Kim Dotcom wins another court battle, gets access to seized property from 2012 raid
Kim Dotcom has won another legal battle in regards to the raid on his mansion back in January 2012. New Zealand's High Court ruled that the warrants used during the raid were illegal. This is good news for Dotcom as it means the police must return all non-relevant assets to Dotcom.

Dotcom isn't completely in the clear as of yet. He still faces a hearing in August that will determine if he will be extradited to the US. If extradited, he will face charges of piracy for his part in Megaupload.

LinkedIn the latest web company to add two-step verification
LinkedIn is the latest web property to join the growing crowd of companies that have implemented a version of two-step authentication. Two-step--or two-factor--authentication make accounts more secure by requiring more than just a password. Users often have to have access to their cell phone to log in on an unrecognized account.

Twitter and Apple both recently added two-step verification. For Twitter, it might have been too little, too late as they had already suffered from a number of high-profile hackings, including one of the AP's account that led to a rapid drop in the Dow Jones from a fake tweet.

Microsoft tries to boost Surface RT sales by offering free keyboard cover with purchase
Now is a great time to get a deal on the Surface RT with keyboard cover. Microsoft, clearly in an attempt to boost sales, is offering a free keyboard cover with purchase of a new Surface RT tablet. The promotion starts today and runs for an undetermined amount of time. Microsoft did note that it is a limited time offer, but didn't specify how limited.

Sales of the Surface RT tablet have been less than ideal for Microsoft. Bloomberg reported back in March that Microsoft had only sold around 1.5 million Surface tablets, with around one million of those believed to be the Surface RT. That number is around half of what Microsoft was expecting.

Google forced to hand over personal user data to FBI by judge
A judge has ruled that Google must comply with the FBI's national security letters that request user data without a warrant. US District Judge Susan Illston, located in San Francisco, has ruled that Google must comply with the requests, despite their protests that they are illegal.

Illston has previously struck down some of the powers granted by NSLs, but some feel it wasn't enough. The EFF is currently involved in a separate lawsuit on behalf of an ISP. Illston notes she does not want to interfere with that lawsuit.

Microsoft 'U-turn' sees Start button returning to Windows 8
Microsoft has confirmed a Start button is returning to the desktop mode's taskbar of its Windows 8 operating system. The lack of the facility - which had been in every previous version since Windows 95 - has been one of the most controversial aspects of the software. The new version will not offer all the functionality previously associated with the feature. Instead it will bring users to the recently-introduced "Metro" interface.

Many users had complained that ditching the traditional Start Menu and introducing the Start Screen had made the system less straight-forward to use, meaning businesses which adopted it would need to retrain staff. Microsoft had been stung by claims that the expected reintroduction of a Start button would mark a major U-turn. An article in the Financial Times described the move as one of the "most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since Coca-Cola's New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago", making reference to the soft drinks company's decision to ditch a new recipe after overwhelming customer dissatisfaction. Microsoft later issued a statement saying it was "unfortunate" the Financial Times did not represent the "good response to date on Windows 8."

The update includes more changes, things like added customization options with more choice over colors and backgrounds on the Start Screen. There is also an improved search function that covers web content as well as apps, files, and settings on the PC. Another major addition is the new version of the firm's web browser, Internet Explorer 11, which Microsoft said would offer improved tools for developers.

Crysis 3: The Lost Island multiplayer DLC coming June 4
Crysis 3 is getting its first DLC pack in the form of The Lost Island, a new multiplayer DLC pack that brings four new maps, two new gameplay modes, and an unspecified number of new weapons. The DLC will be available for the PLayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on June 4 for just $14.99, or 1,200 Microsoft Points, if you use Xbox.

The gameplay in the Crysis series has always been deeply connected to the unique environments in which the action takes place. By transporting players out of the Liberty Dome and into the Lost Island setting, we're not only returning to Crysis' spiritual roots, but also introducing fresh ways to play that provide Crysis 3 fans with genuinely game-changing new tactical options, game modes and weapons.Details are still a bit slim, but we should find out more on June 4 when the DLC actually launches. It's worth noting that this multiplayer DLC actually has a story line to it. A mysterious alien presence has been detected on the island and you're there to destroy it. This story line likely ties in with the two new game modes.

