US government asks Hong Kong to extradite NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden
The Justice Department has charged former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden with espionage and theft of government property in the NSA surveillance case. Officials have also asked the Hong Kong authorities to extradite the former government contractor who leaked the details of the NSA's top-secret PRISM data collection program.
Snowden, believed to be holed up in Hong Kong, has admitted providing information to the media about two highly classified NSA surveillance programs. A one-page criminal complaint unsealed Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, says Snowden engaged in unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information. Snowden now faces 30-years in prison, as the U.S. government asks Hong Kong to extradite NSA leaker and charges him with espionage.
us_government_asks_hong_kong_to_extradite_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden
Both are charges under the Espionage Act. Snowden also is charged with theft of government property. All three crimes carry a maximum 10-year prison penalty. The federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia where the complaint was filed is headquarters for Snowden's former employer, government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. The complaint is dated June 14, five days after Snowden's name first surfaced as the leaker of information about the two programs in which the NSA gathered telephone and Internet records to ferret out terror plots. This could become an integral part of a U.S. government effort to have Snowden extradited from Hong Kong, a process that could turn into a prolonged legal battle. Snowden could contest extradition on grounds of political persecution. In general, the extradition agreement between the U.S. and Hong Kong excludes political offenses from the obligation to turn over a person.
Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed the charges. "I've always thought this was a treasonous act," he said in a statement. "I hope Hong Kong's government will take him into custody and extradite him to the U.S." Michael di Pretoro, a retired 30-year veteran with the FBI who served from 1990 to 1994 as the legal liaison officer at the American consulate in Hong Kong, said, "relations between U.S. and Hong Kong law enforcement personnel are historically quite good. In my time, I felt the degree of cooperation was outstanding to the extent that I almost felt I was in an FBI field office."
us_government_asks_hong_kong_to_extradite_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden
The U.S. and Hong Kong cooperate on law enforcement matters and have a standing agreement on the surrender of fugitives. However, Snowden's appeal rights could drag out any extradition proceeding. The success or failure of any extradition proceeding depends on what the suspect is charged with under U.S. law and how it corresponds to Hong Kong law under the treaty. In order for Hong Kong officials to honor the extradition request, they have to have some applicable statute under their law that corresponds with a violation of U.S. law. News of the charges broke on Friday evening, the same day it emerged that Snowden could be flown to Iceland from Hong Kong by the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks. A businessman connected to the controversial website said a chartered private jet is ready for the 30-year-old, who fled to Hong Kong after leaking U.S security details. It comes after Iceland admitted holding talks with Snowden over the possibility of seeking political asylum. Olafur Sigurvinsson, head of DataCell, which handles donations to Wikileaks, revealed details of the private jet. Speaking to Channel2 television, he said: "Everything is ready on our side and the plane could take off tomorrow. We have really done all we can do. We have a plane and all the logistics in place." The jet is believed to belong to a Chinese firm and has been chartered at a cost of $240,000.
In a column in Icelandic daily newspaper Frettabladid, WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson wrote that a middleman had approached him on behalf of Snowden. "On 2 June, I received a message from Edward Snowden where he asked me to notify the Icelandic government that he wanted to seek asylum in Iceland," Hrafnsson, who is also an investigative journalist in Iceland, told Reuters. He added that he has yet to receive a response from officials about his request but said they have a "moral obligation" to answer the call for help. The Icelandic government, which has refused to say whether they would grant asylum to Snowden, confirmed it had received the message from Hrafnsson. "Kristinn Hrafnsson has contacted two ministries in an informal way but not the ministers," a government spokesman said. "There has been no formal approach in this matter."
us_government_asks_hong_kong_to_extradite_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden
Hrafnsson would not identify who the middleman was. Snowden has previously mentioned Iceland as a possible refuge. Iceland has a reputation for promoting Internet freedoms, but Snowden has said he did not travel there immediately from the United States as he feared the country could be pressured by Washington. "Iceland could be pushed harder, quicker, before the public could have a chance to make their feelings known, and I would not put that past the current U.S. administration," Snowden said in an online forum in the Guardian on Monday. It had been suggested that he would actually flee to the Icelandic consulate in Hong Kong, rather than risking boarding a plane to fly there in person. Icelandic officials told USA Today last week that Snowden is missing a key element. "The main stipulation for seeking asylum in Iceland would be that the person must be in Iceland to start the process," said Johannes Tomasson, the chief spokesman for Iceland's Ministry of Interior in Reykjavik. "That would be the ground rule No. 1."
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over allegations of sex crimes, visited Iceland several times in the run-up to some of the website's major releases. Assange denies any wrongdoing. Yet some experts added that Iceland might not be as welcoming as Snowden hopes. The government of newly-elected Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson has not been tested in relation to these cases, but is believed to be closer to Washington than past administrations and less keen to foster the country's cyber-haven image. "I would be very surprised if they (the government) would be eager to engage in any international disputes with the U.S. And it is pretty difficult to be granted asylum here," Stefania Oskarsdottir, lecturer in political science at the University of Iceland, told Reuters. "I think what this guy is saying is based on something he is imagining or hoping for rather than actual facts."
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange revealed on Wednesday he had been in contact with Snowden's representatives to discuss his possible bid for asylum in Iceland. The former US government contractor fled to Hong Kong on May 20 after leaking National Security Agency programs. It also emerged that a contractor for the National Security Agency found possible discrepancies in a resume submitted by Edward Snowden, but the company still employed him, a source said on Thursday. Snowden was hired this spring after he convinced his hiring screeners at Booz Allen Hamilton, that his description of his education was truthful.
Snowden fled his home in Hawaii, where he worked for NSA contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, after exposing the U.S. government's top surveillance secrets. He is currently at a secret location in Hong Kong. It is unclear precisely which element of Snowden's resume has caused personnel officials at Booz Allen Hamilton to raise questions about his background. Also unclear is how he satisfied their concerns. Booz Allen Hamilton has said in a statement that "we will work closely with our clients and authorities in their investigation of this matter."

