ASUS' PQ321Q 31.5-inch 4K monitor goes up for pre-order
Something I loved at Computex this year was ASUS' 31.5-inch 4K monitor, the PQ321Q. We even thought it was so good that we gave it our 'Best of Computex 2013' award for best gadget. It is priced at $3,499 but features the pixel-crushing 3840x2160 resolution, blowing most displays out of the water for screen real estate.
asus_pq321q_31_5_inch_4k_monitor_goes_up_for_pre_order
ASUS' PQ321Q features a 140PPI pixel density, and uses Sharp's IGZO technology, or Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide. IGZO have some great benefits, such as higher image quality compared to normal LCD's, all while using less power. IGZO also has each transistor in the display be made smaller, which allows for higher pixel density, and thinner screens.
The ASUS PQ321Q is 35mm thick at its deepest point, not counting the stand, which ASUS say is the thinnest wallmountable 4K display on the market. We have a 176-degree viewing angle, 10-bit color depth, 350 cd/m2 brightness rating, 8ms GTG response time and built-in speakers. DisplayPort and HDMI are on the PQ321Q for connectivity.
The PQ321Q should ship on July 16, and is available for pre-order through Amazon, Newegg and Tiger Direct.

Android leads the European market with 70%, leaves Apple with just 17.8%
Google have a huge lead over Apple in the European market, where Android takes a huge 70.4% of the mobile OS market. This leaves Apple with just 17.8% and Windows with 6.8%, these numbers are thanks to the latest OS barometer figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
android_leads_the_european_market_with_70_leaves_apple_with_just_17_8
The big reason behind Android's dominance is thanks to Samsung's Galaxy range of smartphones, which makes up over half of all smartphones sold across Europe. Android should continue to keep this dominance going into the future, as I don't think Apple can do anything in the short term to swing things around. This is something that Google have on their side for once.

Facebook brings stickers to the web
Facebook first brought its stickers to its mobile applications back in April. Those same stickers will soon be available to web users. Stickers are larger pre-made images that are similar to the simple smiley but can be animated and are quite a bit larger. Stickers are just another way for Facebook to ensure that users don't head to alternative messaging platforms.
facebook_brings_stickers_to_the_web_version
To use stickers on the web platform, simply click the usual smiley button to open the smiley menu. Click the basket icon to open up the Sticker Store where you can select from up to 16 different sticker packs. Contrary to what the name might suggest, all of these sticker packs are free. Facebook could possibly charge brands to put sticker packs into the Sticker Store, bringing in more revenue for the company.
In related news, TechCrunch is reporting that the person behind the whole sticker idea has left Facebook. Sophie Xie has only been with Facebook from 2012, but it appears that she will be moving on to bigger and better things. She originally conceived the idea during one of Facebook's famous hackathons. Her team will have to carry on without her.

Ubisoft hacked, recommends you change your password
Ubisoft has announced that one of their sites was hacked and allowed unauthorized access to user account data. Ubisoft has not revealed the number of affected users, though it potentially could be the entire Ubisoft customer base as most of Ubisoft's games require a user account to play. The company has recommended that users change their passwords and passwords on any site that makes use of the same password.
ubisoft_hacked_recommends_you_change_your_password
During this process, we learned that data were illegally accessed from our account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords. No personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your debit/credit card information was safe from this intrusion.
As a result, we are recommending you to change your password by clicking this link.
Out of an abundance of caution, we also recommend that you change your password on any other Web site or service where you use the same or a similar password.
The hackers will have to decrypt the passwords before they are useful, though this shouldn't take too long. Ubisoft stresses that the hackers did not obtain any payment data as it is not stored by the gaming studio. We're hoping to find out just how many of Ubisoft's customers were affected by the hacking, but we're not sure Ubisoft will be forthcoming with that data.

Yahoo acquires Qwiki for a rumored $50 million
Yahoo has been on an acquisition binge as of late. The latest company that Yahoo has acquired is the start-up Qwiki. Qwiki is an app that takes a user's pictures, music, and videos and turns them into short videos, hence the name Qwiki. The purchase price has not been disclosed, though it's rumored to have been around $50 million.

Yahoo has gained a reputation as a company that often kills a start-up after acquiring it. However, this doesn't seem to be the case for Qwiki. Yahoo has said in a blog post that the team will join Yahoo in its New York offices. "We will continue to support the Qwiki app, and the team will join Yahoo in our New York city office to reimagine Yahoo's storytelling experience."

