SanDisk's Extreme II SSD reviewed
The democratization of SSDs has been an exciting trend to watch. Over the past few years, prices have tumbled dramatically, and performance has improved by leaps and bounds. SSDs have gone from prohibitively expensive luxuries to essential components for all but the most affordable PCs.
More recently, consumer-grade SSDs seem to have plateaued. Prices have stabilized and even crept upward slightly from where they were last year. We haven't seen much development on the controller front, though NAND makers continue to churn ...

ECS enables Haswell overclocking on H87, B85, and H81 chipsets
A couple of weeks ago, ASRock announced that it had found a way to enable CPU overclocking on Intel's H87 and B85 chipsets. Now, ECS has joined the party with a "Non-Z" overclocking feature of its own. The ECS implementation purportedly allows multiplier-based overclocking on H87, B85, and H81 motherboards. You'll still need an unlocked K-series processor to overclock, though.
ECS claims to be the first motherboard maker to enable overclocking on the H81 platform. That said, the H87 and B85 appear to offer more headroom. ECS's press release includes CPU-Z screenshots of a Core i7-4770K cranked up to 4.8GHz on H87 and B85 systems. On an H81 rig, the CPU only hit 4.5GHz. There's no indication ...

Blind test suggests gamers overwhelmingly prefer 120Hz refresh rates
Most LCD monitors update the display at 60Hz—once every 16.7 milliseconds. Faster 120Hz displays have been around for a while, though, and I've always been curious about how their higher refresh changes the user experience. None of the 120Hz displays I've used have been set up for a proper apples-to-apples comparison, so I haven't gotten a good sense of the difference.
Cue the folks at Hardware.Info, who set up a blind test to determine whether gamers prefer playing at 60 or 120Hz on otherwise identical systems. ...

Windows 8.1 public preview kills the Windows Performance Index
There's been a lot of buzz lately about Windows 8.1's new features and additions. Apparently, though, the latest Windows release also takes some things away. According to technology blog McAkins Online, the Windows 8.1 public preview removes the familiar Windows Experience Index from the System control panel.
That two-digit figure has been there since Windows Vista. It's generated by the Windows System Assessment Tool, which tests CPU, memory, graphics, gaming, and ...

Silvermont Atom beats Snapdragon 800 in benchmark
Intel's next-generation "Silvermont" Atom processors are due out later this year. Thanks in part to a revamped architecture with out-of-order execution, those processors are supposed to be much faster than the current generation. If a leaked benchmark result spotted by Hardware.info is any indication, next-gen Atoms are also be a fair bit quicker than competing, ARM-powered chips.
Hardware.info grabbed the benchmark score from AnTuTu, an Android benchmark database. It says the Bay Trail-T system-on-a-chip, which packs ...

Report: Tegra 4 shipments are unimpressive
Nvidia's
Tegra 3 was a hit. The system-on-a-chip made its way into a cornucopia
of tablets, including Google's Nexus 7 and Microsoft's Surface for
Windows RT. What of the Tegra 4? So far, it seems, the new SoC may not
be living up to its predecessor's legacy.A story by DigiTimes says that Tegra 4 shipments are "limited" despite high-profile design wins from Asus, HP, and Toshiba. The site's sources ...