Digital health-sensing clothes may be hitting the mainstream sooner than we think
Smart fabrics belong no longer in the realm of science fiction. Someday soon, having to remember to put on your digital health tracking device in the morning might no longer be an issue. If the latest crop of health-minded wearables companies succeed, health sensors will make their way into things we are already wearing--like undershirts, underwear, and socks.
Digital health wearables are slowly but surely making their way into clothing. One longtime digital health company, Maryland-based Zephyr Technology, introduced its Zephyr BioHarness 3 Team Compression Shirt at a strength training event in Rhode Island last summer. The fabric of the shirt itself doesn't have any sensors integrated into it, but it is designed so that the company's BioHarness 3 can snap into place right where it should be on the wearer's chest. The shirt is similar to the one Zephyr used to power for Under Armor, called E39, which was famously used in the NFL Combine in 2011.
Since then, smart fabrics have evolved and new start-ups are springing up to bring them to market. Omsignal - a company which just announced a $1 million seed round from Real Ventures, Golden Venture Partners, and TechStars CEO David Cohen - is in early production with an undershirt that has sensors woven into the fabric. The shirt captures ECG, activity, breathing patterns and "emotive" states on a continuous basis and presents that data to the wearer via an app on their mobile device. While the shirt can track ECG, the app doesn't show it in that form because the company itself isn't looking to make the shirt an FDA regulated medical device.
digital_health_sensing_clothes_may_be_hitting_the_mainstream_sooner_than_we_think
Today, dozens of people are testing OMsignal's compression shirt--including people from high profile companies like Facebook and Google to create a buzz around the new product--not unlike Google's marketing plan for Google Glass. The company also has a bra version of the wearable. OMsignal co-founder and Chief Product Officer Frederic Chanay said: "Others have come at this from a textile perspective or an electronics perspective, but if you go from only one perspective, it is not going to work. If you want to do a shirt that is comfortable, wearable, washable and manufacturable at scale, you need to understand and respect textile technology."
digital_health_sensing_clothes_may_be_hitting_the_mainstream_sooner_than_we_think
While most of the sensors are made out of smart textiles and woven into the shirt, OMsignal still requires its early users to wear a clip-on device that houses the accelerometer and the Bluetooth radio. Chanay says that while this device is currently about one-third the size of an iPhone, the company is working to make it smaller and get it integrated into the garment itself, too. OMsignal aims to get this piece of the device much smaller and, in time, maybe even down to the size of a shirt button.
Meanwhile, a couple of former Xbox Kinect developers have left Microsoft to create Heapsylon, a company that is developing sensor-laden socks. The socks, which the inventors call Sensoria and claim are washable and comfortable--not scratchy--are launching with very detailed tracking capabilities for runners. Some of the things the sock can track include: cadence, pronation, heel-striking, and I would imagine they might claim to be more accurate trackers of steps than their wrist-worn ancestors.
digital_health_sensing_clothes_may_be_hitting_the_mainstream_sooner_than_we_think
Of course, Misfit Wearables is also likely to offer up some kind of sensor-laden piece of clothing later this year or early next--the company's second trademark filing, which was granted this past April, makes that pretty clear. According to the trademark filing, the company is focused on: "Clothing, namely, outer jackets, shirts, pants, footwear, shoe soles, headwear and undergarments, all the foregoing having health monitoring sensors embedded."
digital_health_sensing_clothes_may_be_hitting_the_mainstream_sooner_than_we_think
One thing is pretty certain: As monitoring sensor technology evolves and design/production costs are reduced, it is only a matter of time before bio-sensors really hit the mainstream clothing ranges. So, your future clothes may be able to monitor your vitals and even automatically alert emergency response services on your behalf when it senses that you are incapacitated. Such extensive application of health sensor technology into everyday garments could actually save the lives of a lot of people in the future.

