Computer Smart As A 4 Year Old
This specially designed computer is only as smart "as a 4 year old." So much for computers taking over the world.

Artificial and natural knowledge researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have IQ-tested one of the best available artificial intelligence systems to see how intelligent it really is. Turns out–it's about as smart as the average 4-year-old, they will report July 17 at the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Conference in Bellevue, Wash.

Even though this was no fault of his own, PayPal will no doubt lock his account for 180 days while they "investigate."

Delaware County resident Chris Reynolds received just such a shocking delivery from PayPal on Friday, when he opened his monthly statement from the online money-transfer company via email and saw that his ending balance was $92,233,720,368,547,800.

Apple Just Lost 300M Customers
I guess Apple is just pissing everyone off lately.

MTS, Russia's largest mobile operator, made a splash last week by announcing it will stop offering iPhones due to the high subsidies and marketing support demanded by Apple. Now both Vimpelcom and Megafon have followed suit and dropped the iPhone after their five-year contracts recently expired.

Foursquare Showing Ads After Check-Ins
Apparently Foursquare is now showing ads after check-ins. In other news, people are still using Foursquare.

The 4-year-old location-based social network encourages people to "check in" at venues while out and about, and uses that check-in data to recommend nearby places for members to check out. Now, the company hopes to capitalize on those check-ins by showing members ads after the fact.

Sony Abandons Appeal Over PSN Security-Breach Fine
Sony has dropped its appeal of the $377,000 fine imposed by the UK Information Commissioner's Office earlier this year.

The UK Information Commissioner's Office imposed the fine in January, finding Sony negligent for failing to protect PSN users whose login and credit card details had been leaked. On Monday, Sony said it still disagreed with the verdict but continuing to fight it would risk exposing sensitive security data.

Piracy Collapses As Legal Alternatives Do Their Job
Wait, legal alternatives to piracy that are cheap and easily accessible can actually curb piracy? Whoddathunkit?!?

Entertainment industry groups in Norway have spent years lobbying for tougher anti-piracy laws, finally getting their way earlier this month. But with fines and site blocking now on the agenda, an interesting trend has been developing. Sales Taxes for Kickstarters
Just FYI, if you are planning on using Kickstarter for your next project, the IRS has a few words for you.

Kickstarter and other like funding websites

The classification of the tax will depend on the "reward" given. For example, if the reward is classified as a retail sale (tangible personal property) it will be subject to retail sales tax if delivered to a customer in Washington State. You can look up the rate using our Tax Rate Lookup Tool.

When rewards are delivered to a buyer that is located outside of Washington, the sale is considered an interstate or foreign sale and is not subject to Washington sales tax. The sale is also deductible from the retailing B&O tax. Therefore an "interstate and foreign sale deduction" can be taken on both the retail sales tax line and retailing B&O line.