ReportTT: Motorola to run Moto X ad tomorrow, says its the 'first smartphone you can design yourself'
Things have just gotten interesting on the smartphone front. In a leaked ad due to run tomorrow in several major newspapers, Motorola claims that the new Moto X is the "first smartphone you can design yourself." This clearly doesn't detail just what they mean, but the ad also plays up the smartphone's "Made in America" tag.
reporttt_motorola_to_run_moto_x_ad_tomorrow_says_its_the_first_smartphone_you_can_design_yourself
It's possible that customers will have the ability to customize the outside of the system, but it's also possible that Motorola may be taking a customized laptop approach to smartphones. If this is the case, you should be able to choose specific specifications aside from just the internal storage. You could theoretically pick different processors, screens, and RAM to suit your needs.
With Motorola starting to run ads, it's pretty likely we'll start to see and hear more about the Moto X. I would expect the device to possibly launch around the same time as the next iPhone, making it available for the holiday shopping season.
I know I'm extremely excited. Just how excited are you?

SanDisk acquires SMART Storage Systems
SanDisk continues their string of SSD-related acquisitions today with the purchase of SMART Storage Systems for $307 Million. This purchase comes after there was tremendous speculation that SanDisk was looking to acquire OCZ over the last several months. SMART Storage Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMART Worldwide Holdings, is a leading provider of current and next-generation enterprise solid state drive (SSD) products and technology.
sandisk_acquires_smart_storage_systems
SMART Storage Systems makes more sense as an acquisition for SanDisk due to their patent portfolio that includes such revolutionary technologies as the Guardian Technology Suite. SMART also has much deeper penetration into the enterprise market than OCZ, and SanDisk has traditionally focused on enterprise-centric acquisitions in the SSD market. Recent acquisitions of Pliant and FlashSoft have created significant value for SanDisk over the last several years as they increase their presence in the enterprise market.
"We are delighted that a global technology innovator and manufacturer of the caliber of SanDisk supports our belief in SMART Storage's team and portfolio of next-generation enterprise SSDs," said Iain MacKenzie, President and CEO of SMART Worldwide Holdings.
"SMART Storage is excited about the opportunity to achieve greater scale, leveraging combined R&D efforts across a broader product set," said John Scaramuzzo, President of SMART Storage Systems. "We believe this is a strategic combination that will provide attractive benefits for our customers and our talented employees."
"We are proud of what SMART Storage has accomplished since our investment in 2011, and it has been a privilege to partner with them," said Ken Hao, a Managing Partner of Silver Lake, and Ajay Shah, Founding Managing Partner of Silver Lake Sumeru. "We are honored to assist in accelerating the growth of SMART Storage's differentiated enterprise SSD technology and to help build the long-term, strategic value of the business. We are pleased that SanDisk shares our confidence in SMART Storage, and this transaction marks an exciting moment for both companies and a successful exit for Silver Lake."
The transaction is expected to be completed during August 2013, subject to customary regulatory and other approvals. Prior to the closing, SanDisk and SMART Storage will operate as separate businesses and will continue to work with their existing partners.
After closing this transaction, the remaining businesses of SMART Worldwide Holdings, including SMART Modular Technologies, will continue to operate as today. No changes are expected to impact any customers, suppliers or employees of the remaining businesses.

