techPowerUp! ASUS Readies GeForce GTX 660 Dragon Edition Graphics Card ASUS is ready with its third "Dragon Edition" graphics card, after launching ones based on GeForce GTX 660 Ti and Radeon HD 7850. The GTX 660 Dragon Edition (model: GTX660Ti-DP-2GD5) from ASUS is a premium custom-design implementation that's a couple of notches above its DirectCU II TOP (DCU2T). The card features a cooling solution largely identical to DirectCU II, with the exception of those blue stripes, and an aluminum back-plate to cool memory chips on the reverse side of the PCB. It also features ASUS' Direct Power vGPU passive signal-noise dampener that's found on the company's GTX 670 DirectCU Mini. The GTX 660 Dragon Edition features GPU clock speeds above those of the DirectCU II TOP, with GPU Boost speed of 1150 MHz (compared to the DCU2T's 1135 MHz). Strangely, despite better memory cooling, it features NVIDIA-reference memory clock speeds of 6.00 GHz, even as the DCU2T offers 6.10 GHz. Based on the 28 nm GK106 silicon, the GeForce GTX 660 feature 960 CUDA cores, and a 192-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 2 GB of memory. Based on what we learned about availability of the other Dragon Edition cards, it would be safe to conclude that this card will be sold only in the Greater China region (PRC, ROC, HK, MO). NVIDIA to Bundle Metro: Last Light with GeForce GTX 660 and Above Game bundle wars between NVIDIA and AMD have been a one-sided contest in favor of the latter, with AMD bundling the hottest AAA titles with its Radeon hardware, compared to NVIDIA offering in-game currency on popular free-to-play games. Following news of AMD stepping up its "Never Settle Reloaded" with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon on all GPUs upwards of Radeon HD 7750, we've learned that NVIDIA is frantically responding by preparing to give away Metro: Last Light with all GeForce GPUs upwards of the $200 GTX 660. The bundle will go live from April 16th. Read More ...
AMD "Never Settle Reloaded" Bundle Bolstered by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon AMD made an addition to its "Never Settle Reloaded" game bundle. Everyone who has already redeemed "Never Settle Reloaded" for their AMD Radeon products, will receive keys to activate Ubisoft's newest FPS title, FarCry 3: Blood Dragon, by e-mail. Those with unused coupons will automatically receive the game, when the coupons are redeemed. They keys will be given out by May 1st. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a standalone game, and an expansion pack in-principle to Far Cry 3. You don't need to own the original to play Blood Dragon. It gives you a single-player campaign that's completely set apart from the Far Cry universe, and features a retro-futuristic, exploitative B-movie setting, which is interesting and never tried out by a game studio in the last decade. A little earlier this month, AMD vice-president Roy Taylor announced that Battlefield 4 will be part of the company's next "Never Settle" bundle. Read More ...
PowerColor Rolls Out Radeon HD 7790 OC V2 Graphics Card PowerColor introduced its third graphics card based on AMD's latest Radeon HD 7790 mainstream GPU, the factory-overclocked HD 7790 OC V2 (model: AX7790 1GBD5-DHV2/OC). The card uses a single-fan cooler design that's unlike either of the two already launched models. Its cooler uses a compact aluminum fin stack, to which heat is fed by a single 8 mm-thick copper heat pipe; which is ventilated by a single 70 mm fan. PowerColor appears to have used an AMD-reference design PCB that's red-colored, on the new OC V2 variant. It features factory-overclocked speed of 1030 MHz core, which puts it between AMD reference speed of 1000 MHz, and the 1075 MHz of PowerColor's own TurboDuo implementation. The OC V2 could be PowerColor's attept to fix the rather bland looks of the similarly clocked AX7790 1GBD5-DHV2/OC. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability. Read More ...

Scythe Also Intros Grand Kama Cross 2 CPU Cooler In addition to the Mugen 2, Scythe announced second-generation Grand Kama Cross CPU cooler. Grand Kama Cross 2 (model: SCKC-3000) retains the unique top-flow design of its predecessor, which uses two large aluminum fin stacks arranged along inclines in opposite directions, which are ventilated by a fan from an angle, ensuring high turbulence, and with it, heat dissipation. With Grand Kama Cross 2, Scythe redesigned the fins to line up straight under the fan's air flow, so air is guided into the stack, and not repelled. The fins later cut an angle, increasing turbulence, improving heat dissipation. Heat from the CPU is drawn by a nickel-plated copper base, from which four copper heat pipes convey it to the two fin stacks. A 140 mm Scythe Falcon PWM fan handles air-flow. It spins at speeds ranging from 500 to 1,300 RPM, pushing 37.37 to an impressive 97.18 CFM of air. Like the Mugen 4, this cooler comes with HPMS, a new retention system that takes fewer steps to install, and supports the new LGA1150 CPU socket. Slated for April 24, it is priced at 4,980¥ (US $50). Scythe Rolls Out Mugen 4 CPU Cooler Scythe rolled out the fourth generation Mugen CPU cooler, in its home market of Japan. Mugen 4 (model: SCMG-4000), builds on the design of its predecessor with a feature it calls TMAPS (three-dimensional multiple airflow pass-through structure), a fin stack arrangement that works to improve air-flow and heat-dissipation to the flowing air. Another abbreviation Scythe is throwing at you is HPMS (hyper-precision mounting system), a new retention module that takes fewer steps to install, and supports all modern CPU socket types, including the upcoming Intel socket LGA1150, on which desktop Core "Haswell" processors will be based. Scythe Mugen 4 retains the unique jagged aluminum fins of its predecessor, it is an aluminum fin tower type CPU cooler, which uses six 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes to convey heat to the stack. Heat is drawn from a nickel-plated copper base. A Falcon 120 mm PWM fan guides air through the heatsink, which spins at speeds ranging from 400 to 1,400 RPM, pushing 20.7 to 79 CFM of air. Measuring 130 x 88 x 160 mm, the cooler weighs about 625 g. Slated for April 24, it is priced at 4,980¥ (US $50). Source: Hermitage Akihabara Read More ...
GIGABYTE Shows Off WindForce 450W VGA Cooling Solution For those not sold on the looks and cooling performance of NVIDIA's reference design for the GeForce GTX Titan, GIGABYTE could have an alternative. The company is working on a new high-performance air graphics card cooler, which it could deploy on upcoming high-end graphics cards. Named WindForce 450W, the cooler is designed to handle thermal loads as high as 450W. GIGABYTE strapped it on to the GeForce GTX TITAN and GTX 680, to show it off, at its "New Idea Tech Tour" event held in Berlin. WindForce 450W is a triple-slot graphics card cooler. It uses a pair of dense aluminum fin stacks to dissipate heat. Three thick (10 mm thick?) copper heat pipes convey heat to these stacks, which is drawn directly from the GPU die. The two stacks are ventilated by three 80 mm fans. When strapped to a GeForce GTX 680, GIGABYTE claims the cooler keeps its noise below 28.3 dB, with Furmark running. On the GTX Titan, it works to provide higher GPU Boost frequencies, or helps sustain set frequency offsets better. With NVIDIA clamping down restrictions on modifying reference design GeForce GTX TITAN (with exceptions for liquid-based custom cooling solutions), we won't see a card that combines the chip with WindForce 450W any time soon.