WikiLeaks' Assange urges support for Snowden, slams Obama 'betrayal'
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has urged the world today to "stand with" Edward Snowden, the man who admitted leaking top-secret details about U.S. surveillance programs, according to the text of a speech posted on Twitter. As he appealed for a "brave country" to step forward and offer Snowden asylum, Assange also accused U.S. President Barack Obama of betraying a generation of "young, technically minded people." He was scheduled to speak from the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Saturday, but the appearance was postponed at short notice "due to a security situation," WikiLeaks said on Twitter."
wikileaks_assange_urges_support_for_snowden_slams_obama_betrayal
Wednesday marked a year since Assange sought refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations that he raped one woman and sexually molested another. The WikiLeaks founder has repeatedly maintained that the allegations in Sweden are politically motivated and tied to the work of his website. Ecuador's government granted him asylum in August 2012, but British authorities have said they will arrest him if he leaves the premises. As a result of his decision to seek refuge in the embassy, "I have been able to work in relative safety from a U.S. espionage investigation," said Assange, according to the text of the speech. "But today, Edward Snowden's ordeal is just beginning."
wikileaks_assange_urges_support_for_snowden_slams_obama_betrayal
Assange's words came hours after Snowden was charged by U.S. federal prosecutors with espionage and theft of government property, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in U.S. District Court in Virginia on Friday. Snowden, 30, has admitted in interviews that he was the source behind the leak of classified documents about the NSA's surveillance programs. Those leaks were the basis of reports this month in Britain's Guardian newspaper and The Washington Post. He is believed to be in hiding in Hong Kong. The United States has asked authorities there to detain the former National Security Agency contract analyst on a provisional arrest warrant, The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
Assange, in his published speech, said the espionage charge had come "like clockwork," making Snowden the eighth "leaker" to be charged with that count by the Obama administration. "Two dangerous runaway processes have taken root in the last decade, with fatal consequences for democracy," he said. "Government secrecy has been expanding on a terrific scale. Simultaneously, human privacy has been secretly eradicated. The U.S. government is spying on each and every one of us, but it is Edward Snowden who is charged with espionage for tipping us off." Also among the eight "leakers" is WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning, Assange said. Manning is being court-martialed on charges he aided U.S. enemies by leaking documents he obtained as an Army intelligence analyst. He named the others as Barrett Brown, Jeremy Hammond, Aaron Swartz, Gottfrid Svartholm and Jacob Appelbaum.
wikileaks_assange_urges_support_for_snowden_slams_obama_betrayal
Assange suggested Obama was the real "traitor" for his failure to live up to his promises of hope, change, and transparency in government. And he warned that the U.S. government will lose the battle if it tries to take on the tech-savvy people now calling its actions into question. "Edward Snowden is one of us. Bradley Manning is one of us. They are young, technically minded people from the generation that Barack Obama betrayed. They are the generation that grew up on the Internet, and were shaped by it," the WikiLeaks leader continued. "The U.S. government is always going to need intelligence analysts and systems administrators, and they are going to have to hire them from this generation and the ones that follow it. One day, they will run the CIA and the FBI. This isn't a phenomenon that is going away." Assange also added that charging Snowden "is intended to intimidate any country that might be considering standing up for his rights" and appealed for efforts to find asylum for him to be intensified.

