Google is said to be trying to win over regulators to launch its wireless networks on airwaves that are typically reserved for TV broadcasts.

GPS Jammer Accidentally Jams Up Newark Airport
Who needs terrorists trying to disrupt airports when a truck driver trying to hide from his boss can do the same damage accidentally. An employee driving by the Newark Airport using a $100 GPS jammer to avoid location detection by his office, inadvertently jammed the Airport's Air Traffic Control GPS systems. Authorities were not amused.
As the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported, the FCC explained: "The signals emanating from the vehicle were blocking the reception of GPS signals used by the air traffic control system."

iPhone Explodes in China, Injures User's Eye
Another week, another exploding iPhone story from China. I'm starting to wonder about the Chinese contingent of iPhone users since they appear to be the main target for malfunctioning Apple products. Drop your phone, talk on it for 40 minutes and it blows up in your face; it would have been poetic justice if she had actually been a Foxconn employee who made the iPhone in the first place.
A staff member from Apple's after-sales service department told Da Lian Evening News such incidents required further investigation and typically would not be covered under product warranty.

More Than 100K Want to Go to Mars and Not Return
We ran an earlier story on the Mars One Project a while back just for the fun of it, but it seems that a whole bunch of adventuresome Earthlings are taking it seriously. To date, 100K applications have been received for this one-of-a-kind adventure and it is one-of-a-kind since none of them will ever return to Earth. Blasting off to a new planet, no chance of any outside assistance, and sure death from radiation, would you go?
"What we want to do is tell the story to the world," Lansdorp said, "when humans go to Mars, when they settle on Mars and build a new Earth, a new planet. This is one of the most exciting things that ever happened, and we want to share the story with the entire world."

CBS/Time Warner Blackout Continues into Second Week
It's looking like neither side is about to back down in the retransmission fees dispute between CBS and Time Warner Cable anytime soon. Time Warner customers are complaining, CBS ratings are down and the only clear winners here are the torrent sites.
One of the main motivations for people to download and stream TV-shows from unauthorized sources is availability. If fans can't get a show through legal channels they often turn to pirated alternatives.

Microsoft's Office 365 Uptime Exceeds 99.9%
For the first time, Microsoft has made the figures for Office 365 uptime available to the public and the numbers are impressive. The average uptime for the past four quarters hovers around 99.9%, a pretty respectable showing and little wonder why Microsoft made the findings public.
Gartner analyst Matt Cain said this move is "long overdue" because until now prospective Office 365 customers had a tough time getting this data, which is critical for making an informed decision on whether to sign up for the suite or not.

Amazon Will Begin Collecting Sales Tax in Georgia
It's all fun and games until someone loses their tax exempt status. For Georgia, the fun is over with Amazon charging online sales tax for all Georgians beginning September 1st. The State of Georgia looks to make about $18 Million per year in new tax revenues from the Amazon sales tax.
The ability of e-commerce companies to skip out on sales tax has rankled bricks-and-mortar retailers, who have argued it gives retailers like Amazon unfair advantage. That soon may come to a complete end, if a bill wending its way through the U.S. House is passed.

NSA to Cut System Administrators by 90 Percent
The Edward Snowden disclosure ripple effect has come back home to the NSA. Citing the need to limit data access, the NSA will begin to eliminate 90% of its system administrators to be replaced by automation. The NSA says it had planned all along to automate the system, but recent events have accelerated the process.
Using technology to automate much of the work now done by employees and contractors would make the NSA's networks "more defensible and more secure," as well as faster, he said at the conference, in which he did not mention Snowden by name.
