Tumblr on iOS expands search, Android version gets new animations
Tumblr's iOS and Android apps were both updated today, with the former getting a "new discovery experience" and the latter getting a variety of updates (most notably a UI redesign). The iOS app's update adds the ability to "search tags and blogs" directly through Tumblr iOS' "discovery" section (previously you could only search by tag), making it all the easier to find that entry on Public Shaming you wanted to show mom.
The Android app, meanwhile has "fancy new post animations," and apparently it makes "images pop!" There are also a couple of bug fixes and some functionality updates -- full notes for both versions are just below, and you can snag Tumblr for iOS and Android at the links in the source. Now if you'll excuse us, we've gotta get back to reading Dear Trolls.

Samsung offers $4 million bounty to populate Tizen app store
Samsung has over $4 million up for grabs to entice would-be developers toward its Tizen mobile OS. If you're feeling crafty -- and who isn't futzing in the garage these days? -- you have until November 1st to submit an app based on the South Korean giant's upstart ecosystem. Games take the lion's share of the prize, with the top title walking away with $200K out of the category's $340K. The winning non-game application (music, social networking, et cetera) takes home $120K, and the 10 best HTML 5-based apps each net $50K. While we've seen this sort of stunt before, the end results typically speak for themselves.

Revamped Google Maps for Android rolling out with new discovery, navigation tweaks
Google showed off its new maps UI for desktop and mobile back in May, and now the update is slowly rolling out for Android 4.0.3+ devices. At its event Google said this new version is bringing a more personalized experience, while the changelog reveals new navigation data with "live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting." Ratings, reviews and other info have also been pushed to the front in an effort to help users find out more about local places, and on tablets an "Experience" feature should bring enhanced indoor walkthroughs. Assuming you haven't already booked your own ticket to the desktop beta, check out Google's PC-centric video preview after the break, or our hands-on impressions here. The description is live in the Play Store, but you may need to go another route if you'd like to snag the latest APK before the download rolls out to everyone.

Sprint unveils Velocity Service Bus, puts your car's settings in the cloud
Many connected cars only take limited control through the internet -- they can receive directions and unlock doors, but rarely much more. Sprint is widening that scope by launching Velocity Service Bus, an upgrade to its Velocity infotainment platform. The IBM-powered expansion adds that map delivery feature, but it will also sync cabin settings through the cloud: preferences like radio stations, seat positions and temperatures can transfer between vehicles. Naturally, this also makes it easy to customize the car's interior through a smartphone or another remote device. While drivers will have to wait for automakers to implement Velocity Service Bus, it may cure quite a few headaches for multi-car homes once it arrives.

Researchers say new development could give artificial skin a wider range of senses
We've seen a number of efforts to build a better artificial skin, or "e-skin," over the years, and a team of researchers from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology now say they've made a breakthrough that could lead to some of the most sensitive e-skin yet. The key development is a new type of flexible sensor that would not only allow the artificial skin to detect touch, but humidity and temperature as well. Those sensors are comprised of gold-based nanoparticles that are just five to eight nanometers in diameter and laid on top of a substrate -- in their research, the scientists used PET, the type of plastic you'd normally find in soda bottles. That substrate conducts electricity differently depending on the way it is bent, which means researchers can adjust its sensitivity just by increasing its thickness. As you might expect, this is all still in the early stages, but the researchers see plenty of possibilities for the future, from bringing a sense of touch to artificial limbs to using the same technology to monitor stress on bridges.

Google+ update pulls +1'd posts into your friend's streams
Google has finally added a feature to its social network that makes its +1 feature work more like That Other Social Network's "like" button. As shown above and detailed in a post by team member Shimrit Ben-Yair, starting today it will "occasionally highlight" posts that were +1'd by people you've included in your circles, and show posts you've +1'd to people who have you in their circles. Until now, you had to go to someone's profile to see what posts they'd marked +1, but this change makes it both more familiar (alongside the existing Share button and trending topics) and potentially more annoying. The same circle-based privacy settings that already existed manage who sees your +1s, and you can turn down the volumes on anyone bringing too many items into your stream. The new feature is rolling out over the next few days, let us know if you think it's a change for the better.