Respawn's Titanfall won't include single player, says 'for us it made sense'
I've been waiting for what seems like years for Respawn Entertainment to unveil their game, which we saw at E3 as Titanfall. Respawn is a company made up of the ex-Infinity Ward guys, Vince Zampella and Jason West.
respawn_s_titanfall_won_t_include_single_player_says_for_us_it_made_sense
We've found out some more information on their upcoming shooter, which won't be including a single player campaign. This means Titanfall is a multiplayer only title, but it also gives the developer the benefit of putting all power into the single side of the game instead of splitting up people into separate groups. Respawn head, Vince Zampella has said that he considers the studio a "small startup" with "60 some developers", stating it's better to focus their resources where they'll be better utilized.
Zampella adds:
We make these single-player missions that take up all the focus of the studio, that take a huge team six months to make, and players run through it in eight minutes. And how many people finish the single-player game? It's a small percentage. It's like, everyone plays through the first level, but 5% of people finish the game. Really, you split the team. They're two different games. They're balanced differently, they're scoped differently. But people spend hundreds of hours in the multiplayer experience versus 'as little time as possible rushing to the end' [in single-player]. So why do all the resources go there? To us it made sense to put it here. Now everybody sees all those resources, and multiplayer is better. For us it made sense.
Titanfall will be arriving on the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC in early 2014.

HTC carves down executive pay after continued damages to their finances
HTC have been hurting for quite sometime now, with Apple and Samsung sucking up those precious consumers and even more precious profits. It looks like the Taiwanese company is cutting up executive pay, according to the Wall Street Journal.
htc_carves_down_executive_pay_after_continued_damages_to_their_finances
Compensation reached $22 million last year, with this figure including salaries, retirement pay, bonuses and profit sharing. These numbers are down 51.3% compared to the $45 million paid in the previous year. HTC chief executive Peter Chou and engineering and operations president, Fred Liu, saw their pay packages drop to $3.3 million last year - the first time in two years - with other executives seeing similar reductions.
We could see things turn around with Robert Downey Jr stepping up as the face of HTC, where the company will hand Iron Man himself $12 million to promote HTC around the world. Both HTC and Downey haven't confirmed the deal, but I'm sure we'll hear about it in the days and weeks to come, if it turns out to be true.

If Apple doesn't turn things around, CEO Tim Cook could lose hundreds of millions of dollars in shares
Apple has had a shocking past twelve months or so, where we've seen them fall from grace, and fast. I called it out, and was one of the first to see they were about to stumble, and now everyone else seems to have jumped on the TT bandwagon, which is nice.
if_apple_doesn_t_turn_things_around_ceo_tim_cook_could_lose_hundreds_of_millions_of_dollars_in_shares
Now it seems that Tim Cook is about to feel all of that pain, with Apple's board changing the way the CEO's pay packet is handled. Here's what will happen: If Apple's stock outperforms the market over the next eight years, Cook will keep the one million Apple shares he has now - which he was set to receive no matter what happened to Apple stock. But, if Apple's stock continues to dwindle, which I think it will, Cook could lose up to 40% of his shares.
When Apple first gave Cook his original package, those one million shares were worth $376 million. At the peak of Apple's shares at the end of last year, those shares were worth a cool $705 million, and today? Just $413 million. Apple filed a document with the SEC, which says Cook "has the full support of the Board of Directors", noting that the way they give out bonuses is being changed to all of Apple's top execs.
Apple finishes by saying that Cook is "leading this initiative by example" and has pushed the Apple board to add more risk to his package, which is done in two ways:

  • There's no upside to Cook's new comp setup. That is, if Apple shares do really well, he'll still only get the shares he was promised back in 2011.

  • Apple says it wanted to put less of Cook's shares at risk, "because Mr. Cook faces only downside risk from the modification." But it says Cook "expressed a strong desire to set a leadership example in the area of CEO compensation and governance and requested a larger at-risk percentage."

