Android numbers are here again, collection method has changed It's that time of the month again, when we find out just how the Android OS is doing with its users. Google have changed up the way they collect these numbers, where they now only collect data from devices that have visited the Google Play store in the last month.
android_numbers_are_here_again_collection_method_has_changed
Previously, Google used to count all phones that checked into their servers. This change in collection methods hasn't changed the numbers that much, with Jelly Bean sitting pretty at 25% of the Android market share. Ice Cream Sandwich actually climbed a little, with 29.3% of devices running the deliciously-named OS.

The War Z forum and game database hacked, player data leaked - forces the game to go offline The War Z has had its fair share of troubles, but it has just gotten much more serious with its forum and game database being hacked. This has put users' data at risk.
the_war_z_forum_and_game_database_hacked_player_data_leaked_forces_the_game_to_go_offline
The user data include e-mail addresses, forum passwords, both of which OP Productions has said were encrypted. E-mail addresses to log into The War Z, game passwords, in-game character names and the IP addresses of gamers on both the forum and in the game were also leaked. OP Productions has said that they don't collect names and passwords of their customers, so unless it was posted on the forum itself, you should be okay. So if you're using the same (or similar) passwords as your The War Z account, or the forum, we would suggest you change all of your passwords just in case.

RumorTT: Windows Blue to be known as Windows 8.1 According to ZDNet's sources, Microsoft's upcoming Windows Blue will be known as Windows 8.1 to the public. As you can see in the screenshot below, the operating system is clearly labeled as "Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro." It looks like Windows Blue could be similar to the service packs of yesteryear.
rumortt_windows_blue_to_be_known_as_windows_8_1
The update appears to follow along the lines of Windows Phone 7 and 7.5. Windows RT is said to be known as "Windows RT 8.1." Microsoft envisions Windows 8 as a multiple selling season product meaning these refreshes every year or so, somewhat like how Apple updates Mac OS X in that they have 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 each with their own codename. It's not clear whether Microsoft intends to charge customers to update, though I would venture to guess they will charge a fee. If I had to guess a number, I'd guess $20.

Nokia Lumia 810 users on T-Mobile won't be getting LTE support I've got a spot of bad news for Nokia Lumia 810 users on T-Mobile. Even though the Lumia 810 hardware has support for LTE, it looks like users won't be getting access to T-Mobile's LTE network, despite earlier remarks that the device would be upgraded to LTE in the future through a software update.
nokia_lumia_810_users_on_t_mobile_won_t_be_getting_lte_support
T-Mobile said in a statement:
While the Nokia Lumia 810 features a chipset, which provides the hardware capability to support both HSPA+42 and LTE, the device will not automatically access our LTE network and, at this time, it will not receive an update to do so. T-Mobile is committed to enhancing customers' experience with our devices, including providing upgrades to device features and operating systems, and T-Mobile aims to deliver software upgrades when it will provide a better experience for our customers. We'll share additional information on upgrades for the Nokia Lumia 810 when they are available.
I'm pretty sure that LTE counts as a better experience. Who wouldn't want faster mobile Internet speeds? Another issue is some users may have purchased the Lumia 810 because T-Mobile had promised it would receive an update to enable LTE in the future. It's not clear what T-Mobile might do to compensate customers who purchased the device because of future LTE support.

Firefox 20 comes with per-window private browsing Mozilla has updated its Firefox web browser with per-window private browsing that functions much the same as Chrome's private browsing feature. In addition to per-window private browsing, Firefox 20 comes with stability improvements, bug fixes, HTML5 additions, and a new download experience.
As part of the stability improvements, users can now close a frozen plugin without the entire browser crashing. This is also similar to how Chrome handles plugins. The improved download experience features a new interface and a button that makes opening the downloads list much easier. When downloads are active, the button shows an estimated time to completion.
firefox_20_comes_with_per_window_private_browsing
Probably the largest change with Firefox 20 is the ability to have both normal Firefox windows and private browsing Firefox windows open simultaneously. As previously stated, this new method is how Chrome has handled private browsing from the get-go. Firefox used to require the entire session to either be a normal session or a private browsing session.

