New Mac malware confuses users with right-to-left file name tricks
A new piece of digitally signed spyware for Mac OS X uses a special Unicode character in its file name to hide its real file extension from users and trick them into installing it. The malware, which has been dubbed Janicab.A, is written in Python and is packaged as a stand-alone Mac application using the py2app utility, researchers from security firm F-Secure said Monday in a blog post.

W3C rejects ad industry attempt to hijack do-not-track specs
The World Wide Web Consortium has rejected an attempt by the advertising industry to hijack a specification describing how websites should respond to "do not track" requests sent by Web browsers. Suggestions from the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) would have allowed advertisers to continue profiling users who had asked not to be tracked. It would also have allowed them to "retarget" ads to those users by showing ads relevant to one site or transaction on all subsequent sites they visited, according to the co-chairs of the W3C's Tracking Protection Working Group.

Peak PC and Microsoft's dilemma -- and opportunity
Although a historic downturn in PC shipments has made headlines since April, "peak PC" -- the moment when personal computers crested -- was two years ago, according to data from researcher IDC. In the third quarter of 2011, global PC shipments totaled 96.1 million, slightly more than the following quarter's 95.8 million, IDC said. But shipments declined 4 percent in 2012 and are headed for an even larger dip of 8 percent, perhaps more, in 2013.

Lenovo turns to software partnerships to expand server business
Lenovo is expanding software partnerships as it tries to break into a server market dominated by Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Dell. Its first such partnership expansion, announced Tuesday, is with VMware on virtualization products. Lenovo will bundle ThinkServer products with VMware's vSphere with Operations Management.

App economy expected to double by 2017 to $151 billion
The combined value of paid apps, app-enabled purchases of goods and services and in-app advertising is expected to double to $151 billion in the U.S. by 2017, AppNation said today. The research shows that the largest segment of the so-called app economy is sales of app-enabled physical goods and services, which made up about $45 billion of the nearly $60 billion total at the start of 2013. By the middle of this year, the $60 billion total reached about $72 billion, which is expected to more than double to $151 billion in 2017.
