult than it sounds, though. As the New York Times' Bits blog reports, two secure e-mail providers based in the United States have shut down this week, and at least one of the closures looks like it was the result of pressure from the U.S. government.
The first service to shut down was Lavabit, which reportedly counted runaway whistleblower Edward Snowden among its users. Lavabit took ...

We're giving away a Core i7-4770K at TR BBQ X
Yep, thanks to the folks at Intel, we'll have a Core i7-4770K Haswell processor to give away to one lucky person who attends this year's TR BBQ on August 17.  I believe our biz guy, Adam, is working on lining up a motherboard to go with it.  We have a ton of other stuff to give away, too, including various bits of surplus hardware from Damage Labs and a box full of T-shirts with a brand-new, exclusive TR design.

Bottom line: if you come and join us for barbecue, yard games, swimming, fireworks, and a beachfront campfire, you're more than likely to come away with some pretty good loot, too.

Civilization Online MMO built on CryEngine 3, coming to the PC
Have you ever wanted to play a Civilization MMO? Well, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that such a game is coming. It's being developed by XL Games, and the concept looks rather interesting. Instead of commanding an entire civilization, players will control a single character within it. Their actions—and the actions of all the other individual actors—will steer the direction of the civilization as a whole. Check out the trailer:

Asus lost money on VivoTab RT, will stop making Windows RT tablets
It's official: Asus is done with Windows RT tablets. The company's VivoTab RT convertible was one of the first devices available with the ARM-based Windows OS. Despite being a nice alternative to the Surface RT, the VivoTab apparently didn't sell well. Poor sales combined with "industry sentiment" against the OS have prompted Asus to cease making Windows RT tablets completely.
Asus Chairman Jerry Shih hinted at the move last month when he said Asus was focusing on Windows 8 devices based on Intel chips. Shih called Windows RT "not very promising," and Asus CEO ...

Nvidia earnings down, but above expectations
The numbers are in for Nvidia's latest fiscal quarter. While the firm saw both revenue and earnings go down compared to the same quarter a year ago, its revenue of $977.2 million narrowly beat both Nvidia's own guidance ($975 million) and Wall Street's expectations for the quarter ($977.2 million, according to Reuters).
Here are the numbers in full. Note that the second quarter of Nvidia's 2014 fiscal year ended on July ...

A quick look at SolarFocus' Solar Mio Pro USB charger
Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? I know I am. Every year, my girl and I spend up to a full week engaged in a zombie preparedness drill. She thinks we're just camping, but I'm quietly honing our escape and survival plans. Densely populated areas can too easily become overrun with walkers, so we pile into a kayak and set out for a remote coastal island. The currents along the west coast of British Columbia are strong enough to keep undead swimmers at bay—I hope.
We only bring the essentials on these trips: food, shelter, clothing, and lots of wine. A Lobo would be too ...

Report: Nvidia to release a premium tablet next year
Up until now, Nvidia has entrusted partners like Asus and Microsoft with building tablets around its Tegra processors. Could that be about to change?
Quoting "Europe-based sources," Fudzilla reports that Nvidia will offer a "high-end" tablet of its own next year. Not much is known about the device, but Fudzilla says it will feature Nvidia's next-gen system-on-a-chip, ...