Disney Pixar's Finding Dory coming in 2015, is sequel to widely popular Finding Nemo When Finding Dory arrives in 2015, it will have taken Disney just 13 years to make the sequel to the widely popular Finding Nemo movie. Ellen DeGeneres confirmed that Finding Dory would be arriving at a theater near you on November 25, 2015 with DeGeneres remaining the voice of Dory.

"I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time," DeGeneres said in a statement Tuesday. Some might say that she just kept swimming for this day. References aside, she says that she isn't "mad it took this long." With her usual humor, she added, "I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16."
But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It's got a lot of heart, it's really funny, and the best part is - it's got a lot more Dory.
You can expect to see many of the favorites from Finding Nemo. Marlin, Nemo, and the Tank Gang, along with new characters, will be present and help with the telling of Dory's story. The movie will reunite Dory with her family and teach her a few things about the meaning of family.

T-Mobile to enable LTE, Visual Voicemail via software update for unlocked iPhones Users of unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile's network will soon be able to take advantage of LTE and Visual Voicemail. These features had been previously disabled because they did not come with network support. Now that T-Mobile is getting the iPhone, they are able to push out OTA updates to all iPhones running on the network.
t_mobile_to_enable_lte_visual_voicemail_via_software_update_for_unlocked_iphones
The T-Mobile Carrier Update is a minor iOS software update that enables official iPhone support by T-Mobile. When installed, the software update enables a handful of capabilities like Visual Voicemail, MMS Settings and Network/Device optimizations that customers do not have access to today. On April 5, the software update will begin being pushed via OTA to all iPhone devices on the T-Mobile network with iOS 6.1.x or higher.
The update comes one week before the iPhone is officially released to T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile has long allowed unlocked iPhones to be used with their network, though the users had to deal with slower networks due to network compatibility issues. If you're a current T-Mobile customer with an unlocked iPhone, let us know which feature you're most looking forward to.

LeakedTT: First images of Facebook's upcoming phone surface. @Evleaks, everyone's favorite source for pre-release mobile phone information has just released an image of what is said to be Facebook's upcoming smart phone.
leakedtt_first_images_of_facebook_s_upcoming_phone_surface
As you can see in the image above, the HTC manufactured "First" is a very generic looking smartphone that somewhat resembles an iPhone. The "HTC first" screen looks very much the result of some quick Photoshop work, but coming from @evleaks, we are inclined to trust them.

Lending further credence is that the phone closely matches the description given by 9to5Google last week. Either way, we will know something in a few days at Facebook's big Android focused event. Stay tuned to TweakTown for full coverage of the event!

ReportTT: Apple to produce iPhone 5S this quarter, aiming for summer launch The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is planning to ramp up production of the next iPhone--predicted to be the iPhone 5S--sometime this quarter. If the WSJ's sources prove accurate, this could mean Apple is aiming for a summer launch of the next iPhone. September is still within the summer time frame, so we could see the device being announced roughly one year after the iPhone 5 was first announced.

The sources say that Apple is still working with partners in Asia on a cheaper iPhone model. This model is expected to feature a 4-inch screen and a different body than the high-end model. It's possible the case could come in a variety of colors like the iPod touch.

Microsoft updates Outlook.com's calendar appearance Microsoft's Hotmail replacement, Outlook.com, is still pretty new but this hasn't stopped the Windows giant from releasing a new design for the calendar aspect of the website. Today, Microsoft has updated Outlook.com's calendar to feature a "fresh and intuitive design" that fits with the modern look Microsoft is providing all of its new products.

Yahoo teams up with Dropbox to allow larger file attachments in e-mail Yahoo has teamed up with cloud storage provider Dropbox to do away with the current 25MB e-mail attachment file-size limit. It's much the same technology as Gmail uses with Google Drive integration. Attachments are loaded into a user's Dropbox and can be easily stored, updated, and forwarded.
yahoo_teams_up_with_dropbox_to_allow_larger_file_attachments_in_e_mail
Some user e-mail accounts restrict file size or inbox size even further causing e-mails with large attachments to bounce. Dropbox says that this new integration will allow users to quickly save attachments directly to Dropbox where it will automatically sync to all of your devices:
Email attachments can be tricky: they've got file size limits, you can't keep them updated, and when you add people to a thread, attachments are the first to get left behind. The Yahoo! Mail team decided to fix this-by integrating with Dropbox! Starting later today, if you're using a Yahoo! Mail account in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish, you'll be able to access your Dropbox from right inside your inbox. You can add stuff from Dropbox to any email message and save attachments back to Dropbox, too. Since this integration is Dropbox-powered, you can even send that big album of vacation pics without worrying about the 25 MB file limit. Plus, it's easy to save any photo, video, or doc in your Yahoo! Mail straight to your Dropbox, where you can get to it from anywhere.
This is just one of many feature improvements that Yahoo has implemented since Marissa Mayer took over as CEO.