Snowden accuses Obama of deceit over extradition
Edward Snowden has accused Barack Obama of deception for promising in public to avoid diplomatic "wheeling and dealing" over his extradition, while privately pressuring countries to refuse his requests for asylum. Snowden, the surveillance whistleblower who is thought to be trapped in the legal limbo of a transit zone at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, used his first public comments since fleeing Hong Kong to attack the US for revoking his passport. He also accused his country of bullying nations that might grant him asylum.
snowden_accuses_obama_of_deceit_over_extradition
"On Thursday, President Obama declared before the world that he would not permit any diplomatic 'wheeling and dealing' over my case," Snowden said in a statement released by WikiLeaks. "Yet now it is being reported that after promising not to do so, the president ordered his vice-president to pressure the leaders of nations from which I have requested protection to deny my asylum petitions. This kind of deception from a world leader is not justice, and neither is the extralegal penalty of exile. These are the old, bad tools of political aggression."
Snowden's increasingly desperate predicament became further apparent on Monday night with the leak of a letter he had written to Ecuador praising its "bravery" and expressing "deep respect and sincere thanks" for considering his request for political asylum. But the change in mood in Quito, already apparent at the end of last week, was underlined by an interview Rafael Correa, the president, gave to the Guardian on Monday in which he insisted Ecuador will now not help Snowden leave Moscow and never intended to facilitate his attempted flight to South America. Correa blamed earlier signs of encouragement on a misunderstanding by its London embassy. "That we are responsible for getting him to Ecuador? It's not logical. The country that has to give him a safe conduct document is Russia," Correa said at the presidential palace in Quito. Correa said his government did not intentionally help Snowden travel from Hong Kong to Moscow with a temporary travel pass. "It was a mistake on our part."
snowden_accuses_obama_of_deceit_over_extradition
In his statement through WikiLeaks, which has been assisting him since he left Hong Kong on June 10, Snowden contrasted the current US approach to his extradition with its previous support of political dissidents in other countries. "For decades the United States of America has been one of the strongest defenders of the human right to seek asylum," he said. "Sadly, this right, laid out and voted for by the US in article 14 of the universal declaration of human rights, is now being rejected by the current government of my country." Snowden also accused the Obama administration of "using citizenship as a weapon", which has apparently left him unable to leave the airport in Moscow. "Although I am convicted of nothing, [the US] has unilaterally revoked my passport, leaving me a stateless person," he said. "Without any judicial order, the administration now seeks to stop me exercising a basic right. A right that belongs to everybody. The right to seek asylum."
Moscow confirmed earlier on Monday that Snowden had applied for political asylum in Russia. The LA Times said Snowden had made similar applications to a total of 15 countries. The former NSA contractor struck a defiant tone on Monday night. "In the end, the Obama administration is not afraid of whistleblowers like me, Bradley Manning or Thomas Drake," he said. "We are stateless, imprisoned or powerless. No, the Obama administration is afraid of you. It is afraid of an informed, angry public demanding the constitutional government it was promised - and it should be. I am unbowed in my convictions and impressed at the efforts taken by so many."
snowden_accuses_obama_of_deceit_over_extradition
His statement also came shortly after one of Obama's top intelligence officials, US director of national intelligence, James Clapper, was forced to apologise to Congress for "erroneous" claims that the US did not collect data on its own citizens. Snowden paid tribute to those who had helped him force such disclosures. "One week ago I left Hong Kong after it became clear that my freedom and safety were under threat for revealing the truth," he said. "My continued liberty has been owed to the efforts of friends new and old, family, and others who I have never met and probably never will. I trusted them with my life and they returned that trust with a faith in me for which I will always be thankful."

Edward Snowden withdraws Russian asylum request
Edward Snowden has withdrawn his request for political asylum from Russia, the Kremlin said on Tuesday, further adding to the uncertainty over the US whistleblower's future. A spokesman for Russian president Vladimir Putin said Snowden withdrew the request after Putin's statement making clear that he would be welcome only if he stopped "his work aimed at bringing harm" to the United States. "Snowden really asked to remain in Russia," Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman, said. "Learning yesterday of Russia's position...he abandoned his intentions and his request to get the possibility to stay in Russia."
edward_snowden_withdraws_russian_asylum_request
Russia has refused to hand over Snowden, charged under espionage laws in the US after leaking top-secret documents on US surveillance programs. He has been kept hidden away since June 23, when he landed in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong. His attempts to win asylum have been fraught with difficulty. Rafael Correa, president of Ecuador, told the Guardian that his country, whose London embassy is sheltering WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, was not considering Snowden's asylum request. He also said Ecuador never intended to facilitate Snowden's flight from Hong Kong, calling his London consul's decision to issue temporary travel documents to Snowden "a mistake".
Speaking to Reuters in Moscow on Tuesday on the second day of a two-day visit, Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuelan president, said Snowden "deserves the world's protection". He said Venezuela had not yet received an asylum request from Snowden. Asked whether he would take Snowden back to Venezuela with him, Maduro answered wryly: "What we're taking with us are multiple agreements that we're signing with Russia, including oil and gas." But he added his support for the US whistleblower: "Edward Snowden is a 29-year-old young, brave man who didn't kill anyone, didn't give any reason for the start of war," Russian news agencies cited Maduro as saying.
edward_snowden_withdraws_russian_asylum_request
A WikiLeaks statement released early on Tuesday said that in addition to Ecuador and Iceland, Snowden had made asylum requests to 19 countries, including Venezuela, China, Bolivia, France and Germany. Maduro said Venezuela would examine the asylum request once it was received. "We think this young person has done something very important for humanity, has done a favor to humanity, has spoken great truths to deconstruct a world...that is controlled by an imperialist American elite," he said.
At least two countries where Snowden requested asylum have said they will not cooperate. Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, said that Snowden's request did "not meet the requirements for a formal application for asylum. Even if it did, I will not give a positive recommendation." Finland said on Tuesday that it could not accept his application as Finnish law required him to be in the country. Finnish foreign ministry spokeswoman Tytti Pylkko said that Snowden had sent his request by fax to Finland's embassy in Moscow.
edward_snowden_withdraws_russian_asylum_request
Peskov did not detail how Snowden withdrew his asylum request from Russia. The request was handed to a Russian consular official at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport late on Sunday via Snowden's WikiLeaks handler, Sarah Harrison. In an awkwardly phrased statement released via WikiLeaks late on Monday, Snowden accused the Obama administration of "using citizenship as a weapon" and placing undue pressure on countries where he had applied for asylum. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, spoke with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday on the sidelines of a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on Tuesday. Lavrov told reporters that the two did not discuss Snowden.
According to WikiLeaks, Snowden has requested asylum from Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Venezuela.