HTC One Google Edition confirmed, seen on stage at D11 conference

Now time for my rant. While I absolutely love manufactures releasing their flagship smartphones in a stock Android flavor, I simply hate the fact that they lock them down to specific networks. If you are going to sell a phone running stock Android that features an unlocked bootloader, then for God's sake unlock the phone to all carriers as well. There are some of us who are committed to other networks (Sprint) who would love a stock Android HTC One or Galaxy S4.

LeakedTT: Unannounced Intel DC S3500 pops up on Newegg
A new unannounced Intel SSD has popped up online at Newegg. The DC S3700, reviewed here, has been a wildly successful SSD from Intel, and the new DC S3500 seems to be its apparent successor. The new DC3500 SSD has lower random write performance than the previous generation DC S3700 from Intel but a lower price as well.

Another notable aspect of the SSD is that it is coming in 1.8-inch form factor, though it would be logical that it will also have a 2.5-inch version. A big change is the switch to 20nm HET MLC NAND, which is an enterprise-class high-endurance NAND. The previous generation DC S3700 SSD has 25nm HET MLC NAND. This indicates that this is likely to be a value alternative to the DC S3700.

Pirate3D smashes through their funding goal on Kickstarter in under 10 minutes
I have been following Pirate3D for quite a while now and have watched their 3D printer, the Buccaneer, evolve into something refined and elegant. This is something most other 3D printers miss the mark on because they put a lot of time into function over form.

The Buccaneer uses 1.75mmm PLA filament which means there are dozens of colors available for about $40 per 1kg spool. "Current 3D printers have a very unfinished feel to them. By improving the aesthetics of a 3D printer as well as making the device more user friendly, we felt this could bridge the gap to mass adoption of 3D printing. Along with that, we want to also keep final price affordable so it would make economical sense to purchase a Buccaneer," the company said.

Liberty Reserve arrests "...are causing 'pain' to criminals"
The takedown of the Liberty Reserve digital cash exchange has caused "pain" to criminals who used the facility, according to a leading security expert. Brian Krebs said he had seen comments on crime-linked restricted access forums suggesting many had suffered "steep losses".

Police have raided businesses and homes linked to Liberty Reserve in Costa Rica. Four others have also been arrested and at least a further two men are being sought. In addition, computer servers used by the firm in Costa Rica and Switzerland are being examined. According to the indictment, Liberty Reserve was estimated to have had "more than one million users worldwide", a fifth of whom were in the US. However, since the site is accused of failing to verify its members' identities, it is unknown how many accounts were registered to identical individuals.

Short-term it will cause quite a bit of pain. If you're running a cybercrime operation and you lose half or three-quarters of your capital that can hurt and put a dent in your overall ability to perpetuate your business or whatever you are doing. The medium to long-term impact is going to hinge largely on what law enforcement is able to glean from the data it has taken from Liberty Reserve. It may lead them to be able to identify people who are ringleaders in cybercriminal activity. That said, it's very likely that information is heavily encrypted, and [based on the experience of other cases] the government is going to need the co-operation of the people they've arrested.

MyDigitalSSD BP4 240GB mSATA Review
Introduction

MyDigitalSSD set new battery life standards with the BP4 and at this time they are equal to the early SandForce B02 stepping products that we've tested in the lab. In a month we'll be at Computex Taipei 2013 and B02 should be all over the place in new products, but until then, MyDigitalSSD's BP4 is the battery life king... and they might even have the crown after Computex, too. The main difference for those buying today, the BP4 is available now and has been on sale at Amazon for over a month already.
MDSSD's BP4 uses the same controller found in the BP3, the Phison S8. As we've mentioned before, most SSD's are just simply FPGA chips and the programming / firmware is more important than the actual silicon, most of the time. Holding that statement true today, the Phison S8 in the BP4 is programmed for increased overprovisioning - that's why the marketing capacity is now 240GB. The data performance is also faster on the BP4. Random data is quicker due to new programming, and sequential performance is faster thanks to new Toshiba 19nm Toggle Type B flash.
The mSATA market is really starting to heat up and several notebooks / ultrabooks cut the red ribbon in around a month's time. In order to meet low pricing demands by customers, many of the OEMs have turned to older, slower designs that cost less than new exciting products. Soon to market low-cost ultrabooks with small cache SSD's paired with HDD's will require an upgrade to full flash based mSATA drives to make your ultrabook perform like your desktop with an SSD in it now. With the slots present, dropping in a large SSD is still the best bang for the buck upgrade most users can do, without diving under the notebook skin too deep.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE - Toshiba PX02SM Series 12Gb/s Enterprise SSD Review
Introduction