Google facing fines after failing to update privacy policy in the European Union Google is facing fines this morning after six European Union data protection regulators started enforcement measures over the company's failure to fix flaws in one of its new privacy policies.
google_facing_fines_after_failing_to_update_privacy_policy_in_the_european_union
France's National Commission for Computing and Civil Liberties started follow-up measures in line with French laws after a meeting with Google brought forth no changes. UK, German, Spanish and Dutch authorities are also considering enacting similar follow up procedures. The CNIL notified Google's Chief Executive Officer Larry Page in October, saying Google "empowers itself to collect vast amounts of personal data about Internet users without demonstrating that this collection was proportionate," and asked the company to align its policy with EU rules. The follow-up measures could result in heavy fines for Google, but if you look at the scale of things, CNIL's heaviest fine to date was 100,000 euros ($128,340) against Google and that is but a mere drop in the bucket for such a large company.

ADATA releases new solid state drives for the enterprise This morning ADATA announced its first offering to the enterprise market. The two new solid state drives are part of the SX1000L SSD line and are being offered in 100GB and 200GB capacities. [imgsbs]1[/imgsbs] [imgsbs]2[/imgsbs] The SX1000L line takes advantage of ADATA's expertise in NAND flash memory technology which lends an unprecedented level of performance and reliability to thew new modules. The line employs static wear-leveling technology that raises the mean time between failures to 1,500,000 hours. The SX1000L utilizes advanced controller technology to enhance read/write performance with sequential read speeds reaching 560MB/s and sequential write speeds approaching 340MB/s, with IOPS of 73,000 and 45,000 (maximum 4K random read and write, respectively). The use of multi-level cell NAND flash memory combined with advanced chip sorting lends to outstanding sustained performance lower latency and superior endurance. [imgsbs]3[/imgsbs] [imgsbs]4[/imgsbs] In a release ADATA said:
The long write endurance and the 5 year warranty of the SX1000L make it extremely suitable for read-centric servers such as web and VOD (Video on demand) servers. Notably, the ADATA SX1000L provides greater over-provisioning with higher efficient data compression than is often seen in general SSD controllers. Since in real-world applications most data is compressible, this means sustained performance, endurance and reliability all gain significant improvement.

Apple planning to expand Siri based on 12 new job postings A while back I reported on Apple posting a Siri based job that expressly required OSX development, which I thought might lead to integration of Siri into OSX. Over the weekend, Apple listed 12 new Siri based jobs that lend further credit to my prediction that Siri is coming to Mac devices.
apple_planning_to_expand_siri_based_on_twelve_new_job_postings
The list consist of mostly software engineers who will be charged with "helping invent new techniques for conversational interaction, and building practices, processes, and standards that will become a foundation for design and innovation far into the future." Other Siri job listings include Runtime Engineer, Hadoop Engineer, Monitoring Architect, Integration Engineer, Build / Release engineer and a pair of Data related Software Engineering positions. Of course Apple is keeping silent on if Siri will make an appearance on OSX. Another safe bet is that the company is working hard on integrating Siri with the less powerful hardware of the cheaper iPhone expected to release later this year.

Dell has said to his employees that the company will "significantly increase investment" in PCs and tablets once they go private. He hasn't exactly laid out the company plans on the table, but he has said that there will be a shift away from valuing gross margins, which is a great thing. This means that the company won't take in as much profits, but they'll want to drive sales of their products in other ways - experimentation, marketing, pushes into developing markets, and more.