Rafael Correa not considering Snowden asylum, now says that helping him was a 'mistake'
Ecuador's president Rafael Correa said Snowden 'must be on Ecuadorean territory' to make an asylum request. Ecuador is not considering Edward Snowden's asylum request and never intended to facilitate his flight from Hong Kong, president Rafael Correa said as the whistleblower made a personal plea to Quito for his case to be heard.
Snowden was Russia's responsibility and would have to reach Ecuadorean territory before the country would consider any asylum request, the president said in an interview with the Guardian on Monday. "Are we responsible for getting him to Ecuador? It's not logical. The country that has to give him a safe conduct document is Russia." The president, speaking at the presidential palace in Quito, said his government did not intentionally help Snowden travel from Hong Kong to Moscow with a temporary travel pass. "It was a mistake on our part," he added. Asked if he thought the former NSA contractor would ever make it to Quito, he replied: "Mr Snowden's situation is very complicated, but in this moment he is in Russian territory and these are decisions for the Russian authorities."
On whether Correa would like to meet him, the president said: "Not particularly. He's a very complicated person. Strictly speaking, Mr Snowden spied for some time." The comments contrasted with expressions of gratitude the 30-year-old fugitive issued hours later, before Correa's views had been published. "I must express my deep respect for your principles and sincere thanks for your government's action in considering my request for political asylum," Snowden said, according to a letter written in Spanish and obtained by the Press Association news agency, based in London. "There are few world leaders who would risk standing for the human rights of an individual against the most powerful government on earth, and the bravery of Ecuador and its people is an example to the world." Snowden compared the silence of governments afraid of US retaliation with Ecuador's help in his flight to Moscow on 22 June. A temporary Ecuadorean travel document substituted for his cancelled US passport. "The decisive action of your consul in London, Fidel Narvaez, guaranteed my rights would be protected upon departing Hong Kong - I could never have risked travel without that. Now, as a result, and through the continued support of your government, I remain free and able to publish information that serves the public interest."
rafael_correa_not_considering_snowden_asylum_now_says_that_helping_him_was_a_mistake
The letter will boost Ecuador's reputation with Snowden's supporters but sat awkwardly with the president's attempt to distance Quito from the saga. Correa said Quito respected the right of asylum and appreciated Snowden exposing the extent of US spying, but would not consider an asylum request unless he made it to an Ecuadorean embassy or the country itself - a remote possibility while he remains reportedly marooned in Sheremetyevo airport's transit lounge. "He must be on Ecuadorean territory," the president said. Earlier on Monday, Moscow confirmed that Snowden had applied for asylum in Russia. The Los Angeles Times said he had made similar applications to a total of 15 countries. In another statement, issued through by the campaigning website Wikileaks, Snowden attacked President Obama for putting pressure behind on the scenes on countries to which he had petitioned for asylum.
In his Guardian interview, Correa said his government had not, and would not, give Snowden an authorized travel document to extract himself from Moscow airport. "The right of asylum request is one thing but helping someone travel from one country to another - Ecuador has never done this." He said that the temporary travel document issued by his London consul on 22 June--and publicly disowned five days later--was a blunder. "It was a mistake on our part. Look, this crisis hit us in a very vulnerable moment. Our foreign minister was touring Asia. Our deputy foreign minister was in the Czech Republic. Our US ambassador was in Italy."
rafael_correa_not_considering_snowden_asylum_now_says_that_helping_him_was_a_mistake