NSA whistleblower leaks information out about British equivalent of NSA, takes data directly from fiber optic cables
We all know the United States government and their various agencies such as the NSA, FBI and CIA have counterparts across the world - but NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has leaked more documents to The Guardian, which suggest British counterparts also intercept data.
nsa_whistleblower_leaks_information_out_about_british_equivalent_of_nsa_takes_data_directly_from_fiber_optic_cables
The British operation is codenamed "Tempora" by Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and has been in operation for at least 18 months. This operation involves the use of "intercept probes" which are directly attached to transatlantic fiber-optic cables going onto British shores from telephone exchanges and Internet servers in the US. "Intercept partners", or commercial companies as the documents describe them, were secretly used to attach the intercepts on behalf of the GCHQ.
The companies weren't revealed in the documents, but were forced by law to help the GCHQ, and were even paid in some cases. This has allowed the GCHQ to take in countless amounts of data from citizens - with everything from phone calls, to e-mails and Facebook data. The Guardian notes: "For the 2 billion users of the world wide web, Tempora represents a window on to their everyday lives, sucking up every form of communication from the fiber-optic cables that ring the world."
I'd like to raise this question - there are not enough people to work on, and sift through these types of volumes of data that the GCHQ and the NSA (and various other agencies) scoop in. If there were, why is it that Snowden is the only one to step forward? Is everyone else scared of stepping forward? Obviously you'd be targeted, but the people should know of these programs, and know that nothing they do electronically is safe, ever.

Edward Snowden gets slapped with criminal charges by the US government - freedom, what's that?
We all know that you can't just talk about the secret programs the United States government and their multiple tentacles like the NSA run, such as PRISM, and if you do you face criminal charges and are branded with the word 'espionage'.
edward_snowden_gets_slapped_with_criminal_charges_by_the_us_government_freedom_what_s_that
Edward Snowden talked of NSA's top-secret PRISM program, and is now facing charges that include Theft of Government Property, Unauthorized Communications on National Defense Information and "Willful Communication of Classified Information to an Unauthorized Person." My question is, if he is being charged - is this the United States government's way of admitting the system is there? Is now the time for the United States citizens to stand up to the government?
We've seen Bradley Manning thrown away in a hole somewhere, Julian Assange hiding out in another country, Kim Dotcom with multiple hits against him and now Edward Snowden. It seems if you come forth with a nugget of information that they don't want the general public to see, they'll build a case against you with everything they've got. The papers say that the US government has asked Hong Kon to detain Snowden Let's all hope Snowden makes it out of this and the Chinese government don't get on their knees to the Obama administration.

Instagram announces they saw 5M videos uploaded in the first 24 hours of Instagram for Videos
Instagram has shared some statistics about its new videos feature that launched on Thursday. The company notes that they saw five million video uploads in the first 24 hours of the new feature being available. This number surprises me in a few different ways. For one, it shows that Instagram's new video service is viable. At the same time, the number seems lower than I would have thought.
instagram_announces_they_saw_5m_videos_uploaded_in_the_first_24_hours_of_instagram_for_videos
I know at least one of my friends experienced issues with the new feature, sitting for hours waiting for his creative video to process. Other details regarding the new service include that during the Miami Heat championship, users were uploading 40 hours of video every moment.
Watching all of the videos posted during the first eight hours would take a year to do. Whether or not video for Instagram will be able to take down competing Vine remains to be seen. Opinions on the new service have been mixed, with some liking it and some arguing that 15 seconds is too long for a video.

The news comes from a draft report that will be delivered to the FAA. The report didn't dive into cell phone usage during flight as that still remains quite controversial. It's expected that cell phone usage will remain off limits. However, the report does seem to be going with the times and taking new technologies into consideration as part of the update to rules that haven't really been changed since the 1960s.
For us technology users, this is good news. We will no longer have to fake turning off our iPods and other music players during takeoff and landing.

Facebook reports bug that allowed access to 6 million e-mails and phone numbers
Facebook has just reported about a bug that "may have allowed some of a person's contact information (email or phone number) to be accessed by people who either had some contact information about that person or some connection to them."
facebook_reports_bug_that_allowed_access_to_6_million_e_mails_and_phone_numbers
It's important to note that only phone numbers or e-mails were affected. The bug was present in the Download Your Information (DYI) tool. Facebook has a great explanation of what happened:
When people upload their contact lists or address books to Facebook, we try to match that data with the contact information of other people on Facebook in order to generate friend recommendations. For example, we don't want to recommend that people invite contacts to join Facebook if those contacts are already on Facebook; instead, we want to recommend that they invite those contacts to be their friends on Facebook.
Because of the bug, some of the information used to make friend recommendations and reduce the number of invitations we send was inadvertently stored in association with people's contact information as part of their account on Facebook. As a result, if a person went to download an archive of their Facebook account through our Download Your Information (DYI) tool, they may have been provided with additional email addresses or telephone numbers for their contacts or people with whom they have some connection. This contact information was provided by other people on Facebook and was not necessarily accurate, but was inadvertently included with the contacts of the person using the DYI tool.
The bug doesn't likely present a huge security risk as the information was provided about people who were already connected with you in some form or another. This means that it probably isn't an issue if their e-mail or phone number shows up in your data; you likely already have it.
Of course, Facebook needs to be careful as they are the stewards of quite a bit of personal and private information. We're glad that it was just phone numbers and e-mails, but Facebook needs to make sure things like this don't happen in the future.