Ask the Experts: I want to upgrade my system, and run all games at 1080p at a minimum of 45fps - what do you suggest? Our Ask the Experts section has a new question, where we have Duarte from Portugal wanting to know what he has to do to his system to run all games maxed out at 1080p at 45 frames per second.
TweakTown's Ask the Experts
Q: I would like to upgrade my system, I have an MSI N670 PE/OC and an Intel Core i7 2600k OC to 4.6ghz. I want to run all recent games at 1080p with all graphics settings set to maximum (for example Crysis 3). Also I don't want anything below 45 fps. Should i get another GTX 670? Or sell this one and buy lets say two AMD Radeon HD 7970s (more vram)? I would appreciate your opinion, thanks. A: You can view the answer to Duarte's question right here.

Activision has some impressive 3D face rendering technology Activision took some time during the Game Developers Conference last week in San Francisco to show off some of their impressive 3D face rendering technology. You can check out the video below.
Activision seem to have produced some very realistic faces, but those lips and mouth movements aren't perfect yet. Everything else looks damn impressive, even more so that it was all driven from a PC with a single GeForce GTX 680 GPU inside. Activision have said that the technology demo is running at 180fps on the GTX 680 - a somewhat useless number - because if this tech was built into a game with another 20 characters with this tech, and entire world at this level of graphics, those frame rates would plummet.

Intel Haswell Socket H Heatsink Requirements and Overclocking Thoughts

Introduction

intel_haswell_heatsink_requirements_and_overclocking_thoughts
The clock ticks (or is it a tock this round) and Intel's new 4th Generation Core processor, Haswell, gets closer. Mark your calendars for June 2nd, the rumored announce date, just days before Comptuex in Taipei. Behind the scenes early sample chips are starting to float around and full notebooks should quietly make their way to eager journalist's doors in May. At Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco we took a shallow dive into the future of desktop, mobile, server and more mobile things to come. Haswell is the next best thing for servers, desktops, notebooks, ultrabooks and even tablets / phones. One architecture to rule them all that scales up, down to the side and even to places where we never dreamed of before. Making the leap from mobile to server is Intel's interest in power management. Haswell brings voltage regulation to the actual chip and removes it from the motherboard or host device. Haswell has more control of power and more bands were added so the processor can slow or even sleep areas not in use. Other components like SSDs are gaining new sleep states as well, you'll hear about a feature called Dev Sleep before long in our SSD reviews and these features will all work together to further extend battery life and lower desktop power consumption. Haswell desktop processors have a new pin count, but a familiar shape. Today we're looking at the new socket and will speculate a bit about what overclocking may be like with the return of a base clock. ... Read the rest in your browser!

3DMark for Android: Tested on Several Popular Android Devices

Introduction

3dmark_for_android_tested_on_several_popular_android_devices
3DMark has been a staple of enthusiasts' rigs for years now, but for mobile reviewers, benchmarking software has been few and far between. Sure, we have some great benchmarks from Kishonti Informatics in the form of GLBenchmark, and Aurora Softworks' Quadrant. Futuremark are like the Jay Z of the benchmark scene, everyone knows who they are and they've finally stepped out, boots tightened and fists clenched, ready to beat the living crap out of your mobile device - in a good way. Futuremark are shifting in a new direction, where in the coming weeks they'll make Ice Storm Extreme (the 1080p portion of 3DMark) available to Windows. This means we'll have a truly cross-platform benchmark to run across our devices, and as mobile devices get closer to discrete GPU performance, we'll see that within the 3DMark benchmarks. 3DMark for Android is very polished, as I've been playing with it over the Easter weekend over multiple devices, so we'll jump right into the look of 3DMark for Android for now.

First Look

Before you even open 3DMark for Android up, you'll notice they've graced your eyes with a great looking icon - sure this isn't a make-it-or-break-it deal, but I'm a big fan of polished, sharp-looking icons. Jumping into 3DMark for Android, you're graced with a very slick, very 'now'-looking app. The first options you'll see are the two benchmarks themselves, 'Ice Storm' and 'Ice Storm Extreme'. These benchmarks are set at 720p and 1080p respectively, and will test out your mobile device in multiple factors. 3DMark is a cross-platform benchmark for all smart devices, tablets, notebooks and PCs running a multitude of OS' - Android, iOS, Windows and Windows RT. This gives Futuremark an incredibly sharp position to benchmark all users' devices, no matter the operating system they're using. ... Read the rest in your browser!

