Android 4.2.2 lands on HTC Butterfly, brings Sense 5 to last-gen handsets
Flash-happy Droid DNA owners have had access to HTC's latest Android skin for awhile now, but the company is finally delivering Sense 5 to its older phones in an official capacity -- at least in Taiwan. According to Engadget Chinese, users of the Taiwanese Droid DNA variant, the HTC Butterfly, can now download a Sense 5 flavored Android 4.2.2 update, delivered in two packages: one to prep the system, and one to actually upgrade the device. HTC previously said that some of the skin's features would be exclusive to the HTC One, but it should be noted that BlinkFeed isn't one of them, as the content aggregator seems to be alive and kicking on the updated Butterfly. No word yet if this update will make its way to our local Droid DNA, but we wouldn't be surprised: it's pretty much the same phone.

Maker Camp 2013 kicks off six weeks of DIY fun for teens (video)
Ah, summer camp. Those halcyon days of imagining every creepy nighttime sound is a hungry, angry bear. Starting today, Google and Make (the brains behind Maker Faire) are launching a different kind of summer extravaganza with Maker Camp, a free six-week program open to Google+ users between the ages of 13 and 18. The online camp will offer daily DIY activities -- like a bike-powered phone charger -- with a live Google+ Hangout to discuss the project with expert makers. Additionally, campers will go on virtual field trips every Friday to places they otherwise might never see, like NASA's Ames Research Center. This year, Maker Camp will also include affiliate campsites at local libraries and youth centers, stocked with nifty gadgets like soldering kits, LEDs, Raspberry Pi boards and Arduino microcontrollers. For more info, check out the video after the break or register by following Make on Google+. Hungry, angry bears need not apply.

Sprint Galaxy S 4 update adds Knox, app installs on SD cards
Samsung's big Galaxy S 4 update hit Europe a month ago; it's now spreading to the US through Sprint. The American patch adds much of what we saw in its international counterpart, including the option of moving supporting apps to the SD card. Business-minded customers also get access to the Knox security suite. Just be careful about upgrading if you're planning to install a custom ROM -- XDA-Developers members report that the bootloader has changed, but they haven't yet verified whether or not it's locked down. Those who aren't concerned about flexible firmware should receive the update soon, though, and we're hoping that other US carriers aren't far behind.

OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 3 now being served up
Cupertino's clearly in the mood to churn out beta releases today. Just a few hours after unleashing the third iOS 7 beta, Apple's dished out OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 3. The House that Jobs Built is remaining tight-lipped about what the update contains, but it's safe to say it packs a usual suspect: bug fixes. Devs raring to snap up the latest release can click the bordering source link for the download. However, if you're not of the (Apple-approved) programmer persuasion, you can experience the operating system vicariously through our preview.

Squito throwable camera prototyped, search and rescue a fastball away
The last time we ran down the sidewalk while throwing a camera, it turned into a pile of dust. Inventor Steve Hollinger's looking to fix that with the Squito. Hollinger's latest patent for a throwable camera piggybacks onto the one he filed three years ago, bringing detailed usage and a functional prototype along for the ride. The description was vague and unwieldy before, but now the Squito is detailed as a "ball with camera and trajectory control for reconnaissance or recreation." It looks much better than the last panoramic ball camera we saw, too. The video after the break demos the test unit's dramatic possibilities, and we'd be lying if what we saw didn't excite us. When was the last time you watched a video with wireless infrared, kitty rescue and 3D mapping anyhow?

BMW i3 may reach the US in January, start at about $34,500
Americans have been jonesing for BMW's i3 for awhile, but the automaker has yet to answer two of their bigger questions: when, and how much? Our colleagues at Autoblog may have the answers. They understand that the car's pure electric edition should reach US customers in January, with pricing starting around $34,500; Europeans should get theirs in November for €35,000. The range-extended version with a two-cylinder generator will reportedly add about $2,000 to the cost (€2,000 in Europe) and arrive two months later. BMW hasn't confirmed any of the details, so don't call your dealer -- but don't be surprised if the entry luxury EV is relatively affordable.