BlackBerry 10.1 arrives for Z10 on AT&T
We doubt that many of AT&T's BlackBerry users want to buy a Q10 just to get BlackBerry 10.1, and today they won't have to: the upgrade is rolling out now to the network's Z10 owners. The OS update is similar to what we've seen elsewhere, adding Skype support and HDR photography as well as improvements to both the Hub and notifications. Z10 users should get BlackBerry 10.1 over the air, although those who prefer to update the wired way can visit the source link for a download.

Nissan to install EV quick charge stations at more than 100 US dealerships
Like Tesla, Nissan knows that EV drivers want a safety net of charging stations; it's no fun to hunt for a power socket many miles from home. Accordingly, the automaker will soon deploy CHAdeMO-based quick chargers at more than 100 dealerships across 21 US markets. The rollout starts this summer and finishes by April 1st of next year. Combined with stations from a 24-dealer pilot, the expansion should give many urban Leaf drivers at least one reliable charging location -- and Nissan may get a few more sales in the bargain.

Foursquare arrives for Nokia S40s, mayoral population explodes worldwide (update)
Foursquare is looking to make at least 1.5 billion new mayors. The app that gamified being out and about announced that starting today, it's available for Nokia S40 phones. While we haven't seen an Asha in North America in some time, the model line's dominance in emerging markets is nothing to sneeze at. The check-in service also announced its app will be preloaded on "a bunch of new Asha devices" when they're released "in a few months." We've contacted Nokia and Foursquare because the S40 line rolls deep, and will update this post when we find out if the app requires GPS to work -- Nokia's Nearby doesn't. To test it out for yourself, the source links are a click away.
Update: Nokia confirmed to us that Foursquare does not require GPS to work with S40. We're still waiting on a list of those new Asha devices.

HTC One for Verizon caught stopping by FCC
Sure, it might've taken a while for Verizon to admit that it would carry the HTC One, but now the phone is just about ready to light up its network. Uncle Sam's just played host to a variant of the device with model number PN07310, which lines up with its cousin on Sprint, and it packs Big Red-friendly radios for LTE (band 13), GSM (850/1900) and CDMA (850/1900). Naturally, the FCC's documents also indicate support for WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. Now that Peter Chou's wunderkind has passed the required government hurdle, it's ready to arrive "later this summer," just as Verizon promised.

Tesla to join the Nasdaq 100 as Oracle departs for the NYSE
As of Monday, July 15th, Tesla Motors will be included in the Nasdaq 100, a list of the largest non-financial stocks on Nasdaq's index. A spot in that elite group opened up when Oracle announced that it would be moving to the New York Stock Exchange, making it inelegible for inclusion on Nasdaq. The news seemed to please shareholders, and at the time of this writing, Tesla's stock had surged ahead nearly 2 percent. The company's entry into the Nasdaq 100 is a sure sign that its forward trajectory is nigh unstoppable -- at least for now. With an overall stock gain of nearly 260 percent in 2013, Tesla Motors just keeps on truckin'.

JVC's upgraded GC-XA2 ADIXXION action camera is really, really hard to put down
Look, we all know someone suffering from an insatiable appetite for [insert vice here]. But if you've ever met someone who picked up the OG ADIXXION, you probably understand just how fixated on a single product one can become. Keeping the fix going is JVC, who has introduced the latest -- and perhaps most addicting -- ADIXXION yet. The GC-XA2 is obviously designed to rival anything in the space that GoPro presently owns, boasting a water-, shock-, dust- and freeze-proof enclosure and mounting options galore.
Performance improvements in the new model include 1,920 x 1,080 60p/50p Progressive Full HD recording, and 1,280 x 720 high-speed recording at 120fps / 100fps for 4x slow-motion playback. ther upgrades include a brighter and wider-angle optical lens, improved image stabilization, a higher-resolution LCD monitor with auto-off and auto-brightness functions, a higher-resolution image sensor, a higher audio bit rate and better noise reduction. It'll start shipping later this month for a hair under $300... just don't go stealing from your mum in order to finance it, okay?