Narvaez and the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has sheltered at Ecuador's London embassy for the past year to escape extradition, took matters into their own hands because they feared Snowden risked capture, Correa said. "The consul, in his desperation, probably he couldn't reach the foreign minister...and he issued a safe conduct document without validity, without authorisation, without us even knowing." Correa added that the consul was a "cultured" man who cited the example of Ecuadorean diplomats in Czechoslovakia giving Jews visas in defiance of their foreign ministry during the second world war. "Look, he [Assange] is in the embassy, he's a friend of the consul, and he calls him at four in the morning to say they are going to capture Snowden. The [consul] is desperate - 'how are we going to save the life of this man?' - and does it. So I told him: OK, if you think you did the right thing, I respect your decision, but you could not give, without authorisation, that safe conduct pass. It was completely invalid, and he will have to accept the consequences." Narvaez would be "sanctioned", the president said, without elaborating.
rafael_correa_not_considering_snowden_asylum_now_says_that_helping_him_was_a_mistake
Some Ecuadorean diplomats have complained that Assange appeared to usurp Quito but the president said there was no rupture. "Mr Assange continues to enjoy our total respect and is under the protection of the Ecuadorean state." Correa, a standard bearer for the left in Latin America, has joined European and other Latin Americans leaders in denouncing US espionage. However, he softened his tone over the weekend and praised vice-president Joe Biden for a gracious phone call, saying he would consider Washington's request to refuse any asylum claim from Snowden while retaining Ecuador's sovereignty.
Correa's comments provide further confirmation Ecuador is unlikely to help Snowden escape his current limbo. His passport has been revoked and countries around the world are under pressure not to let him continue his journey. Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected U.S. calls to expel Snowden to the United States and says Snowden should choose a destination and leave the Moscow airport as soon as possible. A presidential spokesman said the issue was not on Putin's agenda and suggested it was being handled by Russia's domestic intelligence agency. The asylum request has helped Correa boost his profile within the region and could help him take on the mantle of late Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who for more than a decade was Latin America's loudest critic of Washington. "This may be the largest espionage case in this history of humanity," Correa said.
rafael_correa_not_considering_snowden_asylum_now_says_that_helping_him_was_a_mistake
Correa, who has repeatedly confronted the United States since first being elected in 2006, said on Saturday he had a "cordial" phone conversation with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who asked that Ecuador not grant Snowden asylum. Correa added that he would take into account the opinion of the U.S. government when making the decision. On Sunday he sent his regards to Snowden, whom he has thanked for revealing information about espionage efforts by the United States that go beyond its own borders. "Keep your spirits up and be brave," Correa said. "You have to know how to assume your responsibilities, but if you acted in good conscience then you can be at peace with yourself."
rafael_correa_not_considering_snowden_asylum_now_says_that_helping_him_was_a_mistake
The fallout over U.S. spying operations, the revelation of which has been a major embarrassment for U.S. President Barack Obama, appeared to expand on Sunday as the European Union confronted Washington on reports of spying by the National Security Agency. Ecuador said on Thursday it was pulling out of a U.S. trade benefits program in protest of pressure from the United States for having considered Snowden's asylum request. "Ecuador will not be pressured or blackmailed by anyone," Correa said.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange--granted asylum last year in Ecuador's London embassy--has not lost the country's support despite apparently contributing to confusion over a travel document Ecuador's government issued to Snowden, Correa said. "In these crises when there is need to respond with urgency, it's also possible to make mistakes. But Mr. Assange continues to enjoy our support, respect and appreciation," he said. Ecuador's London consulate issued Snowden an unauthorized safe-passage document, potentially as a result of communication with Assange, Correa said on Saturday. Assange had said that Snowden received refugee papers from the Ecuadorean government to secure safe passage as he fled Hong Kong for Russia, which Correa's government had originally denied. Correa's critics have in recent days accused him of letting Assange take charge of crucial foreign policy matters.