Netflix and CBS extend streaming deal, add CSI: NY and other shows
CBS has just let the ink dry on a contract extending its streaming deal with Netflix, and in addition to keeping existing content, the duo is adding a handful of new TV shows. While L.A. Complex and The 4400 are now slated for online viewing, only the freshly-added CSI: NY is ready to stream. Mum's the word on exactly how long this agreement will last, but if previous pacts are any indication, shows like Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone will be streaming for at least another two years. If you're waiting for the new programs to hit the service, there's a whole mess of Star Trek to keep you busy in the meantime.

Must See HDTV (July 8th - 14th)
After a long holiday weekend we have a few new things to look forward to including NCAA Football 14, season two of The Newsroom and the season premiere of Top Gear. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.
The Bridge
FX is debuting a new drama this week, as The Bridge follows cops from the US and Mexico on the trail of a serial killer. Similar to The Killing it's a remake of a foreign series, although that one featured Denmark and Sweden. Although AMC's show had its issues, after efforts like The Americans and Wilfred from FX we're willing to give this one a shot.
(July 10th, FX, 10PM)
Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black debuts at 3:01 AM ET Thursday on Netflix in all regions, but it's already signed up for a second season on the streaming service. Fans of Showtime's Weeds may be looking forward to it the most, since both comedy-dramas were created by Jenji Kohan. Set in a women's prison, OITNB follows a new inmate sentenced to fifteen months for her part in moving drug money a decade earlier. We'll find out in a few days if Netflix has another hit on its hands, after that the next original series up should be Ricky Gervais' Derek.

US reportedly uses security agreements to intercept data from undersea fiber optic lines
The US government has clear incentives to safeguard against internet attacks coming through undersea fiber optic lines, but the Washington Post now hears that they're stretching the law to make this happen. The newspaper claims that federal agencies push foreign fiber operators into Network Security Agreements that, while public, are used for eavesdropping that isn't covered under their terms. In the case of an old deal with Global Crossing, the telecom firm had to allow short-notice government visits and even keep top executives in the dark. The FCC reportedly serves as the bargaining chip, delaying cable licenses until providers agree to the terms. Government officials maintain that their surveillance is legal, although that's cold comfort -- the New York Times and Wall Street Journal both allege that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has reinterpreted laws to let the NSA collect more information than it would otherwise.

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch steps down; Michael Huseby appointed CEO of Nook Media
Following reports earlier this year that Barnes & Noble may be sliding away from producing its own Nook hardware, the outfit's CEO has just stepped away from his corner office. Announced in a series of shuffles, William Lynch has resigned as chief executive officer and director of the company effective immediately, while Michael P. Huseby has been appointed CEO of the Nook Media division (as well as president of B&N as a whole).
The firm also announced that vice president Allen Lindstrom was being subsequently promoted to CFO, reporting to Huseby. Moreover, Kanuj Malhotra -- VP of corporate development, has been promoted to CFO of Nook Media. Chairman Leonard Riggio thanked Lynch for his leadership during an era where B&N emerged as a real rival to Amazon in the reader / tablet market, while the man himself said that he "appreciated the opportunity to serve as CEO over the last three years." As for his immediate plans? Kicking back on the shores of Ocracoke and reading a book... on a Nook, of course.

Virgin Media launches Play Games portal for TiVo
Many of us don't see TiVos as game consoles, but Virgin Media would beg to differ -- there have been over a million game sessions this year on its edition of the DVR. Accordingly, it just launched a Play Games portal to court this growing audience. Besides putting games in one handy location, the hub saves game states and ranks favorite titles. Virgin is also recruiting more developers to expand Play Games' fledgling catalog. While the casual gaming focus is unlikely to stop serious players from pre-ordering an Xbox One or PS4, it may be enough to keep TiVo owners on the couch long after their favorite show is over.