Enermax NAXN ADV 650-Watt 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Review

Introduction

enermax_naxn_adv_650_watt_80_plus_bronze_power_supply_review
Enermax has always produced solid results for us and we've always been eager to test out anything new they've had to offer. Up until now, we've focused on most of their higher end products such as the Revolution87+, Platimax, and MaxREVO power supplies. This is due the massive amounts of power that have been required by enthusiasts since about 2005. Around that time we saw a massive shift in the power required by both CPU's and GPU's, and multi-GPU configurations were just starting to make their second debut after being lost with the Voodoo 2. This increased power requirements even more. The last several years have brought those power requirements back down to a more respectable level and those should drop even more when Haswell comes along. My personal gaming rig currently consists of a Core-i7 3770K, Radeon 7970 and 16GB of RAM with a single SSD and a single platter drive for storage. Even under full load, I don't peak beyond 400W and I feel it is safe to bet that most single-GPU gamers don't either so long as the system was built in the last couple of years. These reduced power requirements give gamers and entry level enthusiasts the ability to consider lower wattage power supplies like the new Enermax unit we've got on the bench today. The new NAXN ADV 650W power supply should more than fulfill the requirements of anyone utilizing a single GPU and as long as you're not using high-end GPUs, it should be able to handle a pair of them, too. Let's move on to what it's made of on paper and take a deeper look in this unit from Enermax.

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

enermax_naxn_adv_650_watt_80_plus_bronze_power_supply_review
The new Enermax NAXN ADV 650W power supply features a single 12V rail. It is rated for 50A of 600W of power. Both the 3.3V and 5V rails are rated for 20A each with maximum combined output of 120W. The 5VSB rail is rated for 2.5A or 12.5W, which is a bit lower than we are used to seeing, but should still be okay. Maximum combined output for the power supply is 650W.
enermax_naxn_adv_650_watt_80_plus_bronze_power_supply_review
Moving on to the features list, we see that a few things are missing. This is to be expected with entry level units and what is lacking here is to be expected. The NAXN ADV 650W features SCP, OVP, OCP and OPP, but lacks OTP. The power supply features all native cables and none of them are sleeved. The upside to this is that ALL of the cables including the 20+4 pin Main are of the flat ribbon type and should be easily routed within the case. Enermax does not rate the NAXN ADV 650W for 100% continuous output at 50C, but does rate it at 40C instead. Again, this is to be expected with a more entry level unit. Finally, the power supple is rated for 80 PLUS Bronze efficiency. Enermax lists the NAXN ADV 650W with an MSRP $99.99. This definitely puts the price higher than a large majority of the competition, especially for 80 PLUS Bronze rated units. Enermax says that the unit is available now, but we couldn't track down a unit for sale. I would expect that once a few places get it in stock that the price would be a bit lower than that thus adding some value to the unit and making it a bit more competitively priced, but that is pure speculation at this point. As far as the warranty for the NAXN ADV 650W is concerned, Enermax backs the unit by a three year warranty. This is generally a sign that we are going to see capacitors on the inside that we don't like to see, but we won't know until we crack the unit open. ... Read the rest in your browser!

Taking advantage of its expertise in NAND flash memory technology, ADATA is emphasizing the reliability and performance of the SX1000L. It employs static wear-leveling technology to maximize device mean time between failures (MTBF) to 1,500,000 hours, providing the long-term dependability required by high density computing and heavy load server operations. Available in 2.5" standard SATA form factor, the SX1000L implements advanced controller technology to enhance read/write performance. Sequential read speeds reach 560 MB/sec, and sequential write is as high as 340 MB/sec, with IOPS of 73,000 and 45,000 (Maximum 4K random read and write, respectively).

The use of multi-level cell (MLC) NAND Flash memory combined with enhanced Flash chip sorting allows for outstanding sustained performance, lower latency, and superior endurance. Enhanced power-loss data protection, easy monitoring of the drive quality through SMART command, and flexible (user-defined) over-provisioning adjustment, all set the SX1000L apart from many similar models currently available. The SX1000L SSD will be available in capacities of 100GB and 200GB. For more information, visit the company's website at: http://www.adata-group.com