Firefox OS-powered smartphone debuts in Spain for $90
Say hello to the first Firefox OS-powered smartphone, the ZTE Open. ZTE's Open goes on sale in Spain today on the Telefonica Movistar network and will cost 69 euros ($90 or so).
firefox_os_powered_smartphone_debuts_in_spain_for_90
But, it gets better - for $90, you get the ZTE Open and a 30 euro pre-paid balance for calls, as well as a 4GB microSD card. Quite the bargain if you ask me. Inside the ZTE Open, we have 256MB of RAM, a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera and 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen. The OS is built entirely on HTML5, which means it has the ability to run a variety of apps.
We should expect more Firefox OS-based smartphones in the near future, but it'll be a while before they start throwing punches with the big boys over at Apple, Samsung and Google.

Apple to build a solar farm to power their Nevada-based data center as well as the surrounding community
Apple will be working with NV Energy, a Nevada-based utility company, where they'll build a solar array together. The new solar array will be built next to Apple's Reno, Nevada-based data center, and will power the data center once it's complete, as well as the surrounding community. Apple said in a statement:
apple_to_build_a_solar_farm_to_power_their_nevada_based_data_center_as_well_as_the_surrounding_community
All of Apple's data centers use 100 percent renewable energy, and we are on track to meet that goal in our new Reno data center using the latest in high-efficiency concentrating solar panels. This project will not only supply renewable energy for our data center but also provide clean energy to the local power grid, through a first-of-its-kind partnership with NV Energy. When completed, the 137 acre solar array will generate approximately 43.5 million kilowatt hours of clean energy, equivalent to taking 6,400 passenger vehicles off the road per year.
The new facility will create around 1,000 jobs in and around Washoe Country, as well as "result in, over a 10-year period, a total of $24.1 million in direct and indirect revenues in Nevada" according to a survey by Applied Economics for the State of Nevada. Apple's goal is to eventually have all of their facilities powered by 100% renewable energy, and at this rate, they'll get there in no time.

Windows 8 has actually passed Windows Vista as the third-most used OS on the market
Net Applications' latest data has some good news for Microsoft, as Windows 8 is finally getting into its stride. It has passed Windows Vista to become the third-most used OS in the world.
windows_8_has_actually_passed_windows_vista_as_the_third_most_used_os_on_the_market
Windows 8 enjoys 5.1% of the OS market share, with first place going to Windows 7 with 44.37% and second place we have Windows XP with 37.17%. Windows Vista gets pushed into fourth position with 4.62% of the worldwide OS market share, and Apple enjoys the next three positions with OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.
Net Applications' data shows that Microsoft have enjoyed a nice uptick in selling Windows 8-based systems since May, increasing from their 4.27% figure to the current 5.1% figure. It'll be a very long time in third position, unless consumers start buying Windows 8 devices in serious numbers, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I would be surprised to see them break 8% by the end of the year.

Minecraft 1.6.1 'The Horse Update' has gone live
The unstoppable Minecraft has a new update available, which is known as "The Horse Update". The Horse Update pushes Minecraft up to version 1.6.1, which - you guessed it - includes horses in the game now.
minecraft_1_6_1_the_horse_update_has_gone_live
Mojang have also provided donkeys and mules, which can be bred and spawned naturally. These animals do require taming before you can ride them, but once you do you can ride them around in the game world, adding chests to their saddles. You can also name your horses like other 'pets' and add all sorts of armor like iron and diamond.
The Horse Update also includes improvements, such as a conversion tool that lets you convert texture packs to resource packs, which will allow you to add sounds to different items. This update includes the usual performance and stability fixes, as well as improvements in riding mounts, respiration enhancements, extra tooltips, carpets in different colors which can be added on blocks, and like you can do stain wool you can now do stained clay.
For the builder in you, there's also hardened clay which is just as hard as stone.

Xbox One will be capable of scanning QR codes with its Kinect sensor
The Xbox One is getting closer with every breath we take, and with each day that passes it feels like we're hearing more about the console. Today, the news has broken that the Kinect sensor has a cool ability.
xbox_one_will_be_capable_of_scanning_qr_codes_with_its_kinect_sensor
This ability is that the sensor will let gamers scan download codes with the Kinect camera, versus the current way of entering them in manually - which is such a chore. Kinectimals is used as an example, which takes advantage of QR codes. It makes getting into the game not only easier, but faster.