Android's Jelly Bean contingent finally surpasses Gingerbread
It's a new era, we tell ya. An era where Google can finally say that its latest build of Android is also the one being used by the greatest majority of Android users. For over a year, Android 4.1+ has been the most up-to-date build of Google's mobile OS, and yet, the greatest majority of those accessing the Play Store were using a build that was bordering on antediluvian. According to the official Developers Dashboard, the percentages have slid to a point where Android Jelly Bean -- which encompasses 4.1.x and 4.2.x -- now represents 37.9 percent of Play Store users. Gingerbread (v2.3.3 through 2.3.7) has fallen to second place with 34.1 percent, while Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3 through 4.0.4) holds down the bronze with 23.3 percent. Hit up the source link to view the full breakdown, and do us a solid -- if you know someone still using Donut, grab 'em a Christmas-in-July present.

Imagination Tech CEO: 'The industry needs MIPS as much as MIPS needs the industry'
At an earlier press event in Shenzhen, Imagination Technologies' CEO Sir Hossein Yassaie delivered a clear message: his company's $100 million acquisition of MIPS isn't a short term strategy. Additionally, he has ambitious plans with the latter's chip architecture -- a well-known rival of ARM and Intel's x86.
In his presentation, Yassaie boasted that there are currently over 300 SoCs based on MIPS. And out of the five billion devices shipped with Imagination Tech's IP to date, three billion of them use MIPS. These include phones, tablets (especially in China), wearables, printers, networking devices, storage devices and more.

New BlackBerry Bold 9270 spotted, runs old BB7 OS
We're right in the middle of putting BlackBerry's gently priced Q5
through review testing, but the latest phone leak from Waterloo (well,
Thailand actually) doesn't run BB10 at all and will presumably weigh in
at an even lower price tag. According to ThaiBBClub, the Bold 9720 you see before you will run on OS version 7, with all the requisite legacy hardware keys and menus. While it looks nothing like the 9900-mimicking Bold 9790
that came before it, there's still a full square-ish keyboard (with
contoured keys), as well as a striped finish on the back that'll be
familiar to the BB faithful still out there. Unfortunately, there's
nothing leaked resembling a spec sheet, but you can visit the source
link for a full gallery tour.

Clearwire shareholders approve buyout by Sprint
Well, the FCC has already offered its tacit approval of the merger between Sprint, Clearwire and Softbank. And Sprint shareholders are on board with its buyout by Softbank. Really, the last hurdle for this major wireless marriage, was Clearwire's shareholders. Now they've approved the plan to be purchased by Sprint, which in turn will be absorbed by Softbank, putting an end to a long drama over the tiny carrier's future. When Dish decided to exit the bidding war over the company in late June it seemed to be all but a done deal that Sprint, already a majority shareholder of Clearwire, would take over the rest of the company. The deal is expected to be officially closed on July 9th, followed only shortly after by the Sprint and Softbank merger on July 10th.

Twitter updates apps with direct message syncing and improved search results
Remember that raucous applause that occurred when the WWDC crowd was told that Notification Center clearings would be synced across devices in iOS 7? If you listen carefully, you'll hear something similar happening today from the Twitter faithful. At long last, the company has updated its litany of apps with support for direct message syncing -- in other words, a DM that you reply to on your Nexus 7 will no longer show as an unread message on your iPhone.
All told, seven different programs are seeing an update: Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com and TweetDeck (sorry, Windows Phone users!). For Android, iPhone, iPad and mobile.twitter.com, the outfit's making search result improvements as well; additionally, a new in-app indicator in search results will show you when there are new Tweets for your query. Google Now just a swipe away on HTC One with Android 4.2.2 update
It's not the rumored Jelly Bean 4.3 update for the One, but these latest software tweaks should make current owners happy nonetheless. HTC's begun rolling out an Android 4.2.2 OTA update to unlocked handsets that lops off the legacy menu button in favor of extending the Home button's functionality. Similar to stock builds of Jelly Bean, One users can now choose to access Google Now with a quick swipe up from Home, while relegating a longpress for options. There's also a quick settings panel built into the dropdown notification pane, so toggles for WiFi, airplane mode, Bluetooth, etc are just a few less clicks away. HTC's tossed in other minor tweaks, like a battery level indicator and a file format change for Zoe that streamlines your gallery, plus the requisite bug fixes. It's already hitting handsets across the pond, so if you haven't seen the update prompt yet, hold tight.