vizio_s_mt11x_a1_is_an_11_6_inch_windows_8_tablet_powered_by_amd_now_shipping
The AMD Z-60 APU will quickly become outdated with newer Haswell-based CPUs and new Temash-based CPUs. The graphics provided by the APU are definitely quite powerful for a tablet. All of this performance has been packaged into a device that weighs roughly 1.8 pounds and is just 0.4 inches thick. Vizio sacraficed some battery size, resulting in a battery life of up to 5 hours.
The price for this tablet is $600.

Google makes their News offering opt-in only in Germany so as to avoid paying copyright fees
Google has decided to make its News product opt-in only in Germany in light of new copyright laws. The change will take place August 1. After that date, only news sites that have opted-in to the program will have their news stories appear in Google's News search engine.
google_makes_their_news_offering_opt_in_only_in_germany_so_as_to_avoid_paying_copyright_fees
The issue came about because Germany passed a new copyright law that takes place August 1. This law could see Google possibly having to pay publishers fees for indexing and returning snippets of their stories. Google wants to limit liability, so the only way to do that completely is to eliminate everyone and force opt-in.
Interested news publishers can head to Google's Webmaster Tools. Once there, they can opt-in to be indexed and returned as part of Google News. If publishers don't opt-in, they will be removed from the index on August 1.
Google argues that they were providing a free service that increased publishers' traffic. Some German publishers will be sure to opt-in, but a fair amount probably won't.

Tesla shows off new battery pack swapping technology for its Model S, faster than filling up with gas
Tesla Motors, one of Elon Musk's brainchildren, has just shown off its new battery pack swapping technology. At an event in Hawthorne, California, founder Elon Musk explained that the whole process will take around 90 seconds with the driver never exiting the vehicle for the entire process.
During the demonstration, Musk pitted a motorist at the "fastest gas station in California" against not one, but two Tesla Model S vehicles. The Model S battery packs were changed on stage while the petrol fill up took place on site at the gas station.
In the amount of time it took to fill the traditional gas car, both Model S sedans had their battery packs changed in succession with time to spare. The overall gas fill-up took roughly four minutes, while the battery pack swaps only took about 90 seconds each.

Tesla says that the pack swapping service will become available overtime at every Tesla "Supercharger Station" with each station costing roughly $500,000 to build. The first stations will be built on busy corridors such as California's Interstate 5 and will offer the pack swapping service for free if I understood the video correctly.

Sony drops major hints that we will see a smartwatch released next week
We have all heard about the rumors of a smartwatch from Apple and Samsung, but it appears that Sony is going to beat everyone to the punch with the first modern smartwatch. Today the company hinted at a possible smartwatch release next week during the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai.

Sony posted two teasers on its Twitter feed, both of which were accompanied by the clever and original hashtag #itstime and #MAE13. The first image shows a trio of human analogs with the middle one being highlighted and wearing a watch on its wrist. The second tweet shows off what looks to be a rendering of the actual smartwatch itself.

This watch looks quite similar to another watch released by Sony last year and it could just be a stock image Sony is using to keep actual device images from leaking. Either way, we are sure to see some kind of watch device released from Sony next week or you can rely on TweakTown as always for full coverage of the event.