Outbound calls from desktop Gmail are back, with free calling to the US and Canada

Today Google has brought back the ability to make phone calls from desktop Gmail, Google+ and via its Chrome extension, and also announced that calls to the US and Canada are free (from countries where Hangouts calling is available. The feature disappeared when Google introduced its new Hangouts setup, but a post on the Gmail blog claims that now it's better than ever. According to the company, "Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice," with making and receiving calls just the beginning. For now, users can enjoy new features like adding multiple phone numbers and video participants to the same call, and using sound effects from the Google Effects app. Current Hangouts users should see a new phone icon in Gmail, or a "call a phone" menu item in Google+ and the Chrome extension.

Satellite startup Kymeta announces $50 million in funding from Bill Gates and other backers
It's been nearly a year since Intellectual Ventures announced its satellite communications spinoff Kymeta, but a recent round of funding from heavyweight backers is about to give the company some serious momentum. In a press release today, Kymeta announced $50 million in Series C financing from Bill Gates, Liberty Global and Lux Capital, among other high-profile investors. The company, which is developing a portable satellite broadband receiver under the mTenna brand, currently counts Gates among its board members. Though its products have yet to hit the market, Kymeta's A-list backing has generated significant interest in its tech, which utilizes metamaterials to deliver stronger broadband signals in a more affordable, energy-efficient package. The company is already in talks with several service providers, and this latest influx of cash should only help expedite development agreements and a commercial launch.

A clear look at LG's upcoming Optimus G2 (update 2: video)
There's still one month to go before LG officially unveils its Optimus G successor, but thanks to an anonymous tipster, we have a pretty clear idea of what it'll look like. Similar to the G2 leaks we've seen in the past, this upcoming Android flagship falls more in line with the (LG-made) Nexus 4's rounded-edge design than the blockiness of the original Optimus G. As you can see in the image above, the purported G2's 5.2-inch, 1080p display is surrounded by very little bezel, making it appear near edge-to-edge. LG's also foregoing the three capacitive Android navigation buttons featured on the original G in favor of an onscreen (stock Android-like) arrangement. On back, we can clearly see LG is indeed going forward with that quirky volume rocker placement, which puts the controls just below the camera -- rumored to be a 13-megapixel module.
Further corroborating earlier reports and LG's own official confirmation, our tipster pegs the G2's processor as a Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz and paired with 2GB RAM. And although there are no visible signs of carrier branding on its glossy chassis, this particular G2 variant is supposedly headed to Sprint. Which, if true, lines up with the legacy set by the Sprint Optimus G -- a device that also launched free of the Now Network's logo. Apart from a few screens showing the launcher, camera UI and one of LG's various lockscreen options, there's not much more we know about its spec list (i.e. battery size). Though we fully expect more details to leak out in the run-up to August 7th. For now, check out the mini-gallery below and an additional, close up photo of the G2's volume rocker just after the break.
Update: We've received additional photos of the G2's settings menu confirming this model as a Sprint variant running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
Update 2: 4Leakz has posted a video (after the break) showing the G2 in action. Reportedly, the phone is "very comfortable" and reminiscent of the Nexus 4, but thinner.

AT&T teases July 16th event, wants us to 'get ready for what's next'
AT&T is attempting to cater to the Boy / Girl Scout in each of us: the carrier wants us to be prepared for what's coming. What this particular piece of news is, we're not quite certain, but it's apparently something AT&T is rather proud of. Beneath the teaser, the company boasts quotes from various publications about the strength, speed and expansiveness of its network, which means this is likely related to something in that sphere. Based on that, we're hoping this means we'll hear some promising news about LTE-Advanced; either way, we'll be waiting until July 16th to learn more about what the company has planned.

