Rovio Releases Angry Birds: Star Wars II Trailer
Ian McDiarmid, Emperor Palpatine in the upcoming Angry Birds: Star Wars 2, has joined the Pork Side. The new Angry Birds franchise game App is due to be released on September 19th on iOS and Android platforms. Pretty campy, no?

Windows 8.1 is Ready for Its October 17th Release
Keeping to its update schedule of late August, Microsoft has just completed the development of Windows 8.1 and will be making the public announcement as well as shipping to manufacturers early next week.

Providing there are no final bugs that require the 9600 build to be recompiled, the final copy will be shipped to PC makers.

Dead Island: Epidemic Closed Beta Starts Soon
Deep Silver is looking for beta testers on the recently announced Dead Island: Epidemic. Application to the beta testing is ongoing, so click the link and signup if you want to give the beta a run.

The sign up form includes questions about computer specifications, demographics and experience with other MOBAs and it's available on the game's website. If you're selected to be part of the beta, you'll be granted early access to the community forums as well.

NASA Reactivating Spacecraft to Hunt for Asteroids
I suppose this could be classified as recycling at its finest. NASA is recalling the retired Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer back into service for a three year near-Earth asteroid search mission. Why is it that when NASA gets a sense of urgency I get a bad feeling about this?

"The search took on a note of urgency after a small asteroid blasted through the skies above Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February 2013 and exploded with 20- to 30 times the force of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. More than 1,500 people were injured by flying glass and debris.

Elon Musk Will Unveil Another New Technology Next Week
Looks like Elon Musk is off his meds again. The entrepreneur/car manufacturer/inventor/mad scientist is promising yet another video of a new technology that will look like it's straight from a sci-fi movie. This should be good.

And, uhh no (zillionth person who asked), I am not going to make an IM suit, however design by hand-manipulated hologram is actually useful.

Reports of Nook's Death Greatly Exaggerated
Barnes & Noble has issued a press release pledging continued support and development of Nook products and touting the release of a new Nook product (or more) for the holiday season.

It's a bold move for Barnes & Noble and I'm not sure it'll pay off. I think too many consumers have already written off the Nook brand, and this seeming reversal of policy introduces confusion into the market

Nokia Threatens to Abandon Business in India
Nokia's manufacturing operations in India may be coming to an abrupt end. Nokia could be moving its entire India based manufacturing system to China, Nokia informed the Indian government. Nokia and the government are in dispute over a massive back tax bill.

"The political risk of operating in India [is] suddenly substantially higher and may inevitably influence future decisions to develop one's operations in India.

AT&T Playing Politics with Al Jazeera America?
Al Jazeera, the Middle Eastern based news service, has filed a lawsuit against AT&T for wrongful termination of contract. AT&T was under contract to carry the launch of Al Jazeera America news service on U-verse pay-TV service on Tuesday.

Globally, Al Jazeera is seen in more than 260 million homes in 130 countries. But the new U.S. channel has so far had difficulty getting distributors, in part because Al Jazeera was perceived by some as being anti-American during the Iraq war.

Yahoo Acquires Startup IQ Engines
Yahoo is doing what it does best: Acquiring startups, only to shut them down. This time around it's startup IQ Engines Yahoo had in its sights. IQ Engines will be shut down and blended into another Yahoo buy, Flickr.

So what's the IQ Engines team going to do now? While IQ Engines' main bread and butter was offering image-recognition APIs, it was also working on a mobile photo album application called Glow that organizes the images on your smartphone into categories based on automatically generated tags.