Last week Toshiba announced full availability of the PX02SMx eSSD (enterprise SSD's) for European markets. Understandably, this caught us by surprise as there are currently no 12Gb/s RAID adapters or HBA's on the market. Our early samples of the PX02SMx series have been languishing in the enterprise storage lab for nearly a month, while we awaited the key component for testing a 12Gb/s SSD: a 12Gb/s adapter. All 12Gb/s adapters from the normal vendors are under NDA or currently only sampling to OEMs. Luckily, we had already set plans in motion to gain access to the necessary equipment for testing.
The launch of 12Gb/s SAS brings a doubling of bandwidth that on the surface seems to be the most compelling feature. PCIe 3.0 and SAS 12Gb/s seem to be the perfect match, but in reality, the insatiable speed provided by 12Gb/s SAS already outstrips the available bandwidth of PCIe 3.0.
12Gb/s also brings other enhancements and changes to the SAS storage fabric that will allow for an expansion of the SAS ecosystem. SAS has long been an interface just begging to be let out of the box, and with the inclusion of new connectivity features, SAS is finally able to expand beyond its current limitations. We will cover some of these improvements on the following pages.
The major players with NAND foundries are all now rapidly expanding their presence in the enterprise realm with a variety of tiered solutions that appeal to different environments. The Toshiba PX02SMF080 series of eSSDs is the leading edge of a full frontal assault from Toshiba into the enterprise SSD battleground.
The PX02SM aims for Tier 0 applications with a dual-port 12Gb/s SAS interface and is Toshiba's first eSSD to feature 24nm eMLC (enterprise Multi Level Cell) NAND. The entry and mid-level PX02AM series also features 24nm eMLC NAND, but utilizes a SATA connection. The low-cost PX03AN series rounds out the offerings by leveraging standard 19nm MLC NAND and a SATA connection for entry-level and read-centric applications. All three SSD's support cryptographic-erase functionality in addition to AES 256-bit self-encryption.
The SED versions of the PX02SM series, the PX02SMQ/U, also offer Trusted Computing Group (TCG) enterprise protocol self-encryption. These features are important in today's computing environment where, according to Symantec, the average loss of an enterprise data breach is $5.5 million.
The PX02SM flagship product we are evaluating today features a Toshiba/Marvell controller in conjunction with 24nm eMLC and comes in capacities of 200GB, 400GB, 800GB and 1,600GB with a slim 7mm Z-height. The PX02SM series also features longevity that scales with capacity, with up to 29.2PB of write endurance for the 1,600GB model, which translates to roughly 10 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day). This endurance promise is backed by a five year warranty.
The PX02SM also utilizes Toshiba's proprietary Quadruple Swing-By Code (QSBC) to protect from read errors, an integral component of a layered ECC approach for improved error correction capabilities. The addition of power loss protection defends data from power loss events.
The Px02SMF080 is designed to support mission critical enterprise applications that demand performance, endurance and frugal power consumption. Toshiba has extensive history and experience with flash memory; they actually invented NAND flash over 25 years ago in 1987. Leveraging these decades of experience brings forth a serious contender to the enterprise SSD market.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card Review
Introduction

If the out of the box performance, though, wasn't enough, we then overclocked the model and found that with a core clock of over 1000MHz, the GTX 780 3GB did an excellent job closing the gap with the GTX TITAN, offering performance at times that was very similar to the $999 model.
Today sees the first phase of the new GTX 700 series completed with the release of the second model, the GTX 770 2GB. As the name would suggest, this model comes in below the GTX 780 3GB, much in the same way we saw a GTX 680 and GTX 670 in the last generation. General habit would tell that we'd see a GTX 760 and GTX 750 in time, but mid-range GTX 700 replacements aren't something we've heard of to date.
Let's dig in now and check out the new GTX 770 over the next pages!