Nokia to update Here Drive and Transit apps, release Drive+ for all WP8 handsets
Nokia's Here Drive+ global sat-nav app for Windows Phone 8, currently exclusive to certain Lumia handsets,
will be available to all devices running Redmond's mobile OS when it
gets updated "by the end of this week." In addition to wider
availability, the app refresh will see the integration of local traffic
information and bring a "more intuitive user interface." Also, the new
My Commute feature will make its debut, which monitors traffic along
your common route and gives you an estimated travel time so you can plan
accordingly. It'll also let you know if things change while you're on
the road and offer up different routes if it spots a jam up ahead. An
identical update will be applied to Here Drive, the non-exclusive
version of Drive+ that's tied to one country (read: local navigation
license). In tandem with the Drive apps, Nokia's Here Transit app for
planning journeys on public transport will be updated with a redesigned
user interface.
Drive+ global navigation doesn't come free, however, even for those packing a Lumia 720, 520 or 521 variant
(those handsets only have the standard Drive app pre-installed). A
global license which turns Drive into Drive+ costs 15.49 euro (nearly
$20) in some countries, such as the US, Canada and the UK, and 34.99
euro (almost $45) elsewhere; Here Transit will also come at a price of
1.99 euro (around $2.50) in these regions. There's table after the break
which neatly lays out what costs what where, and you can hit up the PR
if you feel you haven't done enough reading already.

They have the technology? US government briefly shows iOS on a Lumia 920 (updated)

In a 30-second PSA about its wireless emergency alerts, the US government has adopted a similar approach to those fictional smartphone mash-ups we've seen on the TV. The ad shows those familiar WinPho buttons housed within a white polycarbonate Lumia 900 Lumia 920, paired with a less familiar iOS 6 lock screen. Now, as with those broody serials
we love so much, we doubt there's any grounding in reality, but FEMA,
somewhere, you're making a wishful Apple and Nokia fan's dreams (appear
to) come true. Check it out after the break.
Update:
As very many of you have spotted, that distinct bottom can only belong
to a Lumia 920, rather than the 900 as we originally reported. We stand
corrected!

Scientists want next Mars rover to search for signs of life, test out astronaut tech
NASA really wants to put another rover on the surface of Mars in 2020. The goals of that mission are still being ironed out, but a panel of 19 scientists appointed by the space agency have come up with some rather compelling suggestions. Over the course of a 154-page document, which will serve as the starting point, the scientists propose that looking for signs of life and testing out technologies for a future manned mission should be high on the list of objectives. The Mars 2020 Science Definition Team wants the next rover, based on Curiosity's design, to look for biosignatures and fossilized evidence of former life on the red planet. In addition, they're calling for the rover to serve as a sort of screener for rock and soil samples, by analyzing them and saving particularly interesting ones for return to Earth for further investigation. The team is proposing room for as many as 31 samples which would be retrieved later by a manned mission.
The next step will be for NASA officials to sit down with the sizable tome, and probably a few of the panel members, to figure out what the highest priority objectives are and what is feasible given technological and budgetary constraints. Then it will begin accepting proposals for instrumentation to be loaded on the new rover. One of the more ambitious proposals is to demonstrate technology for collecting carbon dioxide which could be used to make oxygen and rocket fuel. If you're interested, the entire report can be found at the source.

France removes disconnection penalty from three-strikes anti-piracy law
The most contentious part of France's three-strikes law has been the suspension clause: one (alleged) piracy offense too many and you're cut off from the internet. The country is backing off from that aggressive policy with a new decree banning disconnections. From now on, judges can only issue fines after the third violation. The Hadopi agency created alongside the law is also going away, with the Higher Audiovisual Council taking over its duties. France's Minister of Culture and Communication, Aurélie Filippetti, explains the softened penalty as a matter of focus -- it's large-scale piracy that matters, she says. While some would question the need for any graduated system, we're glad that France at least sees the bigger picture on digital bootlegging.