Western Digital My Passport Ultra 500GB Portable HDD Review
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
The WD My Passport Ultra was announced just a few short months ago, with capacities ranging from 500GB to 1TB all of which are USB 3.0 capable. To enhance the Ultra's capabilities over competing products, WD has added a few software features to the portable solution.
Included with the My Passport Ultra you will find WD SmartWare, which we first had the chance to play with when we reviewed the EDGE for Mac just last month. WD has taken it a step further with the Ultra, offering WD Security software that encrypts the drive and WD Drive Utilities that's allows you to set a sleep timer, perform diagnostic and even erase the drive. The My Passport Ultra is offered in four colors (Titanium, Red, Blue and Black) and comes with a three year warranty.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
The Ultra was delivered to us in it retail packaging. The storage capacity is listed in the bottom right corner, and to the left the window allows a peak of the drive.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
The scope of delivery has the Ultra packaged with the USB 3.0 cable and a very nice carrying bag.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
The receptacle used on the Ultra is the USB 3.0 micro-B type.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
As this is a portable drive, we placed the Ultra on our digital scale. Here we have the My Passport weighing in at 135.5 grams or 4.7 ounces.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Pulling apart the Ultra, we found it to use the same drive as the Passport EDGE for Mac.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
The back of the drive houses the custom PCB that includes the USB 3.0 controller and connector on-board.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Above we have loaded WD SmartWare on our PC, and have begun the process of backing up to the Ultra. There is also the option of backing up to Dropbox.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
When setting up your backup, WD allows you to configure the files and folders manually or to have them bunched into categories. Here we have chosen category backup, and SmartWare has broken down the amount of data to be backed up.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Here we have opened up WD Drive Utilities, and as you can see we have the option of performing several drive tests along with setting the sleep timer and erasing the drive.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Above is the setup for WD Security, the encryption software for all new My Passport solutions.
To test external storage platforms I utilize three of the most well-known and respected benchmark applications. ATTO Disk Benchmark is the first and is recognized as the industry standard for marketing specifications. The second, CDM or Crystal Disk Mark offers sequential read and write metrics, 512K random read and writes and 4K data with Queue Depths up to 32. Through DiskBench we offer real-world testing as it offers a custom data set that can be controlled by the user. For our testing I use a 10GB directory of mixed data that includes, pictures in both the RAW and JPEG file formats, AVCHD video and documents in both the XLS and DOC formats.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Gathering marketing numbers through ATTO, we ended up topping out the Ultra at 120MB/s read and 120MB/s write.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
Looking over our numbers achieved within CDM, I found the My Passport matching sequential numbers with ATTO. More impressive, the 512K random writes were touching 65MB/s.
western_digital_my_passport_ultra_500gb_portable_hdd_review
In our real-world testing with DiskBench, we found the WD My Passport Ultra to be most impressive at 115MB/s, becoming the fastest drive in our charts, despite plenty of competition from our set of ADATA drives.
The My Passport Ultra is a unique drive, which sets itself apart in the saturated market of portable storage solutions by offering one of the most comprehensive sets of software I have seen.
The included WD SmartWare software offers one of the easiest solutions when it comes to data backup and restoration, which I find to be something that really enriches the environment that the end-user experiences. New additions of Drive Utilities make managing your drive even easier and WD Security allows for a simple solution to keeping your data secure and private.
Performance of the Ultra was rather impressive, enough so to top our DiskBench chart at 115MB/s. ATTO showed the drive reaching a peak of 120MB/s in both read and write, while CDM presented us with random read of 45MB/s and writes at 65MB/s.
Pricing of the Western Digital My Passport Ultra in its 500GB capacity is set at a very comforting $99.99 with availability extremely high.