Let the he said, she said battle begin - Leaseweb responds to Megaupload file deletion
Earlier this week, the internet was set abuzz when Kim Dotcom tweeted that all Megaupload files had been deleted by hosting company Leaseweb. Dotcom called the act "a massive data massacre" and took to Twitter to let the world know that petabytes of their data was gone forever.
let_the_he_said_she_said_battle_begin_leaseweb_responds_to_megaupload_file_deletion
Like all arguments, there are two sides to every story and Leaseweb has responded with theirs. Leaseweb says that when the raid took place on Dotcom's home in New Zealand, 60 of the servers directly owned by Megaupload were confiscated by the FIOD and transported to the US. This left 630 dedicated servers rented by Megaupload. These were owned by Leaseweb. Leaseweb says that they took the servers offline, and stored them to preserve data without any request to do so.
let_the_he_said_she_said_battle_begin_leaseweb_responds_to_megaupload_file_deletion
TechSpot says that another one of Megaupload's host, Carpathia, is losing nearly $9000 per day due to inactive Megaupload servers. While this figure is most likely a loss of revenue and not indicative of any out of pocket losses, this still affects the bottom line. If Leaseweb is experiencing similar loses that means that they have lost an estimated $4.9 million dollars due to the idle Megaupload servers.
Leaseweb says that during the year that the servers were offline, they never received any request or payment from Dotcom, Megaupload, or anyone representing either party. Of course Dotcom denies this and has stated that his legal counsel has contacted Leaseweb several times asking them to preserve the data until his trial is over.

Sony to fix bricked PS3 units on June 27th via software patch
Earlier this week, many PlayStation 3 owners were shocked when an official software update bricked their console. The software update caused the system to hang on startup and locked the device from turning off. Owners had to physically unplug the device to simply power it down.

When word began to spread, Sony quickly pulled update version number 4.45 offline and began telling customers not to update their systems until further notice. This morning Sony has released an update on a fix for the broken systems.
On their Twitter account, the company said that they have identified the culprit and are working on a new system update to be released on June 27th that should resolve all issues including the bricked consoles.

After Earth (2013) Cinema Review
after_earth_2013_cinema_review
It would be easy to dismiss After Earth as a nepotistic star vehicle for Will Smith's spawn, directed by the once powerful M. Night Shyamalan, whose career has nosedived into self-parody, his star making project The Sixth Sense an anomaly in an otherwise meritless career. But After Earth has some solid entertainment value and although it's not always reinforced, it well and overcomes the baked-in cynicism and has won over at least one reviewer.
after_earth_2013_cinema_review
In an undefined 'near future', a cataclysm befalls Earth and the inhabitants flee to the distant planet Nova Prime. The Ranger Corps, an elite squad of Prime's protectors are dispatched on a mission to a nearby system, joined by General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) on his final mission along with his son, Kitai (Jaden Smith), who has been freshly denied entry to the corps. En route, the ship is damaged by a volley of asteroids, crash landing on the closest planet - an abandoned Earth, killing all with the exception of Cypher, Kitai, and an enemy combatant; a large and highly dangerous alien life form named Ursa.
Unfortunately, the ships distress beacon is inoperable, Cypher's legs are broken and is fast losing blood and the only hope for their survival; obtaining the distress beacon from the tail end of the ship some hundred kilometers away is a mission that is against the odds. With depleting oxygen supplies, Kita must battle the environmental threats that have evolved in man's absence, all the while evading the alien creature Ursa in order to save his own life, along with that of his father.
after_earth_2013_cinema_review
I'll let you in on a dirty little secret. Many reviewers, myself included, are less than holier than thou. I know - you're shocked! As we become more jaded and cynical, we can become guilty of entering the cinema with pre-conceived notions that require winning over. Admittedly, it's hard not to - we follow movies from conception to delivery and are privy to behind the scenes battles and word from industry spies and early looks through promotional materials. Some production noises are so strong it can lead to the still birth of the product. With this in mind, many reviewers pre-judged After Earth too harshly. After one too many disasters, director M. Night Shyamalan is a liability, rather than an asset to the movie poster and there's always been suspicion of Will Smith's progeny.
after_earth_2013_cinema_review
The genuine surprise is that both Shyamalan and Smith bring their 'A' game. Smith certainly isn't a new star; he's cut his teeth with leading roles in remakes of The Karate Kid and The Day The Earth Stood Still, but with such a huge role in terms of screen time, the film would clearly live or die by the strength of his performance. And here he's rather good indeed. Whilst he hasn't yet developed the charisma which has been crucial to his father's success, he more than makes up for it in raw energy and believability.
after_earth_2013_cinema_review
After Earth is certainly not an instant contemporary sci-fi classic by any stretch, but it is a competent and sometimes exciting feature which displays ample visual flair which aids in papering over some bumps in the script department and helps to solidify the dominance of the Smith family for some time to come. Whether it can rehabilitate Shyamalan's career however remains to be seen.