RunCore Pro IV 256GB PATA ZIF SSD Review
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
RunCore has been around for a number of years building unique solutions that cater to end-user's needs. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that today we have one of these solutions in house, namely the RunCore Pro IV ZIF SSD in the 256GB capacity. RunCore has also sent for this review, their external USB 2.0 HDD/SSD casing that utilizes the ZIF form factor, so we could take this drive for a spin.
Now you may be wondering, as I did when I first saw this drive, what uses the ZIF form factor these days? For starters, when Apple released the first MacBook Air in 2008, the super compact design of the chassis called for storage to suit, and since then we have seen other OEMs such as HP and Dell roll netbooks out using this form factor as well. Therefore, if you own a unit such as a MacBook Air Rev A, Dell Inspiron Mini12 or even an HP Mini 1000, then this drive is for you.
RunCore has spec'd this drive at 135MB/s read and 130MB/s write. This drive also carries bad block management and static wear levelling technologies.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
Our RunCore Pro IV SSD was delivered to us in its retail form. The front of the box carries the RunCore logo; at the bottom, you find a list of the included items.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
Upon opening the packaging we found everything tucked away securely in dense foam.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
After laying everything out on our table, the scope of delivery included the ZIF SSD, HDD/SSD case, USB 2.0 cable and warranty papers.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
After opening up our SSD, we found the Silicon Motion SM2244 being utilized as the FSP. To the left we find the Marvel PATA to SATA bridge chip and above 256GB of Micron MLC NAND.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
After positioning the ZIF cable properly, we were ready to install the cover and get to testing.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
The casing for the RunCore ZIF SSD uses a 1.8" form factor, and is manufactured out of an aluminium shell with a plastic frame.
To test external storage platforms we utilize three of the most well-known and respected benchmark applications. ATTO Disk Benchmark is the first and is recognized as the industry standard for marketing specifications.
The second, CDM or Crystal Disk Mark offers sequential read and write metrics, 512K random read and writes and 4K data with Queue Depths up to 32.
Through Disk Bench, we offer real-world testing as it offers a custom data set that can be controlled by the user. For our testing I use a 10GB directory of mixed data that includes, pictures in both the RAW and JPEG file formats, AVCHD video and documents in both the XLS and DOC formats.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
Since we are testing the RunCore ZIF SSD inside its USB 2.0 casing, we simply cannot expect that this drive is going hit its marketing targets. In ATTO the drive did pretty well topping out USB 2.0 speeds at 43MB/s read and 43MB/s write.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
CrystalDiskMark we hit the same numbers in sequential testing. However, random reads were impressive at 42MB/s read and 37MB/s write. 4K did quite well pushing close to 11MB/s.
runcore_pro_iv_256gb_pata_zif_ssd_review
Looking over the DiskBench chart, we did not expect to see the RunCore top the charts with its USB 2.0 casing holding it back. However, it was only 30MB/s off the ADATA Dashdrive that came in at 69MB/s.
There's no doubt that the RunCore Pro IV PATA ZIF SSD caters to those of you that have and enjoy your first gen MacBook Air or any of the netbook PCs I mentioned earlier, and of course testing this drive through its USB 2.0 enclosure isn't really practical. There is a sunnier side to this though and that is, the speeds seen here are worst-case scenario, with the drive bottlenecked by USB 2.0.
Performance of the RunCore Pro IV in the configuration we have here and of course considering USB 2.0 was exceptional, and I say this because the drive maxed out USB 2.0 and of course, I have no doubts this drive will meet or even exceed marketing specifications.
Pricing of this drive at the time of writing is a bit of a wash. While I was able to find it at several online shops, none of them are what I call reputable. I was able to find the smaller 128GB capacity at MyDigitalDiscount for $189.99, so I would say you are looking at $289.99 for this drive in the 256GB configuration.

ASUS Announces PQ321Q Pre-Order: The World's First Consumer 4K Monitor
ASUS, a worldwide leader in high performance large screen displays, today announced the exclusive pre-order for the highly-anticipated PQ321Q True 4K UHD monitor. Starting July 1st, US consumers will be able to pre-order the world's first consumer 4K monitor through Newegg, Amazon, or TigerDirect at an introductory MSRP of $3,499 USD. The PQ321Q True 4K UHD Monitor, a desktop display with a stunning Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 resolution, delivers a screen resolution equivalent to four Full HD displays combined. It has a 31.5-inch LED-backlit 4K Ultra HD display (140 pixels-per-inch) with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and supports 10-bit RGB 'deep color' for vibrant images with more natural transitions between hues.
asus_announces_pq321q_pre_order_the_world_s_first_consumer_4k_monitor
Introducing Cutting-edge IGZO Panel Technology
The ASUS PQ321Q True 4K UHD Monitor uses cutting-edge Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO) rather than traditional amorphous silicon for the active layer of its LCD panel. IGZO panels support much smaller transistors than amorphous silicon, enabling much smaller pixels. This allows the PQ321Q to have four times the amount of pixels compared to a 1920 x 1080 Full HD display. Despite the increase in pixels, the PQ321Q offers peace of mind by coming with a 30-day Zero Bright Dot warranty.
To ensure the ultimate visual experience, 176-degree wide viewing angles on both vertical and horizontal planes minimize onscreen color shift, while the 350cd/m² brightness rating and 8ms gray-to-gray response time ensure smooth, bright, and vibrant moving visuals. IGZO technology also gives reduced energy consumption compared to amorphous silicon and reduces bulk, maximizing your available space. At 35mm at its thickest point, the PQ321Q is not only the first True 4K UHD consumer monitor but also the thinnest available today.
Comprehensive Video Inputs for UHD Content
